The suspect is a smartly-dressed man in his thirties or forties with dark hair, a Barbour-style jacket over a blue suit who used a mobile phone. But despite unprecedented publicity and hundreds of calls resulting from Crimewatch appeals, the white, middle-aged murderer the Met police have searched for around the world remains frustratingly elusive. In many ways it should not be a difficult case to crack. A TV celebrity is shot in broad daylight in the middle of a busy west London street by a man seen hanging around by a dozen witnesses up to two days beforehand. Within a week the police have produced an artist's impression of the prime suspect. The police e-fit of the suspect The senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell, also has valuable forensic clues to base his inquiry on such as the bullet itself - which unusually had been tampered with, possibly to reduce the noise of the shot. The evidence points to someone with a good knowledge in firearms who has used a gun with a hollowed-out barrel to carry out a carefully planned assassination.

George Knights, 41, from Feltham in west London, was arrested two days after the BBC TV presenter was shot dead outside her Fulham home on 26 April. His arrest followed a 40-minute car chase, during which police and pedestrians came under fire, and a four-hour siege outside his home. On Wednesday Mr Knights appeared at a pre-trial hearing at the Old Bailey, facing charges including attempted murder, possessing explosives and several firearm charges. He asked the Recorder of London, Judge Michael Hyam, if he could speak to one of the detectives involved in his case. "It is to do with the Dando inquiry," he said. "It is completely separate." Mr Knights was defending himself having sacked his defence team. However, he said he intended to hire another firm of solicitors. The hearing was adjourned until 10 September.

The Sunday Mirror newspaper says detectives are investigating whether the blonde-haired person seen in Gowan Avenue, where Ms Dando was shot, could have been a woman in a man's suit. Police have never been able to say for certain that the person who killed her was male. The newspaper says a source close to the investigation has confirmed that following a review of the case, "the murder squad are taking the possibility of a female killer seriously". Ms Dando was killed on 26 April outside her house in Fulham, west London. At 1040 BST that morning, window cleaner Alan Taylor, who was working nearby, saw a person with light coloured hair, smartly dressed in a light grey two-piece suit talking into a mobile phone.
