By Derek Malcolm Thursday July 1, 1999 Watching it now, you can't feel its audacity as you might have done at the time. Faithfully, but not totally innocently, based on the fairy tale by Madame LePrince de Beaumont, it is almost purely visual, even if a Freudian analysis is possible. And it is certainly completely different in atmosphere and style from anything that had gone before, at least in the commercial cinema. The team who made it in 1946 - and it was a team - broke a good many rules at the urging of Cocteau. Georges Auric's memorable music didn't so much underline the visuals as frequently cut across them, reaching a synthesis at vital moments. Henri Alekan's equally extraordinary cinematography, which the studio described unsympathetically as "white cheese", is the opposite of conventionally fantastic. "I'm pushing Alekan in precisely the opposite direction from what fools think is poetic," Cocteau wrote. Alekan's black-and-white photography was sharp and unfuzzy, set in a credible French country landscape that contains not just the realistic home of Beauty but also the weird, enchanted domicile of the Beast. It could almost be a documentary - which allows us to believe anything Cocteau asks of us.

Cocteau, Jean O Pronunciation Key Cocteau, Jean , French writer, visual artist, and filmmaker. He experimented audaciously in almost every artistic medium, becoming a leader of the French avant-garde in the 1920s. His first great success was the novel Les Enfants Terribles (1929), which he made into a film in 1950. Surrealistic fantasy suffuses his films and many of his novels and plays. Among his best dramatic works are (1926) and La Machine infernale (1934, tr. 1936), in which the Orpheus and Oedipus myths are surrealistically adapted to modern circumstances. His films include The Blood of a Poet Beauty and the Beast (1946), and (1949). Among other works are ballets, sketches, monologues, whimsical drawings, and the text (written with Stravinsky) for the opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex See his autobiography; comp. from his writings by R. JAVIER MAMBA

After Dargelos died, Cocteau ran away to Marseille, where he lived among sailors and prostitutes. The image of Dargelos "as the shameless, untutored faun" appears in The White Paper (1928), Cocteau's celebration of homosexuality, as well as in his journal Opium (1930), the novel Children of the Game (1929), and the film The Blood of the Poet Paris cafes, boulevards, theaters, salons, galleries, and lovers provided Cocteau a lifetime of education and entertainment, what the high-school dropout described as his "Sorbonne." The actor Edouard de Max, who played opposite Sarah Bernhardt, guided him through the Parisian scene (with the approval of Cocteau's mother) and helped the decadent youth publish his first three books of poems ( Alladin's Lamp The Frivolous Prince and Sophocles' Dance The ballet brought him into contact with Nijinsky and Sergei Diaghilev, who in 1912 demanded of the youth: "Astonish me."

Cocteau, Jean (1889-1963) Prolific French poet, artist, playwright, actor, and filmmaker, Jean Cocteau published his first poems in his early twenties. He established his reputation, as both respected artist and popular Parisian man-about-town, with the success of several ballets and plays that he wrote in his late twenties. Although his formal schooling was ragged, he educated himself through his wide reading and extensive travel. In the early 1920s, Cocteau's lover, novelist Raymond Radiguet, died of typhoid fever; the despondent Cocteau, reportedly to escape the pain of this loss, soon after began using opium. In 1930, the poet broached filmmaking, which critics often cite as the medium best suited for his artistic expression. For instance, in (1930), a stylized
