Audio tour of the MacPlus
Patrick sez, "Digging through his cassette tapes last weekend, this guy came across 'Macintosh Plus: A Guided Tour' and decided he should archive it onto CD for posterity (being a pack rat by nature). It's especially interesting in that it gives a good glimpse of the level of user education necessary at that point in Computer History: it patiently goes over how to interact with icons, how to use the mouse, etc..." Put the floppy disk into the internal disk drive. Put it in with the metal end first...and the label up. Push it all the way in. NOTCON: cheap, fun tech conference in London on June 6
I'm speaking Sunday week (June 6) at NOTCON, an NTK-sponsored tech/politics/culture conference in London. Also on the bill: Brewster Kahle, Bill Thompson, Richard Jones, and many others. Four quid at the door, and if it's anything like the Festival of Inappropriate Technology, it's going to be a scream. Link Update: Danny adds, "the full price is four quid, but there's a quid off if you're a blogger (and not already under 18, a student, unemployed, a journalist, an old age pensioner, or any combination of the above). what more reason do you need to finally kick up that livejournal account and start selected your 'mood'?"

104. Dave Blood - 2003
Life is Shit” Superb lyrics, powerful music and david Wildman. Hell yeah! Obviously his time at IU rubbed off positively. You d love that band, mark.

Dave Blood - 2003 R.I.P. March 10, 2004 Dave Blood was the bass player for Philadelphia’s phinest rock combo of the day, The Dead Milkmen. He’s been up to all sorts of craziness lately, but took the time to answer about a hundred thousand email questions I sent him in late December. If you don’t own any Dead Milkmen records, there is no time like the present! If I were talking about the Moody Blues, I could actually say, “There’s no album like The Present !” and we would enjoy a hearty laugh together, you and I. But the Dead Milkmen never released an album called The Present , so we’re pretty much fucked in the clever wordplay department. Please thank Dave Blood for finally agreeing to be the fourth and final Dead Milkman interviewed for www.markprindle.com (or fifth and final, if you count Jon Wurster). He’s a good solid American man, and should be informed of this situation! My questions are in bold; Dave’s answers are in British-American. Do you still write and play music? I don’t play bass anymore. During the last few years I was playing with the band I developed a nasty case of tendonitis in both hands. It was quite painful and required me to get cortisone shots in my hands when the pain got to be too much to bear… the condition also required me to have to do a bunch of other stuff before and after each show that I won’t even go into. Suffice it to say, my pain and hand problems went away when I stopped playing bass on a regular basis. So, every time I even start to consider picking up the four-stringed love axe again, I hear this voice in the back of my head asking me, “Do you really want to have to take Darvocets in order to be able to tie your shoe laces or twist the lids off of juice bottles?”

March 4, 2002 p.m. utty, slutty David Brock is back. He's nutty in the sense that he seems to have made journalistic self-flagellation his life's work, slutty in the sense that he seems determined to climb into bed with the very the Left-wing toadies whose sensibilities his reportage used to offend, and he's back now to promote a book. His return, in any event, provides a cautionary tale for conservatives. So let's rewind to Brock's poison-pen days of yore. It was in October 1991, as Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Count nominee Clarence Thomas were winding down, that Anita Hill, who'd worked for Thomas for years, came forward with allegations that Thomas had repeatedly made lewd comments to her on the job. Thomas denied this, and the he-said-she-said that ensued riveted the nation; Thomas's characterization of the hearings as a "high tech lynching" became a catchphrase for his defenders, while Hill's supporters produced bumper stickers that read "Honk If You Believe Anita" and attended feminist seminars titled "Women Tell the Truth." Six months after Thomas's narrow confirmation, Brock, then an obscure reporter for

THE HEAVENLY VEIL TORN: MARK'S COSMIC "INCLUSIO"
David Ulansey
[Originally published in Journal of Biblical Literature 110:1 (Spring 1991) pp. 123-25]
In the past few years, several different scholars have argued that there was a connection in the mind of the author of the Gospel of Mark between the tearing of the heavens at the baptism of Jesus (Mk 1:10) and the tearing of the temple veil at the death of Jesus (Mk 15:38). [1] The purpose of the present article will be to call attention to a piece of evidence which none of these scholars mentions, but which provides dramatic confirmation of the hypothesis that the tearing of the heavens and the tearing of the temple veil were linked in Mark's imagination. [2]
To begin with, we should note that the two occurrences of the motif of tearing in Mark do not occur at random points in the narrative, but on the contrary are located at two pivotal moments in the story moments which, moreover, provide an ideal counterpoint for each other: namely, the precise beginning (the baptism) and the precise end (the death) of the earthly career of Jesus. This significant placement of the two instances of the motif of tearing suggests that we are dealing here with a symbolic "inclusio": that is, the narrative device common in biblical texts in which a detail is repeated at the beginning and the end of a narrative unit in order to "bracket off" the unit and give it a sense of closure and structural integrity.

Bunker Busters: Washington's Drive
for New Nuclear Weapons
By Mark Bromley and David Grahame Already strained on a range of issues, the transatlantic relationship will be further tested by a budget request currently moving through Congress. Washington is considering allocating money for the development of new, more useable nuclear weapons to use against hardened and deeply buried targets (HDBTs). This could dramatically lower the threshold for nuclear use and threaten the nuclear testing moratorium.
Nuclear Posture Review (NPR)
was leaked to the press. The Review, the first of its kind since 1994, sparked strong responses from U.S. opponents and from many quarters in Europe as well. In particular, its request for contingency plans to be drawn up for the use of nuclear weapons against Iraq, North Korea, Iran, Libya, Syria, Russia and China was seen by some as another example of a hyperpower giddy with its own supremacy.
. An October 2001 Pentagon report estimates over 10,000 HDBTs exist worldwide, and while only a tiny proportion are of strategic significance, it anticipates a significant increase in that number in the coming decade.

Letter from David Wellstone and Mark Wellstone on the formation of Wellstone Action
Not long after our parents' tragic death in the final days of their last campaign, my brother David and I sat down here in the Twin Cities with a number of our folks closest friends and most steadfast supporters over the years. We all agreed that we bore a shared responsibility to carry on their work to advance social progress and economic justice. Thus Wellstone Action was born. Paul and Sheila Wellstone can never be replaced. But others can be taught to walk in their footsteps. That's the first order of business for Wellstone Action. During three campaigns for the United States Senate and a Presidential exploratory campaign, my parents and the loyal core of volunteers and professionals who worked closely with them developed unmatched political organizing skills. In the last campaign, 20,000 volunteers took part in one of the best organized and most broad-based grassroots campaigns in U.S. history. Many of those volunteers were trained at "Camp Wellstone," where seasoned organizers taught them how progressives can win elections. Our aim is nothing less than to jump-start a new generation of professional organizers and grassroots leaders who will run for office themselves.

Jan Mark would have been born in London during the Second World War, but the maternity hospital had been evacuated to Hertfordshire for the duration. She remained there for a full nine days, prelude to an unsettled childhood spent moving around Southern England before moving with her husband and children to Norfolk. She has now lived in Oxford longer than anywhere else. This rootlessness turned out to be a good thing as most of her books are set in places where she has lived or worked, either lightly disguised or else meticulously faithful to the local geography. Having begun as an Art teacher Jan has maintained an interest in education, working in schools, colleges and on residential courses. Two years as Writer in Residence at Oxford Polytechnic also provided experience in teacher training. Writing is the day job, however. Jan is an astute writer of fiction for all ages. She has won the Carnegie Medal twice, for THUNDER AND LIGHTNINGS and HANDLES; the Angel Literary Award for FEET AND OTHER STORIES and ZENO WAS HERE, and the Rank/Observer Prize for AQUARIUS. THUNDER AND LIGHTNINGS also won the Penguin Guardian Award for a first children's book. Forthcoming are novels for teenagers and a young adult novel, INGLISH, for David Fickling Books.
