The Dark Side of Kurt Cobain Nirvana's front man shoots from the hip by Kevin Allman
It's 4 o'clock on a cold Seattle afternoon, and Kurt Cobain, the lyricist-guitarist-lead singer of Nirvana, is sitting in a downtown hotel room, playing with his 5-month-old daughter, Frances, while his wife, Courtney Love-lead singer of her own band, Hole-applies her makeup. At the moment, the Cobains (including the baby) are on the cover of Spin magazin-which has named Nirvana as Artist of the Year-and the band's new album, Incesticide, is due out within the week. The Nirvana media machine should be in high gear. But, no. What's surprising is what's not in the Cobains' room: no entourage, no groupies, no publicists, and no signs of the high life-in any sense of the term. Cobain, in fact, is wearing a pair of fuzzy green pajamas. And he and Love are in Seattle for the sole reason of trying to speed the deal on a modest house they've been trying to buy. The only concession to Cobain's being what he mockingly calls "a rock icon" is the pseudonym under which he has registered, Simon Ritchie. It's a joke-Ritchie was the real name of Sid Vicious, the Sex Pistol who died from a heroin overdose-and it shows that the Cobains have a sense of humor about being tagged by the press as a modern-day Sid and Nancy. If the Cobains are being reclusive these days, they explain, it's not because they feel they've been strung up-by the media, which they feel have painted them as a pair of junkies without a cause. "Everyone thinks we're on drugs again, even people we work with," says Cobain resignedly as Love paints on a perfect baby-doll mouth. "I guess I'll have to get used to that for the rest of my life."

KURT COBAIN 1967-1994
"We remember Kurt for what he was: caring, generous and sweet. Let's keep the music with us. We'll always have it. Kurt had an ethic towards his fans that was rooted in the punk rock way of thinking. No band is special, no player royalty. If you've got a guitar and a lot of soul, just bang something out and mean it. You're the superstar. Collecting the tones and rhythms that are uniquely and universally human: music! Heck, use your guitar as a drum. Just catch the groove and let it flow out of your heart." "That's the level that Kurt spoke to us on: in our hearts. And that's where he and his music will always be forever." Krist Novoselic
  • In the year since Kurt Cobain took his life, Krist Novoselic has mainly diverted his energies into reflection and politics. While writing a book, he helped activist Richard White organise the Joint Artists' and Music Promotions Political Action Committee (aka JAMPAC). It was initially established 18 February 1995, in response to a pair of state attempts at music censorship: Bills SB 5466 and HB1448. JAMPAC's parent organisation is the Washington State Music Coalition (WMIC: telephone US 206-622-7177). When WMIC organised a public rally, Novoselic attended and spoke to the reporters present. His comments included the following: "We are an economic force and we want to get the respect that is due us...The only way you do anything is to become really active. And the most effective way to get your message to your elected representatives is to make campaign contributions and develop relationships with them."

Ten years gone. The unifinished story of Kurt Cobain. Hard to believe that it's been ten years since the unwelcome news was broadcast. As a Cobain contemporary/gen X'er/Seattle musican in the 90s, my own heart is still broken.

Not that this story should have anything whatsoever to do with me. Just wanted to reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime songwriter whose work spoke so directly to so many of us.

There is another part to the story that is being missed. If you look at Cobain in the last year of his life, then man is obviously in agony. He complained of severe stomach pain, and from the look of him, it was a painful as a major ulcer.
Now, the assumption by most people is that it was because he was a junkie, and experiencing withdrawls. But I suspect this was not the case. I think it was something above and beyond his addiction.
But when someone shoots themselves in the head, the assumption is that it was mental illness. Perhaps they didn't look for an underlying physical cause. Ulcers are not the only agonizing upper GI problem, there are half a dozen things that literally could have made his life not worth living.

Paul Beard reminded me that yesterday was the 10th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, which also reminded me that Cobain's death was the first time in my life that I got breaking news first from "amateur" journalists via the Internet. Back then, I wasn't reading a blog, I was reading alt.music.nirvana on Usenet. I can't find the original post, but I recall it saying something about a body being found at Kurt Cobain's house in Seattle, and the author suggested that it might be Cobain. This was hours before I heard the news from any major media outlet. At the time, Usenet functioned much like the blogosphere does now, but without the conveniences of RSS and HTTP (and despite the usability issues in various RSS aggregators, we've come a long way from trn Through the magic of Google, I found a post of mine to alt.society.generation-x about

And in an age of media prying, he died right in front of our eyes. By Bill Wyman In the early years of the last decade, we watched the concussive career of the rock band Nirvana from early word about an explosive new group from Seattle, to the release of the group's epochal "Nevermind" in September 1991, to the wrenching suicide of its leader, Kurt Cobain, on a sad April day two and a half years later. There are a pair of interesting disconnects between what we lived through then and the story offered by a new biography of Cobain, the group's songwriter and singer. The charismatic, talented and troubled Cobain led the group into a furious and extraordinary career that sold millions of records of caustic and uncompromising rock at a time when radio hated it and it seemed like there was no mass market for it. The new biography is "Heavier Than Heaven," by Charles R. Cross; it's a detailed, comprehensive and dispassionate major look at Cobain's life. By disconnects, I mean that the story Cross tells us reorients us to what was important about Cobain's life and his death. In a couple of ways it's different from what we thought or were, in effect, led to think at the time.

A victim of the Binary and Biphobia? Introduction (2000): "The Suicide Of Kurt Cobain: A Victim Of The Binary And Biphobia?"
was originally part of the chapter, "The Suicide of Kurt Cobain and Bobby Steele," in the 1994 book, The Gay, Lesbian And Bisexual Factor In The Youth Suicide Problem by Pierre Tremblay. The words "binary" and "biphobia," however, were not used when the chapter was written. The "binary" refers to the recent belief that only homosexual and heterosexual people exist, and this belief is likely implicated in the rising North American youth suicide rate since 1950, males having accounted for about 90% of the increase in youth suicide ( Tremblay and Ramsay, 2000 ). Kurt Cobain self-identified as bisexual in a highly biphobic binary-believing personal environment which negated his perceived self-reality. In the 109-page paper

[picture: Tom Grant, the private investigator Courtney hired to find Kurt] PRIVATE EYE OF THE STORM Beverly Hills, CA private investigator Tom Grant, a 49-year-old grandfather of seven and seven year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, hardly falls into the demographic of the average Nirvana fan. So it's not surprising that when, on Easter Sunday, April 3,1994, Courtney Love hired him to track down her husband Kurt Cobain's missing credit card, he initially thought little of the assignment. "I knew vaguely who Nirvana was." says the PI. Grant was about to embark on a road of deception, intrigue and cover-ups that would lead him, nine months later, to a stunning conclusion regarding the death of Kurt Cobain, who was found dead in Seattle on April 8, 1994. Grant's first clues that all was not right came during his meeting with Love later that day at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills where she was staying. "She told me on the phone that someone was using her husband's credit card and she wanted to find out who it was," recounts Grant. "Then, when I met her at the hotel, she changed that immediately to, "It's not someone else using his card, it's him, and I'm trying to locate him." It just kind of spread from there.

Plus: an interview with Cobain on the day "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was released. The magnolia trees are in bloom again in Denny-Blaine. In this Seattle neighborhood of timber-baron mansions and waterfront estates, wealthy homeowners employ a phalanx of gardeners to keep the blossoms fine-tuned. Centered by Lake Washington Boulevard, the neighborhood is home to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and many of the region's newest tech millionaires. But amid the Martha Stewart-like affluence is another more somber spring ritual. During the first week of April, Viretta Park becomes ground zero for a steady stream of mourners paying tribute to the memory of a Seattle musician. It was here, while living in a three-story mansion next to the park, that Kurt Cobain took his own life on April 5, 1994. The faithful come daily to this postage-stamp-sized park on Lake Washington Boulevard. Many travel here from faraway states or nations, all touched in some way by the music of Cobain and his band Nirvana. There are rarely crowds, except on anniversaries, but locals notice fans regularly making the pilgrimage, and the park is listed in guidebooks as the "Kurt Cobain park."

    Ten years gone
The unfinished story of Kurt Cobain
    BY MATT ASHARE
In Memoriam Kurt Cobain By Jon Garelick. State of Nirvana : A conversation with Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic. Interview by Kurt St. Thomas. In the time that’s passed since, two things have become painfully clear: Cobain’s heroin addiction was a much bigger problem than anyone was willing to admit while he was alive; and keeping the condition of a person in his position a secret was the mistake that gave him the opportunity to slip quietly away, forever. Beyond that, there are facts mixed with myths, stories and rumors, pictures and videos, journal entries and interviews, chords and lyrics. Dozens of articles have been written, numerous books have been published, and at least one full-length documentary has seen nationwide release. It all adds up to a cacophonous mass of contradictory information as endless and nameless as the hidden track of the same title that closes out the 1991 DGC CD that created Nirvana for the masses, Nevermind For years — in fact until this past week — the only Nirvana album I could bear to listen to was Unplugged in New York But Unplugged in New York gradually drew me back to the band. I’d always found there to be something particularly appealing about Kurt’s giving so much MTV airtime to three songs from an old Meat Puppets album and going so far as to invite Cris and Curt Kirkwood to participate in the performance. And I’m sure that Curt Kirkwood’s playful approach to writing lyrics about human mortality defused some of the negative emotions I had about Kurt’s suicide. Beyond that, though, the rootsy/folky feel of those performances seemed to reflect a musical direction that Cobain was considering in the months leading up to his suicide — a direction that his friend Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan eventually did pursue as a solo artist. Kurt mentioned it in interviews, as did his friend Michael Stipe, who revealed to

It therefore came as a surprise to the editors of HIGH TIMES when on December 17, 1994, the magazine received a fax from a Seattle-based group, "Friends Understanding Kurt," laying partial blame for Cobain's suicide on the master himself. The gist of the charge was that in the last months of his life, Cobain acquired a device called the Dream Machine, which had been created by Burroughs' friend and collaborator Brion Gysin and popularized by Burroughs. The Dream Machine, the group wrote, is "a dangerous trance-inducing contraption," and there has been a "string of suicides associated with the machine since the '60s." Furthermore, they claimed, it was "in fact, the catalyst in Kurt's unbelievably tragic, untimely death. To this day Courtney ponders whether the Dream Machine is really responsible for Kurt's death...If Kurt had not come into contact with its manufacturer, he would be with us today." The Dream Machine consists of a cardboard cylinder with holes in it attached to a record-player turntable, in the middle of which sits a 100-watt light bulb. When the machine is turned on, the cylinder spins at 78 rpm. Subjects sit in front of the cylinder and close their eyes, and the light reflects through the holes in the spinning cylinder on the eyelids. The resulting flashes of light may, if the subjects are susceptible, create a mild sensation akin to the effect of the simplest light show. Aided by the inhalation of good pot and the sound of hot rock, the device might create at best a mild dreamlike sensation, or at worst (unless you're prone to epileptic seizures) an even milder headache. It's an adaptation of flicker technology, first seen with strobe lights and now packaged as brain machines.

(CBS) Legendary rocker Kurt Cobain defined a generation, after his band Nirvana brought alternative music into the mainstream with the rock anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
It's now been 10 years since Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death quickly was ruled a suicide. Max Wallace and Ian Halperin, the book's co-authors, and Tom Grant, who has been investigating Cobain's death for 10 years, visited The Early Show to share their findings. Halperin tells co-anchor Hannah Storm the book reveals that it is scientifically impossible for Cobain to have committed suicide.

Radcliffe Fellow marries classroom experience and academic credentials to explore civic education

Until 1999, Radcliffe Fellow Meira Levinson's two professional worlds - she's an urban middle school teacher and an Oxford-trained political theorist - existed separately. Her days in the classroom didn't overlap with the academic papers she published or conferences she attended. Levinson's worlds collided, however, on a bus ride across Atlanta four years ago. She and her middle school students, who were all African American, were returning from a quiz bowl at a school on the other side of town, where they had suffered a resounding defeat by the mostly white team there. But Levinson was less interested in discussing their loss than in probing one question: Had her students understood why the rival team laughed when they missed identifying Kurt Cobain as the leader of the band Nirvana, instead pegging him a Wimbledon winner?
