His best known film role was as the eponymous schoolmaster in Goodbye, Mr Chips , for which he was awarded an Oscar. Robert Donat
Robert Donat (1905-1958) was a British actor , perhaps best known for his Oscar-winning performance in the title role of the 1939 film "Goodbye Mr Chips". Although Robert Donat gained popularity through his film performances, he also performed regularly on stage and his voice was frequently heard on the radio. Unfortunately, his career was dogged by asthma and he died at a relatively early age in 1958. Robert Donat learnt the art of the actor as a Bensonite, performing Shakespeare on tour with Sir Frank Benson, followed by a couple of seasons doing rep at Liverpool and Cambridge. His collaboration with the film director, Alexander Korda in 1931, introduced him to the silver screen and by the end of the 1930's he was one of Britain's greatest filmstars, starring in films which included The Count of Monte Cristo (1934), The 39 Steps (1935), Goodbye Mr Chips (1939) and The Winslow Boy (1948). Although the film industry proved to be more lucrative, his true love was the theatre and he created several memorable roles including Becket in Murder in the Cathedral at London Old Vic in 1953, which received the longest first-night ovation in the history of the theatre.

Robert Donat March 18 June 9 ) was an English actor , best remembered for his roles in The 39 Steps and Goodbye, Mr. Chips (for which he won an Academy Award ). Donat was born in Manchester , of Polish descent, but his success owed much to the image of an English gentleman which he projected. He made his first stage appearance in and his film debut in in The Private Life of Henry VIII , under the great Alexander Korda . However, he suffered from ill-health ( asthma ) throughout his career, and his last role, as a Chinese mandarin in The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is memorable because it was apparent that he knew he was close to death. He was married briefly to British actress Renee Asherson. This content from wikipedia is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License Power Supplies Hardware Information Law Advice

Donat plays a dual role in the film as Donald Glourie, the debt-ridden owner of a Scottish castle, who shares his run-down home with the eighteenth-century ghost of Murdoch Glourie (also Robert Donat), whose soul is doomed to get no rest until he takes revenge on the rival clan of the Maclaggans to settle an ancient feud. To clear his debts, Donald sells the castle, complete with ghost, shipped over to Florida and Donald goes along to oversee the job. The ghost wreaks havoc with the castle's new owners and causes endless complications. The results are hilariously funny and triumphantly entertaining, making the film one of Korda's greatest successes.

Biographical history
Friedrich Robert Donat was born on 18 March 1905 in Withington, Manchester, the fourth and youngest son of Emil Ernst (1863-1939), a Polish-born civil engineer, and Rose Alice ( Green, 1864-1964) who came from Whitby in Yorkshire. He attended Ducie Avenue Central School in Ardwick, Manchester, later moving to the Central High School for Boys. His memories of school were mixed: he was not an outstanding scholar and as a schoolboy he also suffered from a serious stammar. Outside school one of his principal passions was the cinema, but from an early age he was also enthusiastic about the theatre, staging plays in the garden shed at his home in St Paul's Road which he transformed into the 'Star Theatre of Varieties'. He subsequently became a pupil of the well-known Manchester elocutionist, James Bernard, under whom he received stage-training and elocution lessons which helped him to shed both his stutter and his broad Lancashire accent (although he was to enjoy reviving this in stage and film roles later in life). Under Bernard he also began to develop his famous speaking voice and his gift for reciting verse. His teacher advocated a stage career for the young Robert, who consequently left school at 15; he worked as Bernard's secretary to fund his continued lessons, while taking part in dramatic recitals at venues across the North West of England.
