In mid-December 2002, the Boston Society of Architects elected Dixon to a one-year presidency term. As president of the BSA, Dixon leads the largest and most active AIA chapter in the US, and is also co-chairing the BSA's Civic Initiative for a Livable New England, a regional smart growth initiative. VISITING SCHOLARS Dr. David Dixon Pacific Northwest National Labs EMSI Visiting Scholar April 15-18, 2003 Seminar: "Computational Thermochemistry - From the Gas Phase to Solution" Tuesday, April 15, 2003, 4:00 p.m., Interschool Lab, 7th Floor Schapiro CEPSR The development of new theoretical methods, algorithms, and software which incorporates these advances on modern high performance, massively parallel computer architectures is leading to new insights into the behavior of molecules and to the use of simulation methods to replace expensive experiments. These new hardware and software developments promise to revolutionize the size and types of chemical systems that can be treated. We will describe how these advances in computational chemistry can be used for predicting the heats of formation of molecules including those of interest in combustion processes and in nitrogen chemistry. We will describe the prediction of the free energies of solvation of the proton, hydroxide anion, and electron in aqueous solution. We will describe the prediction of accurate fluoride affinities for use in establishing a Lewis acidity scale. Jornada Observatory IAU code 715 Las Cruces o o 43' Alt. 1336 Meters Jornada's Observatory code was assigned by the MPC on 31 Oct. 1998. The initial observation program was focused on main belt object follow up. In early 2000 an increased awareness of the role of impact events on the history of the earth, and the need for observations of NEOs at magnitudes greater than 20V led to a change in focus to NEO observation. Jornada observatory is beginning an astrometry program focused on recovery and follow up of NEOs. Priority is the recovery of multiple and single opposition NEOs which will exceed magnitude 21.0 but don’t exceed magnitude 19.0 during the opposition, and follow-up of newly discovered NEOs that are in the 19V to 21V brightness range and getting dimmer. The NEOs that are expected to become brighter than magnitude 19.0 during the opposition will be considered second priority targets since there is a reasonable expectancy of recovery by the professional surveys during their normal search work. Construction of the permanent observatory pictured below was began in July 2000 dome automation was completed in Feb. 2001 although limited operations had commenced in the fall of 2000.
