Click the photo for a larger version Welcome Note from Webmaster Val: EXTRA! EXTRA! LET ME SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS! Dorothy Dandridge's long out of print and notoriously difficult to find autobiography, " Everything and Nothing: The Dorothy Dandridge Tragedy " has been re-released and is back in print ! (Although I must mention that the subtitle used to be "The Dorothy Dandridge Story ," which I guess just wasn't "dramatic" enough and I'll bet if Dorothy were still alive, she wouldn't be happy about the change one little bit and she'd tell these publishers where they could stick their "tragedy"! But I digress...) Anyway :>, if you've only read the other two biographies, I implore you to read Dorothy's own work, co-written with Earl Conrad. Also, keep in mind that it's this book that Janet Jackson holds the film rights to, so if Janet decides to star in her own cinematic version of Dorothy's story, it would be adapted from this work. See my reviews of various Dorothy Dandridge books below!

DOROTHY DANDRIDGE
submitted by: Devin M. With the release of "Carmen Jones" in 1954, Dorothy Dandridge became Hollywood's "sepia sex symbol." Even so, she was never accepted as a true leading lady. Now 32 years after her death, movieland is abuzz with talk of bringing Dandridge's tragic life story to film. And the question on everybody's lips is, 'who will be the actress to star in Dorothy's tortured tale?' Dandridge's said life story is detailed in film historian Donald Bogle's book, "Dorothy Dandridge: A Biography" from Amistad Press. Among the revelations in the biography are Dandridge's indifferent mother Ruby was a lesbian, who after leaving Dandridge's father, allowed her female lover to raise her daughters. "The woman moved into the home with Ruby and the children," Bogle said. "The children were told to call the woman Auntie MaMa. She was a very cruel woman. A strict disciplinarian. She beat the girls. It really was physical abuse." The bio also details Dandridge's insecurities stemming from her abusive childhood, her terrible marriage to womanizing tap dancer Harold Nicholas, and the birth of their brain-damaged daughter Lynn.

Dandridge's mother was an entertainer and comedic actress who, after settling in Los Angeles, had some success in radio and, later, television. The young Dorothy and her sister Vivian began performing publicly as children and in the 1930s joined a third (unrelated) girl as the "Dandridge Sisters," singing and dancing. In the 1940s and early '50s Dorothy secured a few bit roles in films and developed a highly successful career as a solo nightclub singer, eventually appearing in such prestigious clubs as the Waldorf Astoria's Empire Room in New York City. Dandridge then won the title role in Otto Preminger's all-black Carmen Jones (1954), earning her an Oscar nomination. (She did not sing in Carmen Jones, however; the singing was dubbed by mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne.) Her father was a minister and her mother was an aspiring actor. She began her career as a singer in 1951, performing at the Cotton Club in New York with the Dandridge Sisters and as a soloist with the Desi Arnaz Band. As a child, Dandridge appeared in bit parts in several films. She moved quickly from playing small roles in films such as Flamingo (1947) to lead roles in a number of low-budget films, including Tarzan's Perils The Harlem Globetrotters (1951), and Jungle Queen (1951). Her breakthrough role was Carmen Jones (1954), for which she became the first black woman to receive an Academy Award nomination for best actress. Her next film, Island in the Sun (1957), was the first mainstream film to portray an interracial romance, but it was not received as well. In 1959 she regained critical recognition for her role as Bess in

Welcome to Valsadie.com! My name is Valerie and this is my site, Valsadie.com.
Why "valsadie"?
The "valsadie" name came about back in 1995. I was signing up with AOL and needed a user ID, and AOL wouldn't accept any of the variations I came up with mixing my first, middle, and last names (back in the "dark ages" when AOL user IDs could only be a maximum of 10 places long). My friend Sadie was over, looking over my new computer with me, and, at wit's end, I took my name, stuck her name at the end of it, and typed it in. And AOL took it! At the time, my intention had been to change this user ID later, and not really be known by the obviously-made-up name of "valsadie." But, as procrastination seems to be beyond my psychology and a part of my very biology, I didn't get around to it. And so it stayed. And so it stuck. And so here we are :>! Valsadie Site Guide!

Wendi Williams lends voice to 'Introducing Dorothy Dandridge'

In this story:
Music to her ears Pretty ugly RELATED STORIES, SITES (CNN) When HBO's heavily promoted biopic "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" has its Saturday night debut, the title character's face will be that of actress Halle Berry. But her voice belongs to Los Angeles singer Wendi Williams. Early reviews of the film say Berry shines in her work as the doomed Hollywood star. Dandridge was the first African-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award that was in 1955, for her work in "Carmen Jones" with Harry Belafonte. Dandridge was a woman who defied Hollywood stereotypes, but was ultimately unable to overcome the racial discrimination she faced. She died in 1965 of a prescription drug overdose, at age 42. Before she cemented her place in record books with her Oscar nomination, Dandridge rose to fame as a nightclub singer. And when it came time to resurrect her old songs for both the HBO film and its soundtrack, it's Williams who performed the vocal tour of duty.
