By Janelle Brown 4:37 p.m. PDT July 12 DotComGuy is sitting on his couch, watching television. I can hear traffic going by his house, a horn honking. The phone rings, and he jumps up to answer it, pacing back and forth like a trapped man. "Oh yeah. Definitely. Awesome!" he exclaims into the receiver, in elevated tones designed to be picked up by a microphone and beamed to the ears of millions of invisible listeners. He hangs up the phone, sits down, stares blankly at the television. A few minutes later, two of DotComGuy's friends show up with a bag of food although the picture is grainy and dim on my computer monitor, I think I can make out french fries. The three sit in silence. They are watching "Seinfeld" reruns. Is there any cause worthy enough that you'd voluntarily commit to house arrest, putting yourself under 24-hour scrutiny by a global audience? What impetus would you require to allow your conversations to be recorded, your activities monitored, to live like a guppy in a fishbowl so that anyone who stumbled onto the Internet could tune in to ogle your every move?

After a year of self-imposed captivity, relying solely on e-commerce for survival, DotComGuy , aka Mitch Maddox, emerged from his Web exile as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve. Maddox’s self-proclaimed purpose for DotComGuy was "to help people realize the possibilities of e-commerce." The question is: did he? "There's nothing we could have done to change e-commerce," Len Critcher, chief executive officer of DotComGuy, Inc., told the E-Commerce Times. "We were a barometer of what was happening around us. We provided a cool, infotainment family/friendly venue that maybe opened some eyes to something positive online." The DotComGuy experiment did establish that it is possible for someone to live using online resources exclusively, even if the results are less than ideal, according to Critcher.

DotComGuy seeks an end to the Internet life
    February 18, 2004
Now he will go back to being just plain Mitch Maddox, legally changing his name back, to the delight of his wife, whom he met where else? on the Internet.
Maddox got worldwide attention in 2000 when he legally changed his name to DotComGuy, in a promotion aimed at demonstrating how the Internet could be used for food, furniture and other necessities.
With sponsors including United Parcel Service, 3Com, Network Solutions, Piper Jaffray and Travelocity, he spent the entire year of 2000 in his home in Dallas Texas, living off the Internet.
All food and other necessities were ordered off the Internet and delivered to the home he never left.
But now, he wants to get his old name back, and is auctioning off the DotComGuy.com domain name.
"From a business perspective, I've taken DotComGuy as far as I can," he told AFP in an e-mail message.

Klik! - 10.1.2001 DotComGuy nostatti kritiikin hyökyaallon Silmätikkuna netin kaupallistaminen
Kaikki eivät rakasta DotComGuyta. Innostuneiden fanisivustojen rinnalle kasvoi vuoden aikana kitkerien kommenttien viidakko.
Yleisimmin DotComGuyta syytettiin netin kaupallistamisesta.
DotComGuyn sivuilta löytyvien nettikauppa-arvioiden luotettavuus joutui vaakalaudalle.

Dallas's DotComGuy calls it quits By Associated Press
    Published: 03/19/04
DALLAS (AP) DotComGuy is up for auction.
"I've taken it as far as I can go," said Mitch Maddox, the
30-year-old Dallas computer geek who legally changed his name to
DotComGuy and survived for a year living off purchases made on the
    Internet in 2000.
Video footage of his life was streamed on the Internet 24 hours
a day and attracted worldwide media attention.
The voyeuristic display included celebrity visits such as Ed McMahon and the rock bank Incubus. At its peak, his Web site attracted millions of hits a day, but public interest quickly waned. Six months into the project, there were technical difficulties and some corporate sponsors bailed. "People always ask you if it was boring. That's the last thing it was," Maddox said in Wednesday's online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "That was a life experience packed into one year that could easily fill 30 years."

( pmo
