A Biography by Jon Matthew
Francis Ford Coppola is a director, producer, composer, and writer who has had more failures (One From The Heart, The Cotton Club, Gardens of Stone, Finian's Rainbow, and Jack) than successes (Patton, The Godfather Trilogy, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now). He has survived because his successes, while few in number, have been profitable and have thus outweighed his failures at the box-office. In addition to money Patton, The Godfather Trilogy, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now have earned fourteen Academy Award nominations and five Oscars for Coppola. Coppola also has three films on AFI's Top 100 Films with The Godfather: Part II at number 32, Apocalypse Now at 28, and The Godfather at 3.
After recovering, he enrolled and was accepted to the New York Military Academy at Cornwallon-Hudson based on his proficiency in playing the tuba. He detested the schools emphasis on sports and ran away to Manhattan after eighteen months. Returning to high school, he continued to play the tuba and commenced writing plays. His aptitude as a playwright gained him a scholarship to Hofstra University where his brother had studied. As one of the Hofsta's top students he earned a reputation as a loudmouth. He graduated from Hofstra with a BA in Theater Arts in 1959 but still had no desire to be a director. His attitude changed quickly when he saw Sergei Eisenstein's Ten Days That Shook The World (1927). He later said of the film, "On Monday I was in the theater, and on Tuesday I wanted to be a film-maker" (Bergan, Francis Ford Coppola p. 16).

    INTERVIEW

    June 17, 1995
    Las Vegas, Nevada
I understand that when you were young, you watched a lot of TV. Could you tell us about that? My father was a musician. He was always interested in the new things, for that reason. He would come home from New York, and he did bring a television home, around 1945, right at the end of the Second World War. I was about 6. So I remember growing up with television, from the time it was just a test pattern, with maybe a little bit of programming once in a while. When I was about 9, I had polio, and one of the conditions of polio was of course, it was people were very frightened for their children, so you tended, if you had it, to be isolated. So...
...there was about a year and a half when I stayed at home. I was paralyzed for a while. video audio And so I basically watched television, and listened to the radio, and played with a tape recorder, and puppets, and my day was made up of those kinds of things. When did you know what you wanted to do? I was interested in two things, always. One was science, and the stories of the scientists and scientific experimentation. I liked very much to work in a shop down in the basement, and try to invent things and build gadgets. And at the same time I was interested in stories. And I had an older brother who was very interested in literature, and so I had an early exposure to literature, and what have you, and theater. My father sometimes would work in musical comedies, so I would have the opportunity to see musical comedies. Ultimately, those different technical, and sort of story interests around high school, or early high school I started to do the lighting, work on the lighting of the drama productions, and be around the shows. And so I started to become interested in theater, and...

Francis Ford Coppola
American film director, born 1939. Coppola studied film at UCLA and while there, he made numerous short films. In the last 1960s, he started his professional career making low-budget films with Roger Corman and writing. He won an Academy Award for his screenplay for Patton . However, his name as a filmmaker was made in the 1970s as the co-writer and director of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II , which both won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the latter being the first sequel to do so. Following their success he set about filming an ambitious version of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness , set during the Vietnam war. The film ( Apocalypse Now ) was beset by numerous problems, including typhoons, drug abuse, and nervous breakdowns, and delayed so often it was nicknamed Apocalypse Whenever . The film was equally lauded and hated by critics when it finally appeared, and the cost nearly bankrupted Coppola's nascent studio American Zoetrope. After a lengthy layoff Coppola returned to directing, with some commercial and critical success. The Godfather Part III , third installment in that saga, appeared in 1990. He also produced George Lucas' breakthrough film

Play
The Godfather Part 2 (1974) Written by Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo Directed by Francis Ford Coppola Rated R - Violence, Profanity
"The Godfather Part II" or: The greatest sequel ever made. The second installment of Francis Ford Coppola's ambitious and stunningly atmospheric Mafia legacy is surprisingly unmemorable in retrospect. The film is amazingly absorbing and recalls every phenomenonal, subtle strong point of the original, from the uniquely familiar yet foreign world, strong characterizations and compelling dramatic points that never reach melodrama. Yet, when compared to the visual flair and style of the original in numerous memorable moments, "The Godfather Part II" is difficult to recall in both visuals and storyline. This second part seems to get everything right despite the absence of Marlon Brando, James Caan, Sterling Hayden and Abe Vigoda, who helped propel the original from masterpiece to defining moment in filmmaking history. This "sequel" is a continuance of the first tale and brings back Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire and John Cazale from the original, and adds on a great performance from Robert De Niro for good measure. The high drama of watching this well established Mafia family comes not from a near-loss of power that riveted the first film, but from the continuing rein of Michael Corleone from flirts with complete legitamacy to melodramatic marital and sibling crises. "The Godfather Part II" is more of a male, Italian soap opera, whereas the first was an astounding, strategic drama. However, the sequence which features Robert De Niro as a young Vito Corleone from his upbringings in Italy to his rise to power in Little Italy, New York City, rivals any of the strong points found in the original. The rise to power of Vito Corleone is the strongest aspect of this film, and is wisely interpersed throughout the movie, rather than straight continuity. De Niro is dynamite, as is his redemption scene when Vito returns to Italy to avenge his mother's death on a severly aged Mafia don.

Francis Ford Coppola is best known as the five-time Oscar-winning director, writer and producer of such epic films as the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. His more recent directorial credits include Bram Stoker's Dracula, Jack, and John Grisham's The Rainmaker. His San Francisco-based film company, American Zoetrope develops and produces films for both the large and small screen. Coppola has been making films for almost 35 years and wine at his Napa Valley estate for 25. He and his wife, Eleanor purchased part of the historic Niebaum estate in 1975 and made their first vintage of Rubicon in 1978. In 1995 Coppola realized a long-held dream. He purchased the remainder of the original Inglenook estate founded by Gustave Niebaum, restoring it to its historic dimensions. The Inglenook Chateau has been painstakingly renovated, with Coppola actively involved in every aspect of the design. His restoration of the property includes replanting vineyards on the same rootstock used by the estate's founder at the turn of the century. "In America, so few things that are broken apart are ever put back together. Reuniting this property is truly a dream come true, both for my family and for Napa Valley." In addition to his film company

33. Sofia Coppola Has Grown Up On Film Before Our Eyes
Provides information on the career of the daughter of francis ford coppola.
http://www.movienavigator.org/sofia.htm
Sofia Coppola has grown up on film before our eyes. From the time she was born she appeared in her father’s films – from the baby being christened at the end of The Godfather , to rolls in The Outsiders and Rumblefish , and even a controversial turn as Mary Corleone in The Godfather, Part III . With Francis Ford Coppola as her father and Spike Jonze as her husband, it seemed only natural that she would ultimately find herself behind the camera. In 2000 she released her first feature The Virgin Suicides
While her first film was arguably inevitable, she’s now returned at age 32 with her second attempt, Lost in Translation , and in doing so has defined herself as a serious filmmaker with a vision of her own. Lost in Translation was shot in 27 days and stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannson as mismatched American strangers roaming about a Tokyo hotel over the course of a week.
I spoke with her on a recent Sunday afternoon and learned that her cousin Nicolas Cage was ironically at the same hotel in midtown to promote his latest work. If Francis Ford Coppola is known for being boisterous and larger than life, then Sofia is shy, speaking in hushed tones – though she subtly makes forceful points.
