Love is not as necessary to a man's happiness as it is to a woman's. If her marriage is satisfactory, a woman will seldom stray. A man can be totally contented and still be out howling at the moon."

page 1 of BY HOWARD MANDELBAUM Bette Davis is the exception to every rule. The tin-plated platitudes out of which show-biz bios are fabricated simply don't work. Stars were supposed to be "pretty," but her eyes bulge, her nose droops over thin lips, her breasts sag, her hips spread, and any display of legs would most certainly have hindered the war effort. Female stars were supposed to be "feminine," but Davis thrust raw emotion at audiences without apology, demanding that attention be paid. What's more, during a period in which thought was considered "man's country," Davis created characters who used their heads for more than chapeaux. (Of course, her brainpower tends to be harnessed for selfish schemes rather than for humanity. Unlike Greer Garson, she felt no compulsion to discover radium.) Millions of moviegoers responded to the challenge of her headstrong, neurotic heroines who, like

By Jim Emerson When my former Seattle Times editor called me, a few months after I'd moved to Los Angeles, to say he wanted me to interview Bette Davis, I wasn't as thrilled as I probably should have been. I realized it was a rare opportunity she was giving only three interviews to promote the paperback version of her book about recovering from her stroke but Bette Davis had never been my glass of lemonade. I just never really got the whole Bette-Davis-As-Icon thing. To me, she was a movie star, a part of Hollywood history (I admired the way she took on the studio bosses when they and she were at the peak of their powers), but with the exception of All About Eve (where she really used her movie-star mega-wattage as part of the role), I hadn't regarded her as a great actress. I mean, she was no Barbara Stanwyck, who was equally adept as a screwball comedienne, a tragic heroine, or a femme fatale. But of course, I wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to interview a screen legend; there just weren't that many of them left. I remember thinking it was kind of funny and appropriate that she was living on the outskirts of West Hollywood (in the Century House on Havenhurst), mecca to the gay men who really worshipped her. But why did they? Was she just a camp figurehead because her brittle, melodramatic style of acting hadn't aged well? Or was it that she was Larger Than Life, a tough broad who had survived?

Bette Davis, she was a true Hollywood legend and one of the best actresses of the 20th Century. Her career spanned six decades and more than eighty films. No one was ever like her and no one will ever be again. Even in some of her worst films Miss Davis added "fire and music" to the dullest of scripts.
Intense, volatile, ruled too often by her emotions, Bette Davis was described by one critic as "a force of nature that could find no ordinary outlet."
Explore for a while the amazing career of the "Queen of Hollywood," Miss Bette Davis.

Bette Davis filmography Jezebel
Warner Brothers, 1938
Jezebel is a romantic melodrama that takes place in early 1850s New Orleans ante-bellum society. It studied Southern chivalry and honor. The role of the title character was offered as compensation to Bette when she lost the opportunity to play Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. In fact, the film has been called a black-and-white version of the famous Selznick film that was in its pre-production stages. There is a plot that revolves around Julie wearing a red dress to a ball instead of the classic white dress that all unmarried girls wore at the time. Because of the beautiful staging and cinematography, we don't even notice that the infamous red dress is in black and white. Its a classic must see for all Davis fans.

Without wonder and insight, acting is just a trade. With it, it becomes creation. People often become actresses because of something they dislike about themselves: They pretend they are someone else. I am doomed to an eternity of compulsive work. No set goal achieved satisfies. Success only breeds a new goal. The golden apple devoured has seeds. It is endless. Never, never trust anyone who asks for white wine. It means they're phonies.

Welcome to the Kim Carnes Website...
This site was designed to serve as a source of news and useful information about the life and work of Kim Carnes, the multi-talented, Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter best known for the million-selling "Bette Davis Eyes." Although Kim's public profile is not currently as high as it was throughout the 1980s, she has established herself as one of Nashville's premier songwriters, penning hits for Tim McGraw, Reba MacEntire, Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood, Matraca Berg, Pam Tillis, Lila McCann and others. She continues to perform and record, having contributed tracks to several multi-artist albums over the past several years. Kim is planning to return to the studio sometime in the coming months, and a new album is likely to be released later this year or 2001. As you probably realize, the vast majority of Kim's recordings from the 1970s and 1980s remain unissued on compact disc in the United States and virtually all are out of print in the territories (mostly Japan and Australia) where they have been issued. Original CDs of Kim's EMI America albums regularly sell for hundreds of dollars from rare music dealers and on internet auction sites. I hope that the high demand for Kim's CDs will encourage record companies to reissue the albums in Kim's back catalogue on CD in the United States. I also encourage visitors to this website to contact the appropriate record companies and request that their favorite Kim Carnes albums be reissued on CD.

35. Bette Davis: A Who2 Profile

http://www.who2.com/bettedavis.html
BETTE DAVIS Actor Name at birth: Ruth Elizabeth Davis Tart-tongued and independent, Bette Davis was one of America's biggest movies stars in the years surrounding World War II. After several supporting roles in the early 1930s, she began getting more notice and bigger roles in such films as Of Human Bondage (1934) and Dangerous (1935, for which she won an Oscar). In 1938 she won another Oscar for Jezebel (with Henry Fonda ), and throughout the 1940s and '50s appeared in mostly dramas and costumers (including a memorable 1955 turn as Elizabeth I in The Virgin Queen ). Not a typical screen beauty, Davis made up for it with spunk and flamboyance, and off-screen she earned a reputation as a "difficult" star. During the 1960s her career was revived somewhat by a string of horror movies, including What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? , in which she played opposite fellow screen legend Joan Crawford. Late in her career she made television movies, winning three Emmy awards between 1979 and 1983.
Extra credit : Davis's tombstone reads: "She did it the hard way"... In
