Play Sidney Lumet is a very talented director whose projects are nestled in tense dramatic situations and purveyed by a restless camera. These projects are often investigations of the underbelly of some corrupt world and the debates between the morality and evil of the situations at hand are usually the highlights of Lumet's films. Just look to his film debut in "12 Angry Men" which epitomizes his fascination with debate, or "Dog Day Afternoon" which dramatizes a true-life incident into a bold, dramatic social commentary. The corruption of the world can be summed up perfectly in his insanely critical film, "Network." In retrospect, Sidney Lumet is to inner-city corruption and/or commentary what Fritz Lang was to brutal, inner-city film-noir. So, it is a striking change of pace to see Lumet tackle this ambitious project set in a British Military prison camp with the same high-voltage drama of his urban classics. "The Hill" is almost an over-seas counterpart to "Dog Day Afternoon" in its depiction of criminals battling an oppressive system. While these criminals have some validity to their arguments, it is difficult to side entirely with these anti-heroes. However, that is where the power of debate (wonderfully invigorating in both of these films) carries over into the audience after the films conclusions. From the film's opening scene where a prisoner faints after climbing up a mammoth incline of rock and sand, referred to as The Hill, to the initiations of the newest group of prisoners, Lumet promises brutality and insight. He delivers with determined intensity.

Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Cage), a mild-mannered FBI chemical warfare expert, is teamed with John Patrick Mason (Connery), a crusty ex-con who was the only man ever to break out of Alcatraz successfully, to lead the counterattack against the marauders. Director Michael Bay, never known for emotional depth or character development but plenty of action, turned out this loud, fast, and violent 1996 thriller before going on to "Armageddon" and "Pearl Harbor."

The son of a truck-driver, he came from a background very different from that of his screen alter-ego. After leaving school, he joined the Royal Navy, but was released due to ulcers.
