Author Eric Jerome Dickey, who worked as a computer programmer, middle school teacher, actor and stand-up comic before becoming a full-time novelist, is described by some in the publishing industry as "the classic brotherman novelist who has crossed race lines with his readership." Q: How did you begin writing? A: I didn't start (creative) writing until I was getting laid off from aerospace. So, for nine years I read mostly computer manuals and did technical writing. I'd majored in Computer Systems Technology, and had assumed that I'd always be in that field. But I've always had another, creative side. A silly side that didn't match my former occupation. I'd written a few shorts in high school, nothing great, but during the time I was about to get laid off, I sat back and recaptured that. Remembered how much fun it was to make something out of nothing, and get ALL of the credit for it. I hadn't read a novel in umpteen years before I started writing, and had associated reading with school and work, never pleasure. Had no writing classes, just went for it. Q: How did you get your "big break?"

Eric Jerome Dickey Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and earned a degree in Computer System Technology. In 1983 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering. After landing a job in the aerospace industry working as a software developer, Eric's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. He soon began working the local and national comedy circuit. In the early 1990s the aerospace industry took a downward turn and Dickey found himself "downsized," but took this as an opportunity to embark on a writing career. Having written several comedy scripts for his personal comedy act, Eric started writing poetry and short stories. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's Creative Writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story "Thirteen" appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing, Voices of the Diaspora an Anthology of the International Black Experience.

Had you previously developed any characters with a voice as strong as hers? What was it about Babysister that intrigued you? A. First of all, thanks for noting Babysister's strong voice. She's so different from me and I worked very hard at keeping her voice consistent. Before writing Please Please Please, I only wrote short stories and a few poems. And yes, what drove all of the stories were the character's voices. I've always been drawn to characters I don't necessarily see in literature and usually they are women who make wrong choices and have to deal with the consequences. I enjoy creating "people" not necessarily plots. I'm especially interested in women who are flawed in some way and women who are different from me (not that I don't have my share of flaws!)
