Robert Crumb
Robert Crumb was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 30, 1943. Though he never studied art nor had any formal teaching, he began drawing at an early age. While still in his early teens, he and his brother drew single issue comics for fun. Among these was "Fritz the Cat" which Robert would later draw for Harvey Kurtzman's "Help" magazine. In 1962, Crumb's family moved to Cleveland and Robert went to work for the American Greeting Card Company. He married his first wife, Dana, in 1964 and began doing work for other entities, including the aforementioned Help magazine, where he worked with/for one his greatest influences, comic artists and Mad co-creator Harvey Kurtzman. Many artists who later became part of the Underground Comic Counter-Culture with Crumb also worked at Help. Also during this period, Crumb began to experiment with drugs, resulting in some bad experiences with LSD, but these "bad trips" only led to Robert creating some of his most enduring characters, including the pop icon< "Mr.Natural". During this time he was doing illustrations and strips for New York's "East Village Other", a Greenwich Village newspaper. He moved to San Francisco in 1966 and almost immediately began interaction with many other blossoming artists including Rick Griffin, Spain Rodriguez, S.Clay Wilson and Victor Moscoso. It was not long before their creative minds were tapped by San Franciscan's Don Donahoe and Charles Plymell and "Zap Comix" #0 was published in 1967. A smash hit, Crumb and the other artists became overnight sensations.

Robert Crumb
(b. 30/08/1943, USA)
Robert Crumb was born in Philadelphia in 1943. As a kid, he started drawing homemade comic books, together with his brother Charles, for the amusement of himself and his family. One of the characters he invented then was Fred the Cat, after the family's pet. Fred eventually became Fritz the Cat, one of Crumb's best-known characters. Crumb left home in 1962, getting a job as a greeting card artist in Cleveland, Ohio. At the same time, he continued his comics, sending one to the public gallery section of Harvey Kurtzman 's Help! Magazine. Encouraged by Kurtzman, Crumb moved to New York to work for Help! Unfortunately, this magazine folded just after Crumb returned from an eight-month stay in Europe. Crumb stayed in New York for a while, making comics trading cards for Topps Gum among other things, and then returned to Cleveland. In January 1967, Crumb moved to California, where he did some comics for a magazine called Yarrowstalks. His work was so well received they asked him to do a whole comic book, and soon the first issue of Zap was ready. The publisher however disappeared with all of the original artwork. Crumb, who had not only saved xeroxes of his work, but was already halfway with the next issue of Zap, found Don Donahue and Charles Plymell willing to publish it. So it is that the material for the second Zap comic was published as Zap #1, after which the older material for the first issue was printed as Zap #0. All of these have become collector's items.

Robert Crumb
Robert Crumb (who signs his work as " R. Crumb ") is an artist, born on August 30th , whose entire adult life has been dedicated to drawing comic strips and comic books . He never joined the mainstream comic book publishing industry; since the , he has been one of the founders and major participants in the field of underground comics As the flower power movement of the was getting into full swing, Crumb came to San Francisco and found a number of other artists who were interested in publishing small-press, independent comic books aimed at the audiences of the day. Along with such artists as Spain Rodriguez and Gilbert Shelton, Crumb published the first issue of Zap Comix in . The comic series took the psychedelic counter-culture movement by storm, giving rise to a series of rebellious, adult-oriented comic books that found an audience with the hippies , rebels, and rock-and-roll crowd who didn't want anything to do with the mainstream superhero comic books of such publishing houses as DC and Marvel . Crumb, however, claims disaffection with the flower power movement, saying that he just wanted to "get in on some of that free love."

Robert Crumb

obert Crumb was born in 1943 in Philadelphia. After a period drawing greeting cards, he began to work with MAD creator Harvey Kurtzman on his new humor magazine, Help! After Help! folded, Crumb heard the siren song of the Summer of Love and moved to San Francisco in 1967. He began drawing LSD-influenced comics for various underground newspapers, including The East Village Other and Yarrowstalks. In 1968, the first issue of Zap Comix was published and Crumb hawked copies from a baby carriage in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Zap Comix was a success and attracted the attention of other artists, including S. Clay Wilson, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin, all of whom joined Zap with issue 2. Crumb's comics mixed a nostalgia for comics' rich history with a psychedelic exuberance. Crumb produced many more comics in the late sixties and early seventies, including Despair, Motor City, Big Ass Comics, Home Grown Funnies, People's Comix, and Your Hytone Comics, as well as the books Head Comix and Fritz the Cat. Pursued by hustling businessmen who wanted to merchandise his characters Mr. Natural and Fritz the Cat, Crumb retreated to rural California. In 1981, Crumb started Weirdo, a new anthology magazine featuring his own new work, the comics of a new generation of young cartoonists, and intriguingly strange work by certifiable "outsider" cartoonists. At the same time, Crumb drew several issues of a new solo comic book, Hup.

There's no little irony in the fact that anyone who bought a bundle of Robert Crumb's early underground comix work and preserved it from the ravages of time and censors could buy a house or put their children through the most expensive colleges by selling vintage original Crumb on the collectibles market today. People who loved Crumb in the late 1960s and early 1970s when underground comix were in their full flower couldn't get enough of his work. People who were repelled by his uniquely outsized visions of sex and society could only shake their heads and wonder what the world was coming to. But even the people who thought Crumb was cool when his underground work appeared in Zap Comix probably never imagined any of his comix appearances would be worth hundreds of dollars 30 years later. Such are the ironies of capitalism and the free market. In his most recent catalog, longtime comics historian/retailer Robert Beerbohm who was a big part of the underground scene himself offered a fine copy of the first edition of Zap Comix #0 for $800. That's the Zap printed on a hand-fed press in 1968 with a print run of 5,000 copies, many of them peddled in head shops or by Crumb himself on the streets of San Francisco.
