The Doctor (Earthshock, 1982) Watch the Fifth Doctor in action in 'Black Orchid' After seven years enjoying adventures in his fourth persona, it was the latest in a line of battles against the Master that caused the Doctor to fall from the gantry of a radio telescope. This fall had been predicted, however, and, to the astonishment of his companions, the Doctor merged with a mysterious being known only as 'the Watcher', the result being another incarnation. The fifth Doctor was much younger in appearance than any of his predecessors, and had a boyish charm and endearing air of innocence. However his looks belied his intelligence which was put to good use in working out just how to defeat foes as diverse as the burrowing Tractators and the devious Black Guardian. The Doctor liked to rush headlong into action, often breathless with excitement, and his whirlwind enthusiasm affected those around him, particularly the Australian trainee air-stewardess Tegan, Nyssa, the young girl from Traken, and the Alzarian youth Adric. As this Doctor appeared younger than the others, he often took on a more 'elder brother' role with his companions as opposed to the father figure of earlier incarnations.

Producer John Nathan-Turner sought long and hard to find a suitable replacement and found his man in the form of Peter Davison, a well-respected actor known for his role as Tristan Farnon in the popular BBC series "All Creatures Great and Small" and currently starring in the comedy series "Sink or Swim". Davison joined the cast in late 1980 in a cameo role in Tom Baker's final story "Logopolis," joining series regular Matthew Waterhouse and new stars Sarah Sutton and Janet Fielding in the crucial regeneration scene.
For three years, Davison took the role and made it his own... an altogether different sort of Doctor from his predecessor. More apt to solve problems with diplomacy than running headstrong into the action, the "younger" Doctor blended the scientific mind of the Jon Pertwee incarnation with the youthful enthusiasm of Patrick Troughton. Indeed, at the onset of his run he was quite the "youngster" while by his final story, "The Caves of Androzani" he wore spectacles... proof positive that Davison's acting range ran the gamut.
Peter Davison left the programme in 1984 after a three-year run in the hands of his successor Colin Baker (who had himself appeared as a guest star in "Arc of Infinity"). Davison, who stayed a popular figure in the Doctor Who fan and convention milieu, returned for the Children in Need adventure "Dimensions in Time" in 1993 and currently is starring along with Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann in Big Finish Productions' very successful line of Doctor Who audio adventures, which has reunited him with companions Mark Strickson (Turlough), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) and Nicola Bryant (Peri), as well as introduced a new companion (Erimem) played by Caroline Morris.

FINDING TIME TO WRITE
Years ago I read a truly discerning piece of advice about writing. If a poem you're struggling with doesn't conclude properly, said the late Richard Hugo, look a few lines before the end for the trouble: trouble is seldom located where you think. So it is that "finding time to write" is seldom what keeps writing from getting done. In nearly half a century as an editor I have been hearing complaints from writers about the difficulty of finding time to writeespecially as the deadlines for their book contracts approached. Those in the teaching profession were particularly vociferous. I have taught very little, but in the course of a lifetime of meeting deadlinesthose set by myself and those set by othersit has seemed to me that the difficulty comes not at the end of the writing task but at the outset, in the middle, and every day. What's not begun will never end. I did not begin this piece of writing in order to scold. Time lies all around us, when beepers and e-mail and paper memoranda demand instant replies. I do not for a moment minimize the difficulties that the Information Age thrusts upon us: the requirement to hold oneself alert and available at all hours, the expectation of always being on stage. Yet the great writers we admire have somehow, whether they be Balzac or Proust, always beat their deadlines when the word called. In his late sixties today, John Updike seems to have no difficulty "finding" the time to write poems and novels, to say nothing of some little thing a couple of times a month for The New Yorker or the New York Review of Books or the New York Times Book Review or for some local pageant or charitable purpose. Writers like Updike write because it's what they do.
