Crawford, Joan Crawford, Joan (1908-1977), American motion-picture actor, known for her hard-edged glamour and her taut portrayals of strong-willed women determined to control their fate. Born Lucille LeSueur in San Antonio, Texas, she began her career as a dancer, first on the stage and later in silent films. Her first starring role as an actor was in Our Dancing Daughters (1928), quickly followed by two similarly titled pictures, Our Modern Maidens (1929) and Our Blushing Brides (1930). During the early, starlet stage of her career—particularly in her silent films—Crawford was cast in flamboyant roles that made her the very embodiment of Jazz Age sexuality. Soon, however, as her popularity mounted, she became a star for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios, playing romantic leads opposite major performers such as Gary Cooper, Franchot Tone, Robert Taylor, William Powell, Spencer Tracy, and (repeatedly) Clark Gable. Memorable films of these years include Dance, Fools, Dance

Modern audiences know Joan Crawford mostly from her later roles, in which she often played unglamourous or unsympathetic characters, or from what she freely admitted were some bad films, done out of boredom or for the money, or both. Like Bette Davis, her features did not exactly soften as she aged, and the release of a nasty biography and a popular biopic after her death didn't help matters, either. Her earlier films, which display her youthful beauty, are either lost or not being shown, further contributing to the fact that polls of least favorite actresses often feature Joan near the top. Most of her biographies are out of print or otherwise unavailable.
But the fact is that Joan Crawford was a star at MGM almost from the beginning, and continued to be a star for many decades, perfecting her persona as the working-class girl who broke into the ranks of the rich. It was a role that was particularly appealing to people during the Depression and war years. Recently she was voted #10 by the American Film Institute on their list of the greatest actresses of the first half of the century. She was nominated three times for Best Actress Oscars in the late 40s and early 50s, winning once, for

"I had always known what I wanted, and that was beauty...in every form...a beautiful house, beautiful man, a beautiful life and image. I was ambitious to get the money which would attain all that for me."
Joan Crawford
THE ULTIMATE MOVIE STAR
JOAN CRAWFORD WAS A TRUE CINDERELLA STORY, THE LITTLE KID FROM NOWHERE WHO MADE IT TO THE TOP THE HARD WAY, BY HER OWN TALENT AND EFFORT. MOST OF HER LIFE SHE HAD KNOWN WHAT SHE WANTED AND REFUSED TO BE DISCOURAGED, EVEN WHEN THE GOAL SEEMED IMPOSSIBLY REMOTE. AND FINALLY ACHIEVING STARDOM, FEW CARRIED THEIR GLAMOROUS CROWN SO HIGH AND PROUD, SO REGALLY, AS JOAN CRAWFORD.
Joan Crawford 1904-1977 Joan Crawford was the ultimate movie star. One of the few true Hollywood superstars. Joan has been gone for over 20 years now, but her movies are now classics, and the memory of her abundant talent and unique charm will live on in them forever. I have been a fan since I was a child. This web page is my tribute to her.
