Whether making movies or making wine, Francis Ford Coppola aims for the stars The scene is deserving of a screenplay. A Napa Valley château, a grand work of stone covered in ivy, splendidly decorated for a holiday fete. In the shadow of plump and polished Taransaud oak tanks, guests gather around glasses of wine. Not just any wines, but Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1930s through the 1960s, some of the rarest and most- esteemed wines ever produced in California. Francis Ford Coppola lingers over the 1941, produced two years after he was born. The Cabernet is a wine of beauty, elegant and remarkable in its youthfulness, and a reminder of how sparing should be our use of the word profound. The wine is both a testament to a glorious past, and a beacon for Coppola's future. Coppola staged the retrospective tasting in December 2002, culling many of the wines from his own cellar, to mark the rebirth of the Inglenook château in Rutherford as Niebaum-Coppola. Best-known as a film director, Coppola drew on his achievements from that famously difficult industry to bankroll his venture into wine. And this son of Italian immigrants, who grew up sipping his grandfather's homemade wine, has thrown himself into his Napa Valley endeavors with all the talent and passion that made him successful in Hollywood.

However, his name as a filmmaker was made in the as the co-writer and director of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II , which both won the Academy Award for Best Picture , the latter being the first sequel to do so. Following their success he set about filming an ambitious version of Joseph Conrad 's Heart of Darkness , set during the Vietnam war . The film, entitled Apocalypse Now , was beset by numerous problems, including typhoons drug abuse and nervous breakdowns, and was delayed so often it was nicknamed Apocalypse Whenever. The film was equally lauded and hated by critics when it finally appeared, and the cost nearly bankrupted Coppola's nascent studio American Zoetrope. The documentary film Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse , directed by Fax Bahr and Eleanor Coppola, chronicles the difficulties the crew went through in finishing the film. After a lengthy layoff Coppola returned to directing, with some commercial and critical success.

Inducted into the Academy in 1994 "They didn't like the cast. They didn't like the way I was shooting it. I was always on the verge of getting fired." Executives at Paramount had so little faith in the 32 year-old filmmaker they had hired to direct The Godfather, they actually hired another director to follow Francis Ford Coppola around the set, just to remind him he could be replaced at any moment. Despite studio interference, Coppola trusted his instincts, and The Godfather became a massive success with both critics and public. Along with its even more acclaimed sequel, it is one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and appears on every list of the best films ever made. Francis Ford Coppola has continued to trust his instincts, winning multiple Academy Awards for The Godfather II, and directing such legendary films as The Conversation and Apocalypse Now. He has made and lost several fortunes over the course of a life as dramatic as his own films. Today, he is more productive than ever and, both by his personal example and his generous sponsorship of young filmmakers, has left an indelible mark on the history of motion pictures.

    Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola was born in Detroit, Michigan, but grew up in Queens, New York. As a young boy he turned out 8mm features edited from home movies with such titles as The Rich Millionaire and The Lost Wallet. A bout with polio left him almost paralyzed for a year at age nine and bedridden, he developed an interest in comic books, puppetry, ventriloquism and television. The son of composer and musician Carmine Coppola, young Francis was trained for a career in music and became so proficient on the tuba that he won a musical scholarship to the New York Military Academy. Coppola's early interest in the arts led to a major in theatre at New York's Hofstra University and an MFA in film from UCLA. Coppola entered Hoffstra University in 1955 where he tackled the arts vigorously both in and out of the classroom. He was elected president of The Green Wig, the university's drama group, and the Kaleidoscopians, its musical comedy club, and then merged the two into The Spectrum Players. Under his leadership, they staged a new production each week. Coppola also founded the cinema workshop at Hofstra, contributed to the campus literary magazine, won three D.H. Lawrence Awards for theatrical production and direction, and received the Beckerman Award for his outstanding contributions to the school's theatre arts division. After earning his B.A. in theatre arts in 1959, Coppola enrolled at UCLA for graduate work in film. While there, he worked as an all purpose assistant to

    Francis Ford Coppola
    Oscar winning director,
    writer and producer

    Coppola, Francis Ford
Movie director; born in Detroit, Mich. A disciple of RogerCorman, he began directing in 1961. The phenomenal success of The Godfather (1972) led him to set up his own production company and studios, but most of his subsequent movies fared poorly with either the critics or the public, and the colossal expense of his Vietnam War film, Apocalypse Now (1979), all but drove him into bankruptcy. He would recover to continue directing his own movies and supporting those by other young filmmakers but the baroque extravagance of movies such as Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) did little to advance his reputation. His Oscars include awards for Patton (1970, for screenwriting) and three for The Godfather Part II (1974, for direction, screenwriting, and best picture). BIOGRAPHY(r) Online Database Francis Ford Coppola is best known as a five-time Oscar-winning director, writer and producer. He won his first Oscar at age 31 for the screenplay Patton, which he co-wrote with Edmund H. North. His impressive body of work includes directorial credits for 19 films; epics such as the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, and most recently Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992, and Jack, starring Robin Williams and Bill Cosby, due for release in August 1996. Coppola, who won the Palm d'Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for The Conversation and Apocalypse Now, presided as president of the jury for the 1996 festival this May. His San Francisco-based film company, American Zoetrope, develops and produces television projects and films such as 1995's Don Juan DeMarco and My Family.

    Play
Apocalypse Now (1979) Based on the Novel by Joseph Conrad Written For The Screen and Directed by Francis Ford Coppola Rated R - Strong Violence,Profanity, Brief Nudity
"Charging a man with murder in this place was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500" Francis Ford Coppola's study of insanity in the Vietnam War is a magnificent creation. Artful cinematography, bizarre elements, a probing and complex script based on Joseph Conrad's dark, depressing novel and top-name actors as unlikable characters, all make this commentary a masterpiece. Every character in this film is severly unhinged or ironically contrasted with the battle-strewn surroundings which lends considerable quality to Coppola's study of man's capacity for evil and madness. Coppola's nervous breakdown and Martin Sheen's heart attack during filming are eerily appropriate in their coincidental parallels with the mental disintegration themes of the picture. "Apocalypse Now" is a film capable of driving a casual viewer insane with the unhinged actions of its characters and Coppola's phenomenal adaptations of Joseph Conrad's primitive novel accentuates an absorbing journey into the human psyche. Coppola's "war" film is a study into man's capacity for evil and insanity. The film's brightest moments occur with Laurence Fishburne's on-screen death which connects Coppola's Vietnam film with Conrad's primitive journey towards Kurtz. A personal favorite and a great addition by Coppola is the narrative introducing Cook, who is "Wound too tight for New Orleans." Martin Sheen is dead-on as the suffering soldier unable to cleanse himself of Vietnam, and his symbolic journey down the dark rivers of Cambodia towards his target is a profound journey through the mind of madness. Marlon Brando's hollow, monosyllabic performance as Kurtz is widely misunderstood (considered a fatal flaw in the film by many critics) but he captures an important aspect of the novel and the "emptiness" essence of the war.
