Davide Chiara, 8 Maggio 2002 Femme Fatale di Brian De Palma Brian De Palma è sicuramente uno di quei pochi autori che hanno davvero fatto del Cinema. Lavori quali "Blow-Out", "Scarface" e "Gli Intoccabili" sono tra le opere più incisive dell'ultima generazione, e che, chiunque ami il genere, non può fare a meno di vedere e rivedere all'infinito. Thriller maturi e brillanti esercizi di stile che hanno ispirato intere schiere di autori più o meno bravi, e che a distanza di vent'anni rimangono ancora attuali, se non addirittura del tutto innovativi. Non sembra inopportuno, quindi, recarsi oggigiorno a vedere un suo nuovo film ed aspettarsi un altro bel capolavoro. Qualcosa che, dopo i mediocri "Mission: Impossible", " Omicidio in diretta " ed il brutto " Mission to Mars ", possa finalmente riscattare la figura di un regista, ormai da troppi anni, rivestito esclusivamente di gloria. "Femme Fatale" però, il suo ultimo ed attesissimo film, non solo non riesce a ripagare quella gloria, ma sembra quasi allontanare ogni ritorno al vecchio stile.

His movies The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible are entertaining but not profound. His film (1990) based on Tom Wolfe's bestseller The Bonfire Of The Vanities is no exception. Like the novel, the film's main characters have an artificial touch, as if they had been designed on a drawing board. Brian De Palma just lacks the bit of sensitivity that would give full credibility to his stars who act like they are performing on a stage play. Peter Fallow (Bruce Willis) is a journalist and writer who tells us the story of a man who had won the world but lost his soul. The man, Sherman McCoy (Tom Hanks), forces his dog to go out in the rain because he wants to call his mistress. By accident, he dials his own number and ends up with his wife on the phone. Although he tries to hide his identity and afterwards denies everything, his wife knows that he had been calling. She is a woman so obsessed with her beauty that even she refuses to cry or get angry - in order to prevent the formation of unnecessary wrinkles. Sherman McCoy is a master of the universe. He just made a $600 million deal on Wallstreet. His commission: $1.6 million. That is a great height to fall from. Together with his lover (Melanie Griffith), the wife of a financier, McCoy misses the Manhattan-exit on the freeway and ends up in the Bronx. Her reaction this is when she realizes that they have ended up 'in a goddam warzone' with a lot of African American: 'Oh my god ... natives!' Before they find a way back to the freeway, McCoy has to move a tire that blocks a street. As he tries to roll it away, to African Americans pass by and tension rises. In panic, his mistress hits one of the black men with Sherman's-car. McCoy and his mistress manage to escape, absconding from the scene of accident.

CanadianGeek the ramblings of a 20-something canadian MAIN INDEX I am always annoyed by the casual use of the word of the word ‘brilliant’. It is so overused it has almost lost all meaning. It is for that reason I am worried about the tone of my review. For you see, this is a brilliant film, perhaps inaccessible to mainstream audiences, but certainly worth at least one viewing. Bravo! Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is in the unfortunate position of being a truly talented actress who must overcome the preconceptions of being an exceptionally beautiful woman. Over a year ago, during the X-MEN hoopla, I saw an interview with her on Jay Leno. It was during that interview I took notice of her and realized that she is someone I am going to pay closer attention to. During a scene that calls for sobbing, Stamos doesn't play it safe. If mishandled her perfomance could have been over-the-top. And I doubt many people would need much of an incentive to slam any actor for being adventurous with their role. - It would have been far to easy to be self-conscious and restrained. Instead throughout this film, Stamos delivers a very effective performance with confidence and the same boldness inherent in her character. A Warning This is a difficult film to describe and I don’t want to be vague, so most of this review will deal with the twists in the story. And this is one of those unusual films where knowing the twist in advance did not ruin the impact of the film for me. In fact it made the experience even more exciting and caused me to be more observant of the details in the film.
