The range is rather varied and contains both the hopelessly miscast and the memorable. Peter Cushing falls in with the latter group. Never before or since, has Holmes been portrayed by a more gentle or respected actor. Known in the industry for his remarkable ability with props and his professionalism in the worst of circumstances, Peter Cushing was an actor's actor. In his personal life he was, by all accounts, a very private man and devoted husband to his beloved wife Helen. Amongst his hobbies was the creation of minature theatrical sets, as well as the collecting of model soldiers,and of course he had a deep love of books. I like to think that Conan Doyle would have embraced Peter Cushing as something of a kindred spirit! In Sherlockian film sequence, Cushing follows on the heels of Rathbone, whereas in the medium that is television he follows Douglas Wilmer. In both places he does rather well. In neither case is he the perfect Holmes, but one we can enjoy and appreciate nonetheless. His amazing professionalism has always made Cushing a joy to behold in any of his varied roles. Although indelibly linked with Hammer Films in the sixties, Peter Cushing appeared in a total of 91 films and made numerous television appearances.

From his beginnings in the genre in the late 1950s until his declining years, Cushing, popular with both the fans and the critics, was the actor who best exemplified the English, gothic side of s.f., though his career extended far beyond the field. This is a tribute, not a biography. Cushing's many works are organized into (I hope) logical and useful groups originating from this page, a gateway into the long career of horror's favorite gentleman. But first things first. He began in British Theater before making a name for himself in Hollywood with such films as 'The Man in The Iron Mask' and 'A Chump at Oxford'. His grandfather traveled with Sir Henry Irving on tours of the US and Canada, his aunt worked with actress Gertie Miller and his step-uncle Wilton Herriot was a well-known actor (played a principal in 'Charley's Aunt'. In Kenley Cushing was educated at Shoreham Grammar School and Purley County Secondary School where he enjoyed painting, rugger (rugby), and amateur theatricals. His first encounter with the stage was at eleven. He and his brother ran a puppet show for friends and family. His uncle advised they not charge admission, afraid they would lose their audience. After the performance, though, Cushing's brother stood at the door with an upturned hat and charged 3 pence to leave the room. Grand Moff Tarkin Conceptual Presentation Photo: Not only was the idea of a Bantha toy kicked around at Kenner during the waning days of their Star Wars product line, that of a Grand Moff Tarkin figureeveryone's choice as the winner of the "gee-I-wish-they-had-made-that-figure" pageantapparently was as well. Unfortunately, no concept art or three-dimensional figure prototypes have surfaced. Rather, we are left with this presentation piececonsisting simply of what appears to be a mounted photo of Peter Cushing, and the hand-printed title "Grand Moff Tarkin"as one of the very few pieces of evidence that the figure may have indeed been considered for a post- POTF release.
