Tuesday, March 26, 2002 New Day, same old ways Celine's latest CD full of bombast, melodrama and soaring ballads By MIKE ROSS Edmonton Sun A NEW DAY HAS COME Celine Dion (Columbia-Sony) In stores today, A New Day Has Come picks up where Falling Into You left off. In other words, the new album is a fully loaded Hindenburg of bombast, melodrama and soaring love ballads indistinguishable from anything she's ever done. Attempts at modernity are spotty, though welcome. Some of it sounds like Destiny's Child outtakes. A track called Ten Days reveals her rock 'n' roll side, such that it is, or maybe it's an Alannah Myles outtake. She channels Cher in Sorry For Love while singing circles around same. A couple of pop standards round out the collection. And there's even a bit of Spanish frippery called Aun Existe Amor, which one can safely assume is also about love.

Reviews Celine Dion - A New Day Has Come Home Reviews Albums 2002 After a break Celine returns with an album full of great up-tempo songs as well as wonderful ballads. It opens up with "I'm Alive". A happy pop song about a man who makes her feel alive, which is followed by "Right In Front Of You", another fast happy love song where she sees that the one for her was actually right in front of her - sometimes it's hard to see the obvious. The first slow song is "Have You Ever Been In Love" and it is very beautiful. At the end of this big ballad she gets to show how good she can be when she puts some power in her singing. In "Ten days" she almost goes blues. It's not the average Celine Dion song and not one of my favourites on this album, but still not bad. Following that, the two most beautiful ballads come. First, there is "Goodbye (The Saddest Word)" produced by "Mutt" Lange - Shania Twain's husband. That of course ensures a very nice production. It gets even better on "Prayer" however, since that was written and produced by Walter Afanasieff (who has also worked with Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey among others). He knows how to make music. Her wonderful voice with his songwriting and production make a perfect combination. The song almost has a Christmas feel to it.

In addition to a CBS concert special on Nov. 24, there's this 16-song collection of Dion's greatest hits in stores Tuesday. But the new release has seven new tunes alongside such uberhits as Beauty And The Beast, Because You Loved Me and My Heart Will Go On. Of the new songs, the one sure to attract the most attention is a duet with Frank Sinatra on All The Way, a crass, commercial attempt to meld two of the top voices of the century with ho-hum results. You can thank producer David Foster for that one, although in the liner notes, Dion insists All The Way is actually her and husband Rene Angelil's "special song." Dion and Foster actually do their understated best on a cover of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, the song that was a 1972 hit for Roberta Flack.

We got the Pop Diva Whitney Houston, that cute little redhead from Oklahoma named Reba is the biggest thing in Country Music since the broken down pickup, and we have, who I proclaim the "queen of fucked up, tortured, and introverted genius souls" Tori Amos (I pretty sure she's American, from Baltimore I think, but I still think she's fucked up - not that that's bad, just what I think). Well let me give all you girls notice that there is a new heavy hitter in town and she's swinging a bat bigger than Frank Thomas's. I'm talking about the French-Canadian singing Diva, Celine Dion. Promptly at 9pm Celine graced the stage dressed in a snappy white pants suit, and with a husky voice belted out the tune "I'm Your Lady." After few comments about her 1996 Olympics experience she let loose with "Seduces Me." It was at this point I knew something was different about her show. Everyone was still sitting. It wasn't because the people weren't enjoying the show, their applauds sent quite the opposite message. The crowd just didn't feel like standing. I don't think I've ever been to a concert where I hadn't stood from the start to the finish. I've often wondered why most venues bother to provide seats because people always stand. People love Celine Dion. They love her voice. What's not to love? She's got a remarkable set of pipes for such a tiny woman. The songs chosen for her to sing are invariably on the subject of love, in its many splendored and sometimes sappy forms. And everyone involved in Dion's latest album is going to love all the money they're going to make. Ergo - this turns out to be as bombastic, overdone and unfocused as anything she's ever recorded. In stores Tuesday - a week after Barbra Streisand's latest release (age before beauty) - Let's Talk About Love is also as predictable as winter following autumn. Frothy love ballads produced by David Foster? Check. Dance-floor romps that reveal Dion's disco-diva side? Check. High-priced duets? Check twice: Tell Him with Babs and also on a mildly Italian-flavored love ballad called I Hate You Then I Love You with Luciano Pavarotti. It's a real vocal battle royale, as you might expect. "More is more" is the rule here. Orchestras lurk in the background waiting to pounce into the fray at any moment. Insipid lyrics abound ("let's talk about love/it's the king of all who live and the queen of good hearts/it's the ace you may keep up your sleeve"). And an inevitable children's choir shows up in the closing track - co-written by Bryan Adams, one of many big names on the album.
