Before Jimmy Durante became one of the most famous and lovable entertainers of the Twentieth Century, he was a hot piano player and bandleader. Durante was greatly influenced by Scott Joplin and had his first success in show business as a Ragtime piano player starting around 1911. He was billed as "Ragtime Jimmy" and played in New York City and Coney Island. Durante was part of the same wild crowd of early White jazz musicians as the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and Johnny Stein. When the New Orleans Jazz style swept New York by storm in 1917 with the arrival of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band Durante was part of the audience at Reisenweber's on Columbus Circle. Durante was very impressed with the band and invited them to play at a club called the Alamo in Harlem where Jimmy played piano. The band was soon the hottest thing in show business and Durante had his friend Johnny Stein assemble a group of like-minded New Orleans musicians to accompany his act at the Alamo. They billed themselves as "Durante's Jazz and Novelty Band". In late 1918 they recorded two sides for Okeh under the name of the New Orleans Jazz Band , they re-did the same two numbers a couple of months later for Gennett under the name of Original New Orleans Jazz Band , and in 1920 the same group recorded again for Gennett as Jimmy Durante's Jazz Band . In 1921, Durante collaborated with an African-American songwriter by the name of Chris Smith on the song "

Most people thought the mysterious Mrs. Calabash must have been some fictional character that Durante dreamed up just to tease his audiences. But longtime residents of Calabash, North Carolina believe otherwise. The folks in this town will tell you she was a real person with a real nameand a fascinating story to boot. They claim that Mrs. Calabash was really a local woman named Lucille "Lucy" Coleman. In 1940, Lucy was 28 years old and running a restaurant in Calabash, then a tiny seaside community bordering South Carolina. Durante and his touring entertainment troupe are said to have stopped in for supper one night. It may have been the genuine homespun friendliness of the young restaurant owner that prompted the gregarious Jimmy Durante to beckon Lucy over to his table for some short chitchat. His acting was enthusiastic rather than accomplished. But James Francis Durante managed to become a well-loved star in virtually every medium of 20 th -century entertainment: stage, screen, radio, and television. He is also one of the few show-biz legends about whom not one bad word has been spoken. It was a tough neighborhood Jimmy Durante was born into on February 10, 1893, but a loving family. Jimmy was funny-looking from an early age and took a great deal of ribbing in school about his outsized nose. "I’d go home and cry," he recalled. "I made up my mind never to hurt anybody else, no matter what. I never made jokes about anybody’s big ears, cross eyes, or their stuttering." His family also helped. They gave him enough love and a good enough self-image so that his ego managed to survive ruthless childhood taunts. They also gave him piano lessons, though that might never have happened had the Durantes known where their son would start his professional career. Jimmy dropped out of school in the eighth grade and took a number of odd jobs before landing his first show business position, as ragtime pianist in a series of very disreputable joints. From 1910 till 1914, Jimmy learned his trade at Diamond Tony’s on Coney Island, the Chatham Club in Chinatown, Maxine’s in Brooklyn, and a dozen or so others. They ranged from bars to cabarets to out-and-out whorehouses. "Ragtime Jimmy" not only became a talented piano player, but he learned the ins and outs of handling crowds—he also became lifelong friends with a singing waiter named Eddie Cantor.
