But for a brief moment in the late 70's, he was one of the only commercially successful proponents of the new, stripped-down approach to rock that then was brewing in England. The Police and arrived later, and several critic's favorites like XTC never really made the big time. And heavy-weight Class of '77 punk bands like the Sex Pistols, the Clash , and the Jam were a bitter pill for many rock fans to swallow. Costello, however, combined clever, catchy songwriting, angst-ridden, moaning vocals, and a deceptively harmless, 50's-retro image that the public gobbled up. At the time I didn't like him much - his over-economical arrangements, which eschew either lengthy soloing or complex harmony, strike me as monotonous. But as the years go by his ear for melody and dynamics stands out impressively against the miserable sludge of modern rock. Less-than-obsessive Costello fans like myself will quickly run into two problems. First, the man has got to be one of the most prolific rock writers around. He has slowed down a bit in recent years, but it's hard to know where to start. Second, Costello's vocal and instrumental limitations have led him to a series of fitful experiments: country-western, orchestrated balladry, 50's roots rock, even classical music. All of these experiments are odd and off-putting, so you'd better stick with his more straight-ahead rock records - if you can figure out which ones those are. I hope this page is of some use in light of all this. Unfortunately, I've acquired most of his catalogue recently and in some cases I am still trying to formulate an opinion.

I have owned quite a number of Elvis Costello anthology albums. The first was back in the late 80s, a "Greatest Hits" LP put out by CBS/Columbia. In 91 I purchased "Girls, Girls, Girls" a triple CD collection, and recently found a budget priced cassette called "Extreme Honey: the Best of the Warner Bros. Years". Each of these had songs I liked, but often contained more that I didnt. Now I have purchased "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" and for once I can say this album absolutely lives up to its title! In 2 CDs we have an overview of the extraordinary career of one of the most prolific and multi-faceted songwriters of our time. Its wonderful! Everything is here, from the chilling "Watching the Detectives" and supersonic "Lipstick Vogue" of the early albums thru the jazz and country-tinged experiments of the late 80s up to his latest collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet and Burt Bacharach. There isnt a single song that tempts me to hit the "forward" button on my CD player.

Elvis Costello's early compositions are all here. The songs are reasonably simple to learn and sing along to. The melodies are fantastic because it's Elvis Costello, and if you haven't listened to the songs that closely, you will be amazed at how clever his wordplay is. Classic Songbook I have used this songbook so much it's falling apart. All the early songs that E.C. wrote are included. (not the covers like My Funny Valentine) Songs are from the albums My Aim is True, This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy!! and the Taking Liberties collection of b-sides and imports. A few lyrics may be a little off. There were never lyric sheets with those albums, so I may just have put in my own intrepretations. These early songs are great for budding guitarists and song writers. They are easily played on solo acoustic and you can learn about what makes a great song. Of course, you must first own the recordings! Perfect Pop For rock music fans this is a piece of history. The words and music to Elvis Costello's early canon of work, and as a contribution to the genre it doesn't get much better. Call yourself a music aficionado? Not until you've got this in your collection!
