Does DotComguy live in e-utopia or a publicity hut?
In this story:
Trouble with shoes, not potential wives A virtual billboard for sponsors NotComGuy takes on DotComGuy 'A time when I flip out a little' ... RELATED STORIES, SITES January 25, 2000 Web posted at: 12:18 p.m. EST (1718 GMT) By Richard Stenger CNN Interactive Writer (CNN) Barraged by reporters, mobbed by chat room fans, courted by talk shows, DotComGuy has struck a high-tech nerve since beginning his self-imposed exile this month. The twentysomething, former corporate computing drone has agreed to stay in a house until 2001, foraging out into the world only via the Internet, which he asserts will supply all his needs. DotComGuy, his recently assumed legal name, has so far put on a happy face in front of the dozen or so Web cameras in his house, calling most domestic activities "fun," most interview questions "excellent" and ending most daily journal entrees with the mantra, "I love the Internet." But questions remain about the independence of DotComGuy.com's Web site reviews, which glow brightly when they concern sponsors. And critics, including the self-professed NotComGuy, dismiss his vision of e-utopia as a publicity stunt.

DotComGuy wants to end it all
Posted Wed, 17 Mar 2004 He spent four years as "DotComGuy", including a year holed up in a Dallas home living entirely off the internet. Now he will go back to being just plain Mitch Maddox, legally changing his name back, to the delight of his wife, whom he met — where else? — on the internet. Maddox got worldwide attention in 2000 when he legally changed his name to DotComGuy, in a promotion aimed at demonstrating how the internet could be used for food, furniture and other necessities. With sponsors including United Parcel Service, 3Com, Network Solutions, Piper Jaffray and Travelocity, he spent the entire year of 2000 in his home in Dallas Texas, living off the internet. All food and other necessities were ordered off the internet and delivered to the home he never left.

March 17, 2004 The registered trademark, DotComGuy(R) and the domain name registration dotcomguy.com, will be offered for sale through an auction at http://www.dotcomguy.com. Four years ago, DotComGuy(R), borne Mitch Maddox, gained worldwide attention by moving into an empty two-bedroom house in Dallas, planning to live entirely off the Internet. Before moving in, Mitch legally changed his name to DotComGuy(R). Transformed from "average Joe" to Internet-guru, DotComGuy(R) became an Internet cyber-celebrity, ushering in the current reality-show craze. DotComGuy(R) succeeded in his mission - never leaving the house for the entire year. DotComGuy(R) achieved incredible media attention, with more than one billion media impressions in less than three months. DotComGuy(R) is ready to close this chapter of his life and quietly ride off into the sunset as Mitch Maddox once again. Next week, DotComGuy(R) will legally change his name back to Mitch Maddox at a Dallas courthouse. He is married now, and he and his wife plan to take an around-the-world honeymoon as Mr. and Mrs. Mitch Maddox. (His wife is very happy to not be known as Mrs. DotComGuy(R)!)

Now he will go back to being just plain Mitch Maddox, legally changing his name back, to the delight of his wife, whom he met where else? on the Internet.
Maddox got worldwide attention in 2000 when he legally changed his name to DotComGuy, in a promotion aimed at demonstrating how the Internet could be used for food, furniture and other necessities.

All food and other necessities were ordered off the Internet and delivered to the home he never left.
But now, he wants to get his old name back, and is auctioning off the DotComGuy.com domain name.
"From a business perspective, I've taken DotComGuy as far as I can," he told AFP in an e-mail message. "Now, it's time to let someone else leverage the brand for their own success. On a personal level, I must admit it's been a lot of fun being 'DotComGuy,' but I'm glad that I can move on with my family name."
