Apollo spirit: Female shuttle commander wants to 'get the job done'
Collins will become the first woman commander in space when Columbia takes off in mid-July ALSO Shuttle mission aims to make history July 13, 1999

Web posted at: 6:30 p.m. EDT (2230 GMT)
(CNN) For Air Force Col. Eileen Collins , it's high time. The first woman to command a NASA space mission is ready to lead her crew of four into orbit around Earth aboard the space shuttle Columbia on the 30th anniversary of the first moonwalk. "I don't think about being the first," said Collins, 42. "I just worry about getting the job done." Eileen Collins may not think about it because she is used to being a pioneer. Among the first group of women to fly for the U.S. Air Force, she signed on with NASA in 1990 becoming the first woman pilot of a NASA space shuttle five years later. "I've been kind of lucky," says Collins, a native of Elmira, New York. She majored in math and economics at Syracuse University and got Master's degrees from Stanford University and Webster University.

- Col. Eileen Collins Eileen Collins asked herself this question as she accepted her high school diploma. She attended junior college for two years, and then transferred to Syracuse University where she majored in math and joined the Air Force ROTC. Upon graduation, she went right into officer training and Air Force flight school. In 1990, while attending the Air Force's elite Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, Col. Collins was selected for Astronaut training. In 1994, she flew her first mission as a space shuttle pilot. On July 23, 1999, Col. Collins became the first woman in history to command a space shuttle mission. Back to Heroines in Aviation

Why Not Reach for the Stars
-by Julie The third time's a charm! July 23, 1999 marked a historic event. Thirty years after the Apollo 11 team first set foot on the moon, now, another first: When Columbia lifted off, it was under control of the first woman Space Shuttle Commander, Eileen Collins. This great event had been planned to take off on the very day of the anniversary of the first step on the moon. The crew was strapped in and ready to go. The final countdown ticked down the seconds: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6-"Cutoff!" And emergency halt was given as an indicator detected too much hydrogen at the base. The crew scrambled to shut off equipment and get out of the rocket filled with more than 500,000 gallons fuel. Then a few days later, weather halted the launch. They delays were a huge disappointment for all involved. But it does show that safety measures are in place. Then early Friday morning, the crew readied themselves for a third attempt. If this one failed, the mission would be delayed for at least another month. Excitement grew as the launch countdown passed the earlier stopping point, engines fired, and the heaviest payload in history lifted off toward space. Then a scary call - trouble! Collins indicated they had a fuel cell problem. Tense seconds passed as NASA examined the situation. Those that watched held their breath and tried not to remember events like the Challenger.

    By MARK CARREAU
If it was only a matter of time before a woman assumed command of an American space mission, then it was likely a foregone conclusion that the job would go to astronaut Eileen Collins. Driven by a lifelong love of flying, the 42-year-old Air Force colonel and test pilot spent the last 20 years overcoming a series of obstacles and professional challenges to position herself for a spot in aviation history. Monday, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of man's first walk on the moon, Collins will scramble aboard the space shuttle Columbia to set a milestone of her own and prepare her crew to blast off from the Kennedy Space Center with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. With the exception of Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's 71-hour solo voyage in a small Vostok capsule in 1963, no woman has ever claimed dominion over a spacecraft. None has ever assumed command responsibility for the safety of an entire crew of space travelers, nor for the success of a mission as complex as Columbia's. Collins' crew will deploy the $1.55 billion Chandra X-ray Observatory, a large space telescope designed for the study of stellar explosions, galactic collisions and black holes. Together with its propulsion system, the Chandra observatory is the largest payload ever delivered to space by a shuttle.

    Remarks At The White House
On Being Named First United States Woman
To Command A Manned Space Flight
    by Colonel Eileen Collins
United States Astronaut, Commander, STS-93 March 5, 1998 Mr. President, Mrs. Clinton, and Administrator Goldin, I just can't tell you how much of an honor it is for me to be here today. And I'm just so excited about this opportunity that I have to command a space shuttle flight. And I want to tell you that since I was a child I've dreamed about space. I've admired pilots, astronauts, and I've admired explorers of all kinds. And it was only a dream of mine that I would someday be one of them and have these kinds of opportunities. Throughout my life I've studied the universe that we live in and I've just been fascinated by astronomy and all kinds of science. And again, it was only a dream of mine that someday I'd have the opportunity to be part of such an important astronomy mission as this one, the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility. And throughout my life, and in particular, in my career in the U.S. military and with NASA, I've been given important jobs and responsibilities, and I now accept this responsibility with all the determination and the motivation and the diligence that I've had in all the other challenges I've faced. I also think it's important that I point out that I didn't get here alone. There are so many women throughout this century that have gone before me and have taken to the skies. From the first barnstormers through the women military Air Force service pilots from World War II, the Mercury women from back in the early 1960s that went through all the tough medical testing to become the first astronauts, to the first women who entered the Air Force and Navy military pilot training in the mid 1970s, and most important, the first women astronauts and I'd like to point out Sally Ride, who is with us here today all these women have been my role models and my inspiration and I couldn't be here today without them. And I'd like to say a special thank you to them. (Applause.)

Reading the short biographical piece on Col. Eileen Collins that NASA sent me, I was impressed. For one thing, she collects college degrees the way I collect CDs. And these degrees are in pretty challenging subjects: mathematics, science, economics, operations research, and space systems management. She’s a trained pilot and a pilot trainer, and she also was an associate professor of mathematics. Then there’s the small matter of being the first woman to pilot, and then command, a NASA Space Shuttle. Here’s what she had to say about her career as a Federal employee so far.
