50. Eno On Miles Davis
brian eno's musings on Miles Davis and the relationship between the music and the context (taken from The Wire Dec./Jan. 1993).
http://www.hyperreal.org/music/artists/brian_eno/interviews/Miles.html
Eno on Miles Davis
This appeared in the most recent issue of The Wire, in the midst of a number of "untold stories" about Miles Davis. This is Eno in his Richard Rorty mode [cf. Rorty's "Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity"], being more radically post-structural than usual (normally, he limits himself to attacking the notion of "final vocabularies" rather than mounting radical assaults on the notion of subjects or authors). I thought you all might enjoy it. My answer to much of this, of course, is that I had *no* idea of who Miles Davis *was* when I first heard him, and had again the same experience when I heard his much earlier work [I worked backward from "Bitches Brew". A friend bought it on the first day that it came out, brought it home, and then threw it in the trash and stalked out of the house we were then living in, allowing me to fetch it from the trash and be impressed that he finally bought an album I liked (*serious Horace Silver/Chet Baker guy....). He *was* an overweight heating engineer from Oslo, for all intents and purposes. And when I got round to finally hearing the "early" Miles, I had no idea it was the same guy. Ah, the pleasures of ahistoricity.... :)
thinking about miles davis in an un-miles davis like way
Miles was an intelligent man, by all accounts, and must have become increasingly aware of the power of his personal charisma, especially in the later years as he watched his reputation grow over his declining trumpeting skills. Perhaps he said to himself: 'These people are hearing a lot more context than music, so perhaps I accept that I am now primarily a context maker. My art is not just what comes out of the end of my trumpet or appears on a record, but a larger experience which is intimately connected to who I appear to be, to my life and charisma, to the Miles Davis story." In that scenario, the 'music', the sonic bit, could end up being quite a small part of the whole experience. Developing the context- the package, the delivery system, the buzz, the spin, the story - might itself become the art. Like perfume...

55. The High Llamas - Cold & Bouncy
Reviewer states It's an album that connects the unseen dots between the blithe, syrupy sounds of Bert Kaempfert to the innovation of brian eno, dabbing its own marks along the way.
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/5320/bouncy.htm
The High Llamas
Cold And Bouncy
Sean O'Hagan, the composer and arranger behind The High Llamas, achieves the highest goal a musician can aim for. The imagery in his music is so radiant and elaborate that he creates a mysterious place that allows listeners to get blissfully lost in it. Having started his musical life with the Irish band Microdisney, O'Hagan formed The High Llamas in the early 90's and released a couple of obscure records. It was 1994's Gideon Gaye that raised eyebrows for reviving the ghost of Brian Wilson's unfinished Smile LP of 1966 (the one that garnered him the title of "genius" even though he never released it), incorporating that Beach Boy's glorious and ignored ideas. Strings, horns, banjos, harpsichords, and out-dated electronic gadgets combined in ambient styles, creating strange new musical worlds. O'Hagan didn't just find influence in Wilson's late-60's sound, he appropriated it. Having taken ownership of the style, he was free to take it where Wilson and The Beach Boys never had the courage to. After 1996's Hawaii and now Cold And Bouncy , I believe that Brian Wilson was just a very good songwriter and talented arranger. Sean O'Hagan

It's kind of spacey but the groove isn't too thick. Relaxation set in motion. At times it gets fairly innocuous, rarely generic as if some trance tracks were completely pasteurized and homogenized. Some very energizing soundscapes here, we're not just afloat in a sea of digital backwash. It's gentle but surreal, softly disquieting and fairly somber so bring the night vision goggles. The synths, rhythm loops, and treated pianos are familiar, but with new blends. Oops, occasionally we revert to the highly treated, meandering piano backed with electronic gushes, drips and whooshes. But the "Blue Kind Of Drug" picks itself up eventually, shakes it's chakras and walks off. Around the midpoint, we're offered minimalist digiscapes; the tinkle and boom, the grooves getting farther and fewer between. Suddenly "Hip Hop Flipperty Flop" lightly injects some more beats to get us over that crest of ease.

Born - May 1948, Suffolk, England. Brian Eno was a founder member of Roxy Music, manipulating sounds on their debut album and the legendary For Your Pleasure. Leaving Roxy Music in 1973, he began his solo career with the album Here Come The Warm Jets. Eno has released a string of critically acclaimed records, and over the years his work has been compiled on two Best Ofs and three Boxed Sets. As well as Eno's own albums, he has collaborated with the likes of John Cale, Nico, Robert Fripp and the band James. His co-writing and playing on David Bowie's Low, Heroes and Lodger helped define the sound of this classic trilogy. After having produced U2's The Joshua Tree, Unforgettable Fire, Zooropa and Achtung Baby, he formed a loose collective with members of the band and other artists (including Luciano Pavarotti and Howie B.) to write and record Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1" released on Island Records (Oct 95). Brian Eno is also one of the most significant record producers of our age. His ability to steer artists into radical new areas was first made obvious on the three albums he made with Talking Heads, culminating in Remain in Light in 1980. By this time he had also produced the seminal compilation of New York's New Wave, No New York, and Devo's Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo. In the 1980s he applied his gear-changing skills to U2, helping an already great stadium rock band turn into the most original and creatively-challenging mega-band since the Beatles.
