By Steve Burgess S ir Thomas Crapper did not really invent the flush toilet. The word "gringo" was not inspired by the American troops who sang "Green grow the grasses-o," during the Mexican-American War the word was in use 100 years previously. Still, those popular misconceptions and countless others survive through constant repetition, and someday they will be joined by new linguistic fables even now being born. Here's a likely candidate years from now it will be widely circulated that the word "crummy" derives from the work of cartoonist Robert Crumb, a world-class malcontent of the late 20th century. Crumb surveyed the urban landscape of his era and pronounced his verdict: Everything sucks big time, including humanity and, most especially, Robert Crumb. "At least I hate myself as much as I hate anybody else," Crumb once said. Coming from the author of "Self-Loathing Comics,"

A crumb CHRONOLOGY. August 30, 1943 robert crumb is born in Philadelphia, the third of five children to career Marine Charles crumb, Sr.
    http://www.sonyclassics.com/crumb/misc/about.html
ROBERT CRUMB Crumb's art is born of the tradition of social commentators like George Grosz, Otto Dix and Max Beckman, and of the English caricaturists, George Cruikshank and James Gillray. Looking at his drawings , one immediately recognizes his awesome technical skill, a facility that New Yorker art critic Adam Gopnik describes as "virtuosic, the evolution of an out-of-date grotesque style into a realist style that registers the banal, the ordinary, the unconsciously humorous day to day stuff that fills our lives." Crumb's published output since 1967 has been voluminous and the circulation of that work continues to grow. There are estimated to be over two million copies of Zap Comix alone, in print. The breadth of his work encompasses the familiar coterie of characters from Mr. Natural to Mode O'Day, but he has also toured 17th Century London in Boswell's London Journal based on James Boswell's classic literary work; done a scholarly exposition on sexual deviance in Psychopathia Sexualis, and debated the Buddhist philosophy of detachment in Those Cute, Adorable Little Bearzy Wearzys. Still insecure about a technical style that is universally praised by critics, Crumb remarks: "I go through long periods of agonizing over what I'm doing. I've never been a facile draftsman I always have to struggle to figure out how to draw things."

"R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders" (CSS) are a loosely organized string band playing songs from the 1920s and (occasionally) modern songs styled after the songs of the 20s. They recorded three albums in the 70s and occasionally are active today, though usually without Mr. Crumb who lives in France.

    Art Spiegelman

    Interviewed by Gary Groth,
excerpted from The Comics Journal In this excerpt of his massive, definitive interview, Art Spiegelman sandwiches a discussion of his work for The New Yorker with two interesting and remarkably different critiques of famous artists: Jack Kirby and Robert Crumb. Spiegelman's discussion of Crumb is important, as it brings to light in a thoughtful manner the "racism critique" of some of Crumb's work. Spiegelman's thoughts on Kirby were a surprise especially to interviewer Gary Groth, who never would have guessed that he and Spiegelman could have talked for so long and so interestingly about an artist for whom Spiegelman holds little passion. Spiegelman on Kirby GARY GROTH: Where does Kirby reside in your pantheon? ART SPIEGELMAN: GROTH: Which brings us back to the tension between form and content. With his romance comics, the dynamism in the kisses... SPIEGELMAN: [laughs] Right, there's a tension there that I appreciate. I like it, I just don't have a strong affinity for it. It probably has something to do with not having much interest in superheroic, mythic fantasy. GROTH: That's what I was getting at earlier when I asked you if you could respect something but not like it.

    Columbia. Robert Miller, piano.
I love Miller's performance of these crazy piano works. He is extremely animated and theatrical amidst the formidable obstacle course that the performer faces in this work. He is called to strum the strings inside the piano, scream, whoop and holler, preparing the strings, etc. In the 4th cut on side 1, the performer is instructed: "serene, desireless, like a Nirvana-trance!" O.K. Miller makes it work. it's really fantastic. I have become quite attached to these performances to the exclusion of all others. (LP)

Crumb's acidic little characters and the gleanings of Mr. Natural. These are completely ripped off comix and biographies of R. Crumb R. Crumb on the right Robert Crumb is a cartoonist with instantly recognizable style whose ability to create memorable, shocking images is unsurpassed. A nonaligned political crank. A painfully honest autobiographer. A sexual neurotic. He's all this and more. A social cull as a kid, Crumb spent endless hours drawing. The sensitive nerd was inspired by Harvey Kurtzman's Mad and Humbug, and eventually worked with Kurtzman in Help!. Crumb went to Cleveland in the early '60s and got work at a greeting card company, where he perfected his cute bigfoot style. And then he dropped acid and he and the comic's medium underwent petamorphosis. In 1967, Zap #0 burst upon a moribund comic's scene and started underground comix. 25 years later, after fame and fortune, deification and vilification, Crumb is still at it, still putting little lines on paper. He says it's no big deal to him, but to us, ah yes, it's a very big deal indeed. A six-panel page in Zap #1 that caused Crumb a lot of trouble, Keep On Truckin struck a note in the collective hip unconscious. For a while, Keep On Truckin was everywhere. The characters and their odd mode of ambulating were made into merchandise, mostly without permission. In the early '70s, Crumb's lawyer threatened suits against anyone who had swiped Crumb's work or ideas. Thousands of dollars rolled in. Then in 1976 a judge ruled that Crumb didn't own KOT and suddenly the IRS, for the taxes they said he owed on past royalties, was pursuing him. Crumb didn't dig himself out of that hole for years.
