The completion of Egypt's first nuclear reactor must have inspired the Yeghoyan's to identify this bundle of energy in its purest form. Their move to Victoria B.C. three years later found them changing their name to Egoyan for simplicity's sake. Growing up in BC, Atom had a relatively average childhood. His quest for assimilation lead to the young Egoyan rejecting his family's culture. However, years later when he attended the University of Toronto he began to reconnect with his Armenian past. While studying International Relations with every intention of becoming a foreign diplomat, Atom completed his first short film production. Howard in Particular was made possible with some help from the Hart House Film Board, a student association within U of T. This freshman attempt picked up a prize at the Canadian National Exhibition Film Festival. With this early success, Adam began his next project: writing and directing a half hour short entitled

Leggendo il libro, in ogni modo, mi avevano colpito la genialità della scrittura, la profondità dei personaggi e la quantità di problematiche che solleva. Nel momento in cui ho voltato l'ultima pagina del libro sapevo che dovevo realizzare questo film. William Trevor è uno dei maggiori scrittori contemporanei. È in grado di ritrarre in modo straordinariamente vivido i suoi personaggi, dandogli ricchezza di particolari e un senso di compassione che testimoniano che le loro vite sono piene di bisogni e di speranze. Nel caso di Felicia's Journey Ho anche visto nell'opera di Trevor una affascinante distorsione della storia della Bella e la Bestia. Qui Felicia è la ragazza giovane e ingenua, mentre Hilditch è un "mostro" dal punto di vista intellettuale ed emotivo, piuttosto che fisico. Come tutti i grandi miti e le grandi fiabe, entrambi i personaggi devono affrontare i loro demoni e crescere per raggiungere i loro obiettivi o, per dirla in modo più pertinente, la loro pace. È una coincidenza abbastanza strana che nella mia infanzia io abbia avuto un rapporto molto particolare con la cultura inglese. Da bambino, sono emigrato con la mia famiglia a Victoria, nella Columbia Britannica, sulla costa occidentale del Canada. All'epoca, era la metà degli anni '60, Victoria era un caso virtuale di distorsione temporale: gran parte della città restava attaccata ad una reale o immaginaria eredità britannica e la gente si vedeva come l'ultimo bastione dell'Impero Britannico. Mi sono ritrovato circondato da gente che masticava un accento inglese - ma molti di loro non erano mai realmente stati in Inghilterra. His work often explores themes of alienation and isolation, featuring characters whose interactions are mediated through technology, bureaucracy or other power structures. Egoyan was born to Joseph and Shushan Yeghoyan in Cairo, Egypt and was raised in Victoria, British Columbia , Canada. As a teenager, he became interested in reading and writing plays. Significant influences included Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter . He graduated from the University of Toronto . Egoyan is now based in Toronto , where he lives with his wife, Arsinée Khanjian , an actress who appears in many of Egoyan's films, and their son, Arshile. Egoyan has directed a dozen full-length films, several television episodes, and a few shorter pieces. The parents, Armenian refugees living in Egypt, ran a furniture business in Cairo. Both had artistic aspirations, as they had studied painting earlier in life, Joseph as a teenager at the Art Institute of Chicago . They took a unique and symbolic approach in naming their son. In recognition of a newly completed nuclear reactor, the first in Egypt, Joseph and Shushan decided to call their son Atom. D etermined to leave political unrest behind them for good, the family, which now included a daughter, moved to Canada in 1963. Instead of choosing to live in a city such as Montreal, which featured a significant Armenian community, the Yeghoyans opted to settle in Victoria , British Columbia. They changed their last name to the simpler Egoyan, and opened another furniture store. They set about to make a new life for themselves in a new country. L ife in Victoria didn't provide for any external reinforcement of Armenian culture, and Atom Egoyan set out at an early age to reject his own ethnicity. He adopted the isolation that his surroundings symbolized, adamantly refusing to either speak or listen to his parents native language. Search the Stranger Box Fetishization in "Exotica" Atom Egoyan’s film “Exotica” contains strong suggestions of hard-core pornography, is intended to be erotic, and if examined only superficially, might be interpreted as proscribed sexual entertainment. The Festival of Light’s definition of pornography as described by John Ellis in his essay “On Pornography” would likely condemn “Exotica” as needlessly and dangerously provocative. However, the basic themes of humanity that Egoyan targets in his film are psychological in nature, expressed in terms of eroticism but not provocative in themselves. Interwoven in Egoyan’s complex, dark narrative are many erotic images and forbidden sexual innuendoes which are inevitably exciting to his viewers, but the sexual excitement serves another purpose: to draw the viewer into emotional and intellectual realms as he is confronted with increasingly potent evidence of tragedy and regret. Controversial sexuality is not what is ultimately revealed; rather, it is a tool for other revelations, and therefore “Exotica” functions as the kind of film that Ellis advocates as an intentionally voyeuristic and possibly revolutionary displacement of mindless fetishism. The first theme I will address is what Ellis calls “the question of female pleasure.” Ellis describes the common “fetishistic regime” found in hard-core pornography: it is the process of the typically represented heterosexual male becoming intrigued and threatened by female sexuality and his ensuing need to control this mysterious entity with the power of the phallus. This regime is proscribed for the pleasure and satisfaction of heterosexual male viewer in the repeated, ritualized form of subduing female pleasure with the mighty phallus. This regime is not presented anywhere in “Exotica,” in which- with the exception of the kiss between two female characters- all sexual pleasure experienced by the characters is through voyeurism or exhibitionism.
