Known as 'The Fifth Warner Brother,' Bette Davis began in Hollywood with a 6 month Universal Studio contract in 1930. The Studio rep who was to meet her on her arrival at the train station left without Bette, cause he said there was nobody who looked like a movie star. In 1932, Bette signed a 7 year contract with Warner Brothers. Bette married four times and had three children, one of whom was severely retarded. Her daughter B.D. wrote a scandalistic book in 1985 called 'My Mother's Keeper.' In 1977, the American Film Institute presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. All About Eve would be my personal choice for her finest performance, but I really want it to be What Ever Happened To Baby Jane. Bette Davis speaking of Joan Crawford: "I wouldn't piss on her if she was on fire." "She's slept with every male star at MGM, except Lassie." Davis, Bette E Pronunciation Key Davis, Bette , American film actress, b. Lowell, Mass., as Ruth Elizabeth Davis. One of the most durable stars of the American screen, she made her debut in 1931. With compelling and distinctive features, she was difficult to promote as a romantic figure. Her successful early roles included Of Human Bondage (1934) and Dangerous (1935), for which she won an Academy Award. Frustrated at the lack of better roles, she broke her contract with Warner Brothers and lost a subsequent court case in which the standard seven-year contract binding a performer to one studio was upheld. But Davis found her niche as the troubled woman in search of romance in such films as Jezebel (1938), for which she won another Academy Award, and The Little Foxes (1941). When her popularity began to decline in the 1950s, she responded by accepting offbeat, even bizarre, roles in

A subsequent Broadway role in Solid South won her a film contract. She went to Hollywood in 1931, playing in minor roles until her characterization of Mildred, the cockney waitress in Of Human Bondage (1934), established her reputation as an important actress. In 1935 she won an Academy Award for her powerful portrayal of the aging alcoholic star in Dangerous (1935). Her other notable films of the 1930s were The Petrified Forest Jezebel (1938), for which she won her second Academy Award; Dark Victory (1939); and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex Often plagued by mediocre scripts, over which she fought some spectacular legal battles with Warner Brothers studio, Davis nonetheless turned in performances of the highest caliber, demonstrating endless versatility in such films as
