Catching Up With Dale Evans
By Rick Mendosa
You'd have a hard time imagining a life fuller than the one Dale Evans has packed into 87 years. She's been an actress, a singer, an entertainer, and a best-selling author. She was married four times; her marriage to the "king of the cowboys," Roy Rogers, lasted almost 51 years, until his death of congestive heart failure in 1998 at the age of 86. Since 1942 she has starred in 41 films amd four television series, most of them with Roy and his horse, Trigger, and her horse, Buttermilk. She wrote their theme song "Happy Trails." For the past 17 years the Trinity Broadcasting Network has shown her one-half hour talk show, "A Date with Dale," which she still tapes every week. And, so far, she has written 26 books. Together Dale and Roy parented a family of nine children, including one from her first marriage, two from his previous marriage, and one together. Their children also included four by adoption and one by foster parenthood. The multi-ethnic family included Choctaw, Scottish, and Korean girls. But along with Dale's triumphs came more than her share of tragedies. One of the adopted children, Sandy, had been a battered child. Dale and Roy's only child, Robin, was a Down's syndrome baby. Their adopted Korean daughter, Debbie, was killed in a bus accident. Sandy and Robin also died before reaching adulthood.

LA Times Obituary

"The Queen of the West", Dale Evans passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at her Apple Valley home in California. Congestive heart failure was the cause of death. Within the past ten years, she suffered both a heart attack and stroke. Married to "The King of Cowboys," Roy Rogers, the two had quite a career together. Dale Evans was born with the name Frances Octavia Smith in Uvalde, Texas on October 31, 1912. She was married four times and her first marriage took place when she was a mere 14 years old. By 15 years old, she had a baby. Not long after, her husband left her and she was a single mother at 17 years old. Her last marriage, to Roy Rogers, took place in 1947 and she remained married to Roy Rogers until his death in 1998 when he died of congestive heart failure.

Early RR Dealer Sheet:

This is probably the first photograph used to advertise Roy Rogers. It is not dated, but I am fairly sure it would have been produced just before the NY TOY FAIR in 1955 as indicated in the lower right corner. This piece is identical to the pieces shown in the historical photo in a hotel room, probably room 1430 of the Hotel New Yorker in 1955. Since 1939, the TOY FAIRS are held in February in NY. By the time the sets were finally produced, the silver martingale was changed to blue and the silver trim around the saddle was eleminated. This saddle can be seen in the photo from the Roy Rogers Museum in California. Those production pieces were available in the fall of 1955 in the Wards and Sears Christmas books.
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans at the Roy Rogers Museum
This photo was taken by Sande Schneider at the Roy Rogers Museum in California. It is more or less a missing link connecting the early prototypes to the photos in the historical TOY FAIR photos mentioned above. The Dale sets in the historical photo show a darker shirt for Dale (probably red), though Trigger had the silver martingale as shown in the Dealer Sheet above. The silver trim on the saddle in that sheet shows up again here. Dale Evans is a stock early Champ Cowgirl except for the green pants.

Cowboy Queen Dale Evans Dies
by Marcus Errico

Feb 7, 2001, 4:45 PM PT
The Queen of the Cowgirls has ridden off into the sunset. Dale Evans , wife and steady companion to Roy Rogers , died Wednesday. She was 88. Evans, who together with her singing-cowboy king hubby starred in 35 movies and cowrote more than 400 jangly tunes, including their immortal theme song, "Happy Trails to You," died of congestive heart failure in her home in Apple Valley, California. a d v e r t i s e m e n t
A family spokesperson said Evans died surrounded by her son and other family members. Evans had battled heart problems for years; in 1999, she was hospitalized after having a mild heart attack. She also suffered a heart attack in 1992, and had been weakened by a stroke in 1996. Her husband died in 1998 from congestive heart failure at the age of 86. Born Frances Octavia Smith in Uvalde, Texas, she got her show-biz start as a radio singer. Eventually she found her way to Hollywood in the early '40s, appearing in a string of mostly forgettable flicks before hooking up with Rogers, who was already one of the day's top stars. Evans and Rogers met on the set of the 1944 B Western Cowboy and the Senorita and married three years later. Togetherhe astride his trusty mount Trigger, she on Buttermilkthey ruled the genre, appearing in dozens of sugarcoated horse operas, including

PROFILE ON
ROY ROGERS AND DALE EVANS
ROY ROGERS

The things that made Roy Rogers a pop culture icon in the 1950's died long before he did. Our heroes are no longer cowboys. And no one makes a pitch for clean living anymore. And a yodeling straight-shooter dressed in frills and rhinestones (a trademark from his rodeo days) would be hopelessly out of place in these cynical times.
But for many baby boomers, Roy Rogers was their first real TV hero. His passing reminds us of how much we've aged and how much innocence we've lost.
On playgrounds today, kids threaten to "Springerize" their foes because they've seen one too many Jerry Springer show. Teachers have to ban language inspired by the animated "South Park." And good guys don't wear white hats anymore.
Although Rogers was a B-movie Western film star in the 1940's, his popularity soared when his films were recycled on TV in the early 1950's. The medium was in it's infancy in 1951 when his half-hour series, "The Roy Rogers Show," made him a TV star. The series ran seven years in NBC at 6:30 P.M. Sundays and reruns aired another three years on CBS on Saturday mornings.
Rogers already had been crowned "King of the Cowboys" before he came to TV. In 1948, an estimated 80 million went to see his films. His TV show was set on the Double R Bar Ranch where Roy continued his simple fight for law and order in the contemporary West. Also featured were: Dale Evans; Roy's bumbling sidekick, Pat Brady; Roy's horse, Trigger; Roy's dog, Bullet; Pat's cantankerous jeep, Nellybelle; and Dale's horse, Buttermilk.

75. Roy Rogers & Dale Evans - Happy Trails
Roy Rogers dale evans Happy Trails. . FROM THE FOREWORD As I gained a touch of worldliness, I even came to see what Roy saw in dale evans.
http://www.mjq.net/truecrime/carltonstowers/happytrails.htm
Happy Trails FROM THE FOREWORD: To those of us eleven-going-on-twelve, it was a simpler time. Life's great challenges revolved around how to pass to the sixth grade, avoid girls, and scrape up the necessary nine cents cash each week for the Saturday afternoon matinee down at the Bijou. There in the cool, popcorn-scented darkness of our rural West Texas theater, we could escape for a few hours from the voice of clinging little sisters and bullying big brothers and joyfully ride alongside Roy Rogers as he went about his weekly business of stomping the living what-for out of evil, righting wrongs, and singing his way into the heart of his ladyfriend Dale Evans who, for a girl, wasn't too bad inasmuch as she seemed to think as highly of Roy as we did. Indeed, if my childhood ever acquainted me with a true-life Ward of Heaven, Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys, was that person. Needless to say, I was hardly alone in my unabashed hero worship. In the years between 1943 and 1954 Roy Rogers was annually voted Hollywood's number one money-making Western star. Over four hundred merchandising products bearing his endorsement filled the pages of Mother's Sears and Roebuck catalog (hats, chaps, boots, toy six-guns, thirty-two different designs of belt buckles and the first of the children's school lunch boxes). His fan mail, ofttimes addressed simply to "Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys," found its way to Republic Studios without the slightest delay. We Buckaroos, as he was fond of calling us, joined Roy Rogers Fan Clubs, bought twenty-eight million Roy Rogers comic books a year, and prompted publishers to produce no fewer than nineteen hardback books based on his fictional heroics. We listened to him sing and yodel on old RCA Victor 78s and devotedly read a syndicated newspaper comic strip which reached sixty-three million readers weekly. His weekly statement for his radio sponsor, "I was raised on Quaker Oats," made us want to eat Quaker Oats ourselves. And we stood ever ready to argue with the greatest conviction that our hero could ride, shoot, fight, and sing better than all the other box office cowboys you could crowd onto a movie screen.

A Marlin 1894 Cowboy Rifle Decorated with Artwork in 24-karat Gold and Nickel Honoring the First Family of the West
The left side of the receiver features a portrait of Roy "Dusty" Rogers, Jr., along with a portrait of Roy and Dale, cheek to cheek with their smiles that warmed so many of our hearts. A banner with the legend "Roy, Dale and Dusty Rogers" is featured in the center.
Right side of the receiver features Roy's wonder horse Trigger, with Roy in the saddle, rearing up in the pose which is so familiar to all of us. To the left, Roy and Dale ride on Trigger, the loved and admired golden palomino who co-starred with Roy in 180 adventures. The artwork on both sides of the receiver is complemented by gently flowing scrollwork of gleaming nickel. The rifle's lever is polished and decorated in 24-karat gold, as are the fore-end cap and magazine cap. Each Tribute's edition number from 001 to 300 is featured in 24-karat gold and nickel on the rifle's tang. Additionally, the unique octagonal barrel is finished in polished blued steel.
In April of 1938, at the Capitol Theater in Dallas, Texas, America's newest western star made his debut. In his first movie, "Under Western Skies," Roy played the role of a Wyoming cowboy with a wonder horse named Trigger who traveled to Washington, appealing to Congress to help starving farmers and ranchers in the Depression years.

On the right side of the frame, Dale is shown on her famous buckskin quarterhorse, Buttermilk. To her right, a length of braided rope frames the legend, "Dale Evans, Queen of the West." Trigger gets his own portrait on the backstrap, where a braided rope encircles the legend, "Happy Trails," Roy and Dale's signature phrase.
The cylinder is also embellished with six designs, one for each chamber of the gun. A musical note symbolizes Roy & Dale's music, and Buttermilk and Bullet the Wonder Dog get a portrait each. One chamber shows Roy's holster, complete with a Colt .45, another shows a pair of Roy's fanciest boots. BAR-D Poets share their tributes to Dale Evans: Janice Mitich
Queen of the West
Queen of the West Doris Daley Thank Heavens for Dale Evans Larry Maurice She Was Always the Music Rusty Calhoun Childhood's End "California Steve" Dirksen Short a Few Rolf D. Ritschel Last of the Western Heroes In early 2003, Dale's grandson-in-law Todd Halberg wrote to us: I've been married to Dale's granddaughter for 28 years, knew Roy and Dale well, wrote the eulogy on his funeral program, and never knew two stronger or more real people. I'll always love and miss them, and I'll always appreciate true and simple tributes like the ones here. With Todd Halberg's kind permission, following is the eulogy he wrote for Roy Rogers: While others left their mark here by doing it "their way," Roy Rogers left his mark in us with each act of selflessness, care, and conviction. Who of his profession comforted more lonely orphans, brought joy to more hurting children's hospital rooms, or rode a straighter trail as a generation's role model? Who stood as bravely or paid more dearly for the right to publicly and unashamedly honor God in the course of all his programs?
