A Bare-Bones Account of Human Evolution Derek Bickerton The Dawn of Human Culture Human evolution is not a neglected topic: A search on amazon.com, for example, turns up more than 1,400 books on the subject. Stanford anthropologist Richard Klein has written several, including the widely acclaimed The Human Career, and science writer Blake Edgar has collaborated with Donald Johanson on two. True, knowledge of our ancestry is growing fast, so there are always new additions to the old story. But more than that is needed to justify yet another overview of how we became us. The new book Klein has written with Edgar

Tony Robinson, 55, loves the multiple facets of his career. "The nice thing is people recognise me for all the different things I do," he says.
Recognition comes in various guises for Tony Robinson star of Black adder and Time Team, and Labour NEC member.
  • He says: "Blackadder fans call out Blackadder's catchphrase 'I have a cunning plan', Time Team lovers want me to dig up their gardens, while Tories shout 'You Labour idiot'. "Kids also remember me as the scary Sheriff of Nottingham in my kids' series Maid Marian And Her Merry Men in the '90s."

Derek Walcott I who am poisoned with the blood of both
Where shall I turn, divided to the vein?
    I who have cursed
The drunken officer of British rule, how choose
Between this Africa and the British tongue I love?
from "A Far Cry from Africa" Introduction
    Early Life and Poetry
Walcott was born in 1930 on the island of St. Lucia, the posthumous child of a civil servant and a schoolteacher, and the descendent of two white grandfathers and two black grandmothers. Though his first language was a French-English patois, he received an English education, an apprenticeship in language that his mother supported by reciting English poetry at home and by exposing her children to the European classics at an early age. In "What the Twilight Says," an autobiographical essay published in 1970, Walcott writes of the two worlds that informed his childhood: "Colonials, we began with this malarial enervation: that nothing could ever be built among these rotting shacks, barefooted backyards and moulting shingles; that being poor, we already had the theater of our lives. In that simple schizophrenic boyhood one could lead two lives: the interior life of poetry, and the outward life of action and dialect (4)."
    Early Dramatic Writings
    Mature Writings
Life and Work in the United States Nobel Prize and Omeros
Since winning the Nobel Prize, Walcott has continued to write prolifically, producing a new epic poem, The Bounty, in 1992 and, more recently, a collection of poems entitled TiepoloĆs Hounds, which examines the life and art of impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. In these works, he continues to explore the complex legacy of colonialism with a poetic vision that recognizes the range of traditions comprising his beloved West Indies, and with a poetic voice that harmonizes the discord between the English canon and his native dialect.

    174. Derek Jarman (1942-1994)
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film.
    http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/1211/derekjarman.html
Derek Jarman (1942-1994) Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film Born: January 31, 1942, Northwood, England Died: February 19, 1994, London, England Leading avant-garde British filmmaker whose visually opulent and stylistically adventurous body of work stands in defiant opposition to the established literary and theatrical traditions of his sometimes staid national cinema. With influences ranging from the eccentric writing-directing team Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger to seminal gay aesthetes Jean Cocteau and Kenneth Anger, Jarman advocated a personal cinema more dedicated to striking imagery and evocative sounds than to the imperatives of narrative and characterization. His comments on one of his strongest films are revealing: The Last of England works with image and sound, a language which is nearer to poetry than prose. It tells its story quite happily in silent images, in contrast to a word-bound cinema." Like the noted American underground filmmaker Anger, Jarman displayed a fascination with violence, homoeroticism, gay representation and mythopoeic imagery. Proudly and openly gay, Jarman shared news of his HIV infection with his public and incorporated his subsequent battles with AIDS into his work, particularly in The Garden (1990) and Blue (1993). Excavating and reclaiming suppressed gay history was an ongoing project that informed his several unconventional biopics: SEBASTIANE (1975), Jarman's sun-drenched directorial debut about the martyred Christian saint; the unusually accessible and slyly anachronistic

St. Derek was a gay/queer film maker, set designer and writer, whose life expressed a fierce desire for a world where human lives weren't deformed by homophobia, poverty (including artistic poverty), 'respectability', and the policing of gender identity. He was canonised by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence shortly before his martyrdom in 1994. Please light a candle in memory of Queer St. Derek. You are visitor number
Holy Derek, Pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death. A Short Biography of Derek Jarman
Saint Derek was born on 31st January 1942, son of a RAF officer of Kiwi extraction. Derek's progress towards sainthood was at times slow, he only slowly grew to express his sexuality happily, given the silence, fear and prejudice about same-sex love that characterised the 'fifties in middle class England. But then the dear, dear 'sixties came along and he left home, and the frozen ice of his emotional sea found its spring.
Things changed fast and radically. He rejected the social mores of his upbringing, more notably those of his father (his mum encouraged her son's 'unconventionality'). He started enjoying life rather too much for decency. There's a wonderful picture of this period in his Modern Nature - interspersed with the most beautiful discussion of flowers (it's the gay modern equivalent of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady ) - his involvement in films developed slowly, with many difficult periods when money was hard to come by. Gay related film didn't feature highly on the agenda of the film industry in those days - the films are wonderful, if not infrequently angry. The anger of the early films was something he later felt was perhaps a bit regrettable. Jarman could 'fizz' with saintly, righteous anger against the illogicalities of a world that had pushed him and the gay and lesbian tribe, to its edges. His work became, to my mind, yet more interesting as he got older, with films dealing with religion (a recurring concern), philosophy and death.
