Davies was a quite fine actress and comedienne, in silent films; but after the transition to talkies, her abilities were always overshadowed. From what I understand, Marion Davies was a big-hearted woman (she even sold her jewelry to bail Hearst out of financial difficulties) and nearly everyone liked her. Who knows, without Hearst as an albatross, she might've done a lot better in her career. She became an astute businesswoman and continued to contribute to charities right up to her death.
