    Roger Eno Voices
EEGCD 42 :: EG Records Ltd. :: (c) 1985 I met a man (whose name I don't remember) while looking for new music at Amoeba . We had a lot of similar tastes, he and I, and before we parted he told me that there was one more album from the foundational Eno Budd period that I didn't know about. And right he was... this is indeed another classic from the great Opal catalogue of yesteryear. mr. Eno (specifically, Roger) takes those two essential elements synthesizer and piano and creates himself a multitude of mystical landscapes. Cool soothing pacing, notes poised between now and forever, aching, and slowly disappearing into the twilight. Mellow, beautiful, grand and dignified. And perhaps a bit more intense than its sibling albums the chords are struck a little harder. No matter. Just listen to it when falling asleep, rather than when you're already there. It'll take your hand and walk with you down into your own personal Neverland. Most of the works from this catalogue are widely available, and I would doubt that this one is any exception. Roger Eno
A version of this classic tune takes on a central role in Roger's new album Swimming, a shimmering collection of ten vocal and four instrumental musical time-pieces which flow one into the next to produce the composer's strongest recording to date. "Over The Hills is a traditional tune written by John Gay" says Eno. "It was included in the 18th century parody The Beggar's Opera and was recited before a hanging". In fact Swimming contains two other hanging tunes, both traditional, in The Paddington Frisk and The Parting Glass, an Irish favorite. Whereas an English folk luminary such as Bert Jansch might see the serious near-death side of English folk music, Roger Eno sees it in a humorous light. After all, didn't the aforementioned Led Zeppelin immortalize hanging tunes on their folksy self-titled third album? That's the thing about Roger Eno. He combines a musicologist's brain with a wry sense of humor, a frequently overlooked characteristic that has sustained his work since he started making records in 1983. His first solo outing Voices in 1985 was unashamedly impressionistic; Satie and Debussy inspired pieces played on grand piano and Wurlitzer keyboard fed through a harmonizing rack module to give them a glow. Between Tides from 1988 featured a chamber orchestra with Roger also showcasing his love of the accordion and Spaghetti Western themes. 1993 saw Eno teaming up with ex-Dream Academy vocalist Kate St. John, his partner in the Channel Light Vessel collective. Their album The Familiar (Gyroscope GYR 6601 - CD and Cassette) found her singing five very English rural rhymes to Roger's Vaughan Williams and Delius inspired music.

It's kind of spacey but the groove isn't too thick. Relaxation set in motion. At times it gets fairly innocuous, rarely generic as if some trance tracks were completely pasteurized and homogenized. Some very energizing soundscapes here, we're not just afloat in a sea of digital backwash. It's gentle but surreal, softly disquieting and fairly somber so bring the night vision goggles. The synths, rhythm loops, and treated pianos are familiar, but with new blends. Oops, occasionally we revert to the highly treated, meandering piano backed with electronic gushes, drips and whooshes. But the "Blue Kind Of Drug" picks itself up eventually, shakes it's chakras and walks off. Around the midpoint, we're offered minimalist digiscapes; the tinkle and boom, the grooves getting farther and fewer between. Suddenly "Hip Hop Flipperty Flop" lightly injects some more beats to get us over that crest of ease.

    http://www.starsend.org/rogereno.html
Profile: Roger Eno Roger Eno is known primarily as an "ambient" composer through his collaborations with brother Brian Eno and producers Michael Brook and Daniel Lanois, but his depth as a musician defies categorization. A multi - instrumentalist, Eno has composed many memorable scores for film and TV including "Dune", "Nine And A Half Weeks" and "Warm Summer Rain". His love of classical piano is evident in his many critically acclaimed solo works which feature his unique ambient chamber music style. His piano also figured prominently in the group Channel Light Vessel, an ambient super-group featuring Kate St. John, Bill Nelson and Laraaji. In addition to those projects, Roger Eno has worked with an illustrious assortment of musicians including Michael Brook and John Cale. 1999 found Eno in yet another collaboration, this time with The Drum Club's groove master Lol Hammond. Their recent CD Damage (1999 Thirsty Ear) combines Eno's beautiful piano and sonic atmospheres with Hammond's modern techno rhythms. The combination is an irresistible mixture of texture, melody and mellow beats. Their appearance at the Gathering in Philadelphia was part of that summer's brief tour of select North American cities. Among his many performance credits, Roger Eno along with Lol Hammond, played live in Philadelphia at the Gathering of 26 August 1999. For reviews and photos, please access:

3916 Locust Walk in Philadelphia, PA Review Roger Eno/Lol Hammond and Hans-Joachim Roedelius Just returned from this evening's Gathering with Roedelius and Roger Eno. Remind me, next time, to bring a boat. My car had to swim half way home. There really does seem to be a trend developing with space musicians. Back in March, during Jeff Pearce's performance of "Rain as a Metaphor", a massive cumulous disturbance occurred. Rain was actually dripping Chinese torturelike from St. Mary's rafters. Well, tonight's Roger Eno performance of "The Boatman" from his recent CD "Swimming" (I lie not) produced a cloudburst that had Jeff's seeming like a soft drizzle in comparison. Looking forward already to the next announced Gathering , which includes a repeat performance by Roedelius (as tonight's certainly left me longing for more) and Tim Story. It's slated for early October. Bring an umbrella. By - As Posted to The Spacemusic List: Fri, 27 August 1999

    Comments:
Roger Eno was first introduced to the music-buying public in 1983, when he collaborated with Daniel Lanois and his older, more famous brother Brian Eno on the Apollo album. On this album, he proved himself capable of creating sonic textures which were not terribly different from those explored by his elder sibling. There was little to suggest that he was capable of of making a distinctive impact upon the music world. Although I have not heard all of his albums, my perception is that, after 15 years, Roger Eno has still not managed to truly distinguish himself with his musical releases. Between Tides , his first solo album, emerged in 1988; since then, he has worked in a number of minimalist projects, but has never, to my knowledge, really broken through with a truly distinctive work.

Thirsty Ear Roger Eno and Lol Hammond have somehow managed to put their wildly differing musical stylings into one space to create an intriguing collection of works called Damage which, in it's own special way, just might inspire others to look a little closer at the raw power a piano accompanied by just the right accompaniments is capable of producing. Often content to simply breeze along with the flow, hardly ever piling up the pieces to the usual grand climax before the long slide into silence, Eno and Hammond have taken the time to hold back on the heart stopping grooves and instead look into the spaces that often get ignored. Until Lose That Skin came along I wasn't actually sure whether this album was for me. I just didn't get the simplicity. But after several moments with an oddly de-tuned piano and what I suspect to be the ex-Drum Club member Hammond's inspired subsonics, I was at once clued in and ready for a lot more. Blue Kind Of Drug, which followed, stayed in the same lane while slowly lifting me back up into that already familiar and super hypnotic drum loop that just grinds away forever. From there on in things just got better and better.

Roger Eno and Harold Budd are two of the most interesting composers of the ambient scene. After a long silence (perhaps a technique borrowed from one of their soundscapes), they've just re-emerged with new recordings. It's been five years since Harold Budd put out a solo album, but he's been busy collaborating with the likes of Andy Partridge from XTC and composer Hector Zazou. His latest solo work, Luxa (Gyroscope), harks back to his earlier, often ghostly electronic music the engrossing Lovely Thunder (1986), or The White Arcades (1988, both on Brian Eno's Opal label) as well as his keyboard collaborations with Brian Eno, Ambient 2: Plateaux of Mirror (1980) and The Pearl (1984, both on EG). Brian's brother Roger, who has often worked in the shadow of his brother, has now released Swimming (Gyroscope), a mix of ambient synthesizer and traditional folk musics. Although Budd has often been proclaimed a minimalist, his compositions have always played with that notion, setting up repetitive patterns and then surreptitiously breaking them. Many of the composer's electronic and electro-acoustic works use a base of two-to-three notes or chord patterns that bounce back and forth while another theme plays out within or around them, ambient tones hovering beneath. On Luxa , the cyclical "Chet" floats along, with intermittent chimes and a punctuating bass tone recurring at different intervals, keeping the piece fresh and engaging. The engrossing "Mandan" features eerie electronic tones, odd shaker sounds, and two themes that both alternate and overlap. The mysterious, dreamy "Agnes Martin" swims more ethereal waters simple, melodic passages haunting a dense keyboard fog.
