Shem interview, August 12th, 2001 By Kenneth Bremer.
All these words are from independent people at the webstore cdbaby.com. There is no doubt that Shem has done a terrific album. After touring with a lot of west coast music artists, Shem did get the time to record and release his first album "Son of Arthur. Here is an interview with Shem, where he is telling about the new album and more. - First of all congratulations on the release of your new album. Is the title "Son of Arthur" related to your father Artie Schroeck? Thank you. Yes. I called it that because of two things. First, I am a son of Arthur and my father has been a huge musical influence on my life. Secondly, I don't use a last name so seeing as my name is one from the Old Testament, I thought I'd identify myself like they did back then. For example: Solomon, son of David. - "Son of Arthur" is a very clever album. In my opinion it is an album that shows your talents as a musician and songwriter. It took a lot of years to be released. Was it because of all your touring with different bands or were the songs a long way to come? Yes I have been busy touring but that wasn't the reason for the long wait. When I spoke to you guys in Paris back in 1997, I had mentioned that I planned on recording a CD soon. But at that time I hadn't felt comfortable with material and an over all motif for a record. With the birth of now playing acoustic guitar, which was something I hadn't really tackled yet when I saw you last, I started writing the songs you now hear on "Son Of Arthur." The only song that had been written back in '97 was "Born To Take the Fall" and it was very piano oriented at the time. The over all recording process started in July of 1999 and was completed in April of this year. So while you guys thought I took forever to record this record, it really was only about a 2 year process.

He then assembled a few members of Gong (Steve Hillage, Tim Blake, Didier Malherbe) and some old friends (Christian Boule`, Gilbert Artman) to record the Clearlight Symphony (Virgin, 1975), released under the moniker Clearlight. This lush electronic and symphonic work was one of first to continue the mission of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece and Tonto's Expanding Head Band Forever Blowing Bubbles (1975), performed by a broader ensemble, was a more conventional collection of songs heavily influenced by the presence of King Crimson's violinist David Cross and by guitarist and flutist Jean Claude d'Agostini. The instrumentals ( Without Words Way Ergotrip Et Pendant Ce Temps La ) are almost as good as the previous symphony. This stylistic variation was parallel to a deeper variation of “philosophic” nature: from the old lyrics marked out with chivalry tales suited for the hippy philosophy “ with a smile we can save the world ”, to a more concrete lyrics but the same universal meaning, consequence of a bigger awareness as regards to the past. But also the stylistic variation in itself is sign of Fripp’s thought in accordance with which the universal range of music is such that, when the artist has discovered the sacredness of his own art – independently from the more easily legible elements (as the above-mentioned lyrics, or an explicit political alliance) and the image of the artist painted by the Rock industry – it can really change the state of things, without being for this traced back to stereotypes like which imposed from hippy movement.
But the strength of this record is the fact that the revolution is not shouted or manifest like for instance Zappa’s one, neither the carrying column of the record, but it’s subtly concealed, being good at not renouncing to express itself with enjoyable melodies or cliché used by the old King Crimson. From this spirit was born melancholic ballads like “Book of Saturday”, wonderful jewel of 3 minutes, or the long “Exiles”, where the lyricism of the whole band shines, they are pure demonstrations of how the apparent simplicity, the great evocative power, the catchiness, and the concreteness of the lyrics are able to make to coexist the great revolutionary lift. More explicit is the exotic “Easy Money” where its own innovative strength is at the top during Fripp’s solo, who shares the solo part with Jamie Muir’s inventive percussions and the winning background of Bill Bruford’s drums.

From: Gary Davis Subject: Re: Rock Violinists
He should definitely check out former King Crimson violinist, David Cross. Ironically when he was in Crimson he was eventually let go because the sound of his violin couldn't compete with the increasingly heavy sound of Crimson. Personally I think part of the problem was the available technology of the time. After Crimson Cross went on to do some session work, most notably on Clearlight's Forever Blowing Bubbles . But for the most part kind of disappeared from the recording scene. But several years ago he got back into it and has released a number of solo albums. And although he might have been responsible for the more acoustic side of Crimson when he was in it, his solo albums are nothing short of ferocious!!! I think any fan of that period of Crimson would really love these releases. I've got them at Here are some soundbites to check out: [www.e-prog.net]
