The Music of Stephen Collins Foster Stephen Collins Foster (born 4 Jul 1826; died 13 Jan 1864) was the son of William Barcley Foster (born: 7 Sep 1779; died 27 Jul 1855) and Elisa Clayland [Tomlinson] Foster (born: Jan 1788; died Jan 1855) who were married in 1807. He had three sisters (Charlotte Susanna, Ann Eliza, and Henrietta) and four brothers (James [who died in infancy], Dunning McNair, Morrison and William). In 1850, he married Jane Denny McDowell. T his meeting commemorates a sad occasion, a tragic eventthe passing, seventy years ago, of one who left us a legacy of song and melody that may never be forgotten. Stephen Foster was a man who had but a few pennies to leave in this world, but those things he had created added to the spiritual riches of the world a heritage far more precious than the millions of many an industrial or financial giant. To America Foster has meant much. His songs are so native in their character that there need be no hesitation in stating that his was the most national expression that any of our composers has yet achieved. Born and raised here in Pittsburgh, he was little affected by the foreign music that enslaved those who lived on the seaboard. The voices Stephen heard were those of the minstrel shows, the singing and dancing of negroes on the wharves of the Ohio River, and the sentimental songs of midcentury that were carried through the country by the 'singing families' in concert and that were sung by demure young ladies who played the accompaniments on

It was the days before the sexual revolution, or as Philip Larkin wistfully wrote in Annus Mirabilis “Sexual intercourse began in 1963, which was rather late for me.” ‘Sex’ was still a word parents whispered when they thought their children were not listening, and even such an innocuous word as ‘bottom’ could be a cause of embarrassment for some, especially in the north of England. The play concerns Percy, a 42-year-old Manchurian soccer fan who depicts these quaint sensibilities; not to be vulgar in front of a lady; respect one’s elders, and always be loyal to the family. Whilst visiting London to see a soccer match, Percy accepts a £50 bet from his mate to spend the night with a prostitute. He meets a prostitute called Cyrenne and goes back to her flat. Cyrenne quickly wants to get down to business and strips to her lingerie, however, despite Percy’s protestations that he has been with hundreds of women, he is now feeling shy and awkward and wishes to talk first. What unfolds is a sensitive revelation of two people’s loneliness.

Alderdice, Harvey Gaul (Pittsburgh's best known living composer (1930)), Burt McMurtrie and Mrs. E. B. Lee. A chorus of 1,000 voices, which was organized by Dr. Will Earhart and directed by Harvey Gaul, presented the finest open air concert yet to be heard in Pittsburgh. The program consisted largely of Stephen Foster's songs and was broadcast to the furthest reaches of radio transmission. Both the musical forces and the audience of about twelve thousand were filmed for use in moving picture reproductions. The Pittsburgh Orchestra of ninety men made a most valuable contribution to the occasion. In the New York Times of July 3, 1926, appeared the following announcement: "The Hundredth Anniversary of the birth of Stephen Foster will be celebrated in various parts of the country today, tomorrow and Monday. In Bardstown, Kentucky, where he composed My old Kentucky Home, five former governors of the State, a quartet from Louisville and a military band will honor his memory. His birthday will be honored here in the Bowery, where he spent the last years of his life, with a program of Foster songs."
