CLEESE, JOHN British Actor John Cleese belongs to a tradition of university humour which has supplied a recognisable strand of comedy to British television and radio from Beyond the Fringe in the late 1950s to Blackadder and beyond. The brilliance of his writing, the dominant nature of his performances (due largely to his extraordinary height) and the variety of his successes have made him undoubtedly the most influential figure of this group. He has always shown an unerring instinct for how far to go with any one project or idea, with the result that there is little in his large body of work that could be counted as failure, though he is also highly critical, in hindsight, of anything he regards as not having worked precisely as he might have wanted it to. Following the success of Cambridge Circus, the Cambridge University Footlights Club revue to which he contributed and which toured Britain and the World between 1963 and 1965, Cleese made his first big impact on television by writing and performing sketches on David Frost's The Frost Report (BBC). (He had already written material for

Gilliam came to England just 12 years ago for a bet. He's still there, ensconced in his Hampstead, London, England, Europe studio home. A painter, a sculptor, a near-professional-standard opera singer, a photo-journalist and a former swimming champion all live nearby. Some friends call Gilliam a Renaissance man: others place him earlier. The sloping forehead, the forward slant of the body as he lopes and the prognathous jaw all point to the Upper Paleolithic period. But whatever his physical appearance, his graphics, drawings and paintings are unmistakably Lascaux. And his energy is Cromagnon to match. Left alone with some crates of crayons, some bales of paper and a box or two of fresh fruit, his output is nothing short of phenomenal. But Terry Gilliam is not just an illustrator.
