Defining a 'Tradition' in Interactive Music Performance David Rodger
musdr@lure.latrobe.edu.au
David Rodger's home page
Introduction
Can interactive music and art works fit into a taxonomy of style and content such that the term 'tradition' is meaningful in discussions about their performance? To what extent do such works proceed from a received performance practice? Contemporary musicology is, more and more, embracing the assessment of current musical practices, including those of popular music forms. But electronic music technology has received less attention, perhaps because there has been a tendency to treat technology and its associated practices more as a cultural manifestation-technology as fetish-than as a mode of production requiring its own "codes of performance". The fledgling field of 'cyberart' seems in particular to have suffered. It seems as if we have not gotten over the "gee-whiz"-ness of it all! In such works, there may be no score (other than custom software) and there may appear to be no performer as an embodied presence. In addition, recent technologies allow the artist to extend the capabilities of the instrumental object through remote control, or to dispense with the object altogether. I see three main problems associated with classifying electronic performing arts. The first is that the actuating technology which captures physical gesture as a control signal may be uncommonly used in musical applications. Secondly, the way that signal is used is often specific to the work. Finally, interactive systems depart from well-established organological schemata, such as the Hornbostel-Sachs system. Bakan et.al. (1990) have attempted to extend this classification to include electronic music instruments, but they are mainly concerned with those modelled on traditional instruments like keyboards and woodwind mechanisms or with 'music processors' which record, reproduce and manipulate data. So it becomes more difficult to place the work in any 'tradition' of performance practice or instrument design than it is to situate a Mozart string quartet into a tradition of chamber music or a survey of string instrument techniques.

Their area of operation is an intriguing blend of instrumental progressive rock with fairly laid back Jazz-fusion and a splash or two of world music influences for good measure. The main stylistic pointers would be King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Dixie Dregs but Ozone Quartet comfortably asserts their own identity on this recording. They are never as jazzy as Mahavishnu, nor are they quite as self-indulgent when it comes to solos. The tune remains the king here, though the players are not without the chops when it comes to ability.
I have not heard either of the studio releases, nor have I seen the band live, (there is the small matter of a very large ocean acting as a barrier to this) but received wisdom says that the band is at their best in live performance. This disc supports that assertion in spectacular fashion.
This is a very even disc with no real standouts, and certainly no substandard cuts, but I have picked out a few tracks to give a flavour of what is on offer :

www.holycrossband.com Shred: Production: Vibe: Songwriting: Holy Cross is by their own definition a "Christian Prog-Rock Band" which intrigued me when I first read about them on a Kansas (the band) newsgroup, I was also intrigued by their collaboration with former Kansas violinist David Ragsdale, an amazing musician. When I finally listened to Small World ~ Big God , Holy Cross' latest release, I immediately heard the potential this music has. The opener "Glory" features some serious jammin' and a Kansas-like vibe led by Ragsdale's rippin' violin. Other highlights include the melodic "Prelusion Escape" and the dark, Alice In Chains sounding "Even Angels Fall." Main songwriter and keyboardist Bert Chancellor shows flashes of greatness as his songs have a great sense of melody. Musically, the band is tight and rockin', and even though I wouldn't call them flat out shred, these guys can play their instruments. The vocals, on the other hand, need some work as they sometimes come off a bit flat and off-key. That being said, I attest some of the vocal woes to the recording process that many indie bands have to endure, which consists of extremely limited studio time, lack of a producer and having to record, produce, and mix the music themselves and in a hurry. Don't let this steer you away from the band, though, as they do have definite potential.

Caroline and David MacLeod October 11. 2003 Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Dave and I were married on October 11th, 2003, at the Grand Mira Church, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Dave is of Scottish ancestry but wasn't born in Scotland, he was born in Marion Bridge Nova Scotia. The Scottish heritage is still very strong in his family as his grandmother speaks Gaelic. I am French Canadian and was born in Quebec city. As far as I can go back, my family has been in Quebec since the first French settlers.
Dave wore the traditional Modern MacLeod Tartan with MacLeod kilt pin and brooch to hold the matching plaid draped on his shoulder. The male attendants wore the Flower of Scotland Tartan. My dress was designed by a local designer originally from Estonia, it was a simple but yet elegant white dress. Rings by Walker Metalsmiths. My bouquet was made up of 4 dozens tightly packed red black roses. Dave had one of my roses in his boutonniere with two thistles. We had beautiful traditional Scottish music during the Catholic Church service with a live pianist and violinist. Outside the Church we had a live piper who played as our guests arrived and piped the wedding party in and the bride and groom out. Our furry 11 years old daughter also attended, her name is Chinook and she is a Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute cross.

Increasingly it needed improvisation to stay alive: this was its life blood. But that didn't show much in the studio albums. In concert, it stepped sideways and jumped. It went places where other musicians of that rock generation mainly avoided. This team looked into the darker spaces of the psyche and reported back on what it found. The 1969 Crimscapes were bleak and written; the 1973/4 Crimscapes were darker, and mainly improvised.

US born filmmaker and performance artist David Leister came to live in London in 1979. In 1984 he joined the London FilmMakers Coop. Leister has been collecting 'found' footage since he was 15. His archive comprises some 600 films, particularly 16mm educational and industrial training films dating back to the 1940's, which now have a kitsch/utilitarian aesthetic. Of course often these films are low-budget productions and share a certain 'production value' based empathy with underground productions so there is a sympathetic affection alongside the laughter at bygone cultural mannerisms. He had shown some of these, 'for laughs', at the Comedy Store in 1984, for which he would splice up a 20 minute compilation reel. Around the same time he showed similar material at Tony Allen's club 'Hecklers Graveyard', and at a similar cabaret/ comedy show at the Notting Hill Tabernacle. The comic potential of these types of films has since become part of British mainstream comedy vocabulary being used by Simon Day and David Baddiel, parodied by Harry Enfield and most recently by Harry Hill with whom Leister has in fact recently been working. The first of his own shows was around this time (c1984) at an early Klinker or Cooler club. (An experimental music venue which is still running weekly events in The Sussex Pub London N1). He then started the 'Armchair Cinema' which ran three or four evenings in the basement of a restaurant called The Dining Room in Borough Market near London Bridge. This was run by the filmmaker William English and his partner Sandra. These shows were based on showings of the archive fortified with extracts of work by classic experimental filmmakers such as Joseph Cornell and Rene Clair.

King Crimson - "The Talking Drums" (Recorded Live at Zoom Club, Frankfurt Germany 10/13/72, Double Bootleg CD, Unknown Origin, Purchased in Philadelphia July 2001) From Aural Innovations #18 (January 2002) Yes, this is the real stuff for me, my favorite version of KC in full-flight, first show of the first tour of the mid-seventies era of Fripp's music, and one of the most important Progressive Rock bootlegs offered to the interested music fan or student of the genre. THIS IS A BOOTLEG, so the sound quality is slightly noisy, but gets better as the show progresses. It sounds like it was mastered from cassette, but the source seems to have come from the soundboard Reel to Reel tape. And it was fuckin' expensive at $25.00 per disc, yet cheaper in Philadelphia than NYC. The set opens with Jaime Muir's percussive styling on Bells introducing "Lark's Tongues In Aspic Part 1", which unfolds its unlikely combination of 70s Miles Funk, Olivier Messiaen and Indonesian Gamelan at breakneck speed and with great precision. The tune works through a number of motifs, featuring the chattering interplay of these two stellar percussionists. After Fripp's introduction to the audience, a very free Jam occurs, with a huge BassGuitar sound from Wetton, an extremely intense solo from Fripp and fire from Cross' violin. The exchanges between Bruford and Muir are quite amazing as they work the jam by providing a multi-hued rhythmic barrage. After the fire, the jam segues into an early version of "Book of Saturdays", which is sung beautifully by Wetton, and gives Fripp a chance to play a heart-breaking solo. This version of the tune sports un-revised lyrics by David Palmer-James, but progresses right into yet another improvisation. Throughout the ensemble plays with great sensitivity, and maintains a very high degree of interaction.

The Orange County Community College Summer Orchestra will hold its fourth annual concert on the Alumni Green on Saturday, July 12th, at 6 p.m. (In case of rain, the concert will be held in the College Commons.) The orchestra will perform a light classics program in a casual setting featuring Broadway tunes, Bizet's Carmen Suite, and even the Lord of the Rings Symphonic Suite.
The Summer Orchestra in concert The informal atmosphere and lavish nearby greenhouse gardens make it a fun evening for families, says conductor Hilarie Clark Moore. "It's a good place to introduce kids to classical music. Typically, people bring a picnic dinner or snacks," she says. Previous concerts have drawn, on the average, approximately 200 attendees. Begun five years ago, the orchestra consists of a wide variety of community and campus members: lawyers, scientists and stay-at-home moms, as well as students and semi-professional musicians all participate. "We even have a few junior high school students who play," says Moore. "If they're talented enough, they can join. I once had an 89-year-old sitting next to a 10-year-old."
