Hoarded Ordinaries Main March 27, 2004 Three's company Well, at least Chris had the decency to warn me that he'd be coming home with a new love. I knew he was stopping on his way home from North Carolina to visit the luthier in New Jersey whom he'd hired to build either a new 10-course lute or a 7-course vihuela. Presumably the purpose of the visit was to help Chris decide between the lute and vihuela and to give Cezar a feel for how large an instrument would be appropriate. But love, of course, works in mysterious ways. All it took was some conversation, lunch, and a personal check, and Chris walked out of there with a not-entirely-new 6-course vihuela, Cezar's own personal baby. Not only is Chris a player, he can be quite charming when he needs to be. So now I'm doubly widowed, competing with Chris's now-old lute and his new-to-him, stunningly gorgeous vihuela. Vihuelas, if you don't follow early music, are Spanish Renaissance double-strung guitars. They are, as you can see, small and ornately decorated. The 5 sets of double strings provide volume; the 6th single bass string provides fullness. Unlike lutes, vihuelas are flat-backed, which makes them perfect for self-accompanying singers: now Chris has real incentive to learn Spanish so he can perform a whole new repertoire of Spanish Renaissance songs. over a month ago flitted from tree to tree in various neighbors' yards: after having sought them far and wide, now they've come in droves to my own backyard.

Charles R. Drew Also known as: Charles Richard Drew, Charles Drew, Dr. Charles R. Drew (1904-1950) Surgeon and blood researcher Charles R. Drew was a renowned surgeon, teacher, and researcher. He was responsible for founding two of the world's largest blood banks. Because of his research into the storage and shipment of blood plasma-blood without cells-he is credited with saving the lives of hundreds of Britons during World War II. He was director of the first American Red Cross effort to collect and bank blood on a large scale. In 1942, a year after he was made a diplomat of surgery by the American Board of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University, he became the first African American surgeon to serve as an examiner on the board. Charles Richard Drew was the eldest of five children. In 1943 he became the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. He was an inspiration and role model to his students and received numerous honorary degrees and awards during this period of his life, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Spingarn Medal in 1944. Dr. Charles Richard Drew by Jacob Stumpf The Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet is named after a brilliant man. Charles Richard Drew was born on June 3, 1904 in Washington D.C. He attended the Stevens Elementary School. When he graduated from there he entered Paul Laurence Dunbar High. There he became the best all-around athlete. At age 15 he first imagined becoming a doctor after he watched his sister die of tuberculosis. He graduated from High school and was awarded a partial scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts. At Amherst College, Charles was almost totally surrounded by whites. He still excelled in sports but started to again turn his attention to medicine after a tackler left a metal cleat in his thigh. He was still voted the football captain, but only with much fighting from other students. His grades were averaging to about B's and C's in everything but biology. He applied to Howard University but was turned down. He told his brother Joe "Someday I'll come back and run this place." Weeks later he was accepted to McGill University in Montreal Canada. Charles excelled at McGill, but still made time for sports. He thought that Canadians were color-blind because there was no segregation in Canada. He lived on $10 dollars a week. In the fall of 1930, Charles won a Rosenwald Scholarship, a prestigious award for the education of black students. Charles impressed his anatomy instructor, Dr. John Beattie. Beattie facinated Charles with his work with blood. Before long Charles was reading everything he could on blood. Charles and Beattie became friends and began to do experiments together.

Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles is named, was a brilliant Black physician, famous for his pioneering work in blood preservation. Born in Washington, D.C. on June 3, 1904, his life ended in an auto accident just two months before his 46th birthday. The intervening years were crowded with achievements, learning and sharing his knowledge to benefit mankind. In 1926 he graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts, where his athletic prowess in track and football earned him the Mossman trophy as the man who contributed most to athletics for four years. Dr. Drew taught biology and served as coach at Morgan State College in Baltimore before entering McGill University School of Medicine. As a medical student, he became an Alpha Omega Alpha Scholar and won the J. Francis Fellowship, based on a competitive examination given annually to the top five students in the graduating class. In 1933, he received his M.D. degree. His first appointment at Howard University was as faculty instructor in pathology from 1935-36, and later as an instructor in surgery and an assistant at Freedmen's Hospital, a federally operated facility associated with Howard. In 1939, Dr. Drew married Lenora Robbins. They had four children: Bebe, Charlene, Rhea, and Charles. In 1944, he received the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP for his work on British and American Projects. Virginia State College conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Science in 1945, and his alma mater Amherst conferred the same degree in 1947.
