Skeet's Who Page Charlotte '71 The Who was the first sold out rock show Charlotte had. I didn't start out in the front rowwhen they came onstage a near riot ensued and I was actually pushed to the front. The police were tossing people over the barrier in front of the stage, and I remember seeing a cop swing one unlucky long-haired fan around by his hair. Townshend leaned over the stage with his hands extended with a "stop" gesture after the opening number of I Can't Explain until the cops quit pushing people around and the crowd settled down. After that the band seemed to enjoy themselves. It was the first stop of their Autumn of '71 North American tour. Moon commented on the size of the crowd, saying "It's nice to see so many people in Charlotte. I didn't know there WAS this many people in Charlotte." They played some of their old standards in addition to I Can't Explain , such as Summertime Blues Baby Don't You Do It , and Magic Bus . Most of the concert revolved around "Who's Next" and "Tommy," and ended with an extended My Generation that included Naked Eye . Something pissed Townshend off during Magic Bus and he almost jerked sound man Bobby Pridden over an amplifier, and then tossed his guitar in the air at the end of the song, letting it crash to the stage. It was by far the best rock concert I have ever seen.

In fact, since the early Nineties triumph of Unplugged , a perfect showcase for a softer, more mature artist, he seems a stable, more secure figure and several cuts on the new collection Reptile The album's tone is set by Clapton's sleeve notes, reflecting on a relationship with his uncle Adrian, a relationship complicated by the fact that Eric grew up believing the elder man to be his brother. Adrian died last year and Reptile , a term of affection in Clapton's vocabulary, is a tribute to his late, and clearly inspirational, relative. Pennies From Heaven The effect could have been mawkish but it's actually quite moving. Clapton, circumspect as a composer and still highly adept as a musical practitioner, has his own authentic blues to draw on now and, in many ways, they hit a truer note than when he dips into the older, existing catalogue of standards.

Pilgrim Eric Clapton (Polydor ’70) Rating: B+ After the excesses of Cream and Blind Faith , Eric Clapton was looking for a more modest outlet for his talents, and he found it supporting Delaney and Bonnie on tour (a record ensued titled Delaney and Bonnie on Tour with Eric Clapton ). He then moved onto this, his first solo album, on which Delaney and Bonnie and friends (which included Stephen Stills and Leon Russell) were still very much in evidence (especially Delaney, who produced the album). As such, Eric Clapton had a loose, funky feel that was far removed from his previous work, in part because Clapton traded in his muscular Gibson for the leaner sounds of a Stratocaster. And though many fans disapproved of this new direction (and still do) and yearned for a little less Delany Bramlett and a little more Eric Clapton, this was a fine first effort that remains one of his best. Perennial favorites emerged with “Blues Power,” a cover of J.J. Cale’s “After Midnight,” and “Let It Rain,” one of Clapton’s best efforts ever on which he finally unleashed some transcendent guitar. Note: After this Clapton took three of Delaney and Bonnie’s “friends” (Jim Gordon, drums; Carl Radle, bass; and Bobby Whitlock, keyboards and vocals) and, together with Duane Allman One of the greatest guitar records of all-time
