130. Welcome To Patriarch Ch'an
The founder of the Tu An Zen Temple at Santa Ana, Chan Master Wei Li Thich Duy Luc in Vietnamese is an 89th generation master in the Chan tradition. He was a student of Master Dieu Duyen who was a close disciple of Master hsu Yun Empty Cloud and Master Lai Kuo. This site contains articles about Buddhism, Chan Buddhism, and a biography of the master.
http://www.patriarch-chan.com/patriarchchan_weili_content.htm
Ch’an Master Wei Li Thich Duy Luc in Vietnamese] is of the 89th generation in the Ch’an tradition, tracing down from Mahakasyapa. Born in 1923 in the province of Canton, China, he came to Vietnam in 1938 where he later became a school teacher of Chinese and then an Oriental medicine doctor. For 8 years, he worked at the free-of-charge medical office of Minh Nguyet Cu Si Lam Buddhist temple in Can Tho There was at Cu Si Lam temple a complete series of the Supplementary Tripitaka of 150 volumes. The Master wanted to read the whole series. But after one year of reading with an average of 10 hours a day, he was only able to read 7 volumes. Seeing that it would take him at least 20 years, just to complete reading the Supplementary Tripitaka, let alone the Main Tripitaka, the Master decided that he would only read the volumes on Ch’an In 1965, he began practicing under the guidance of Ch’an Master Dieu Duyen of the Patriarch Ch’an tradition. Master Dieu Duyen was a close disciple of the eminent Chinese Ch’an Masters Hsu Yun [Empty Cloud] and Lai Kuo for many years.

Master Hsu Yun's Poetry LINKS TO OTHER PAGES Home Page Biography of Master Hsu Yun Perquisites for Chan Training Master Hsu Yun's ... About Hsu Yun Buddhist Association. Bitter Rain Bitter rain soaks the pile of kindling twigs. The night so cold and still the lamp flame hardly moves. Clouds condense and drench our stone walled hut. Broken rushes clog the reed gate's way. The stream gurgles, a torrent in its bed. That's all we hear. Only rarely, comes a human voice... But oh, how priceless is this peace of mind that fills us As we sit on our heels and put on another Chan monk's robe! The Barking Dog We went up across the ridge for the fun of it. Didn't need to pack any more wine. On the precipice, flowers opened, smiling. By the river, willows grew bright. In the drizzling rain the village smoke congealed, concealed. The wind was slight and the grass was cool. There in the woods' underbrush, startled, We suddenly heard a dog bark. It wanted us to know the Master was aware. The Exquisite Truth This is an exquisite truth: Saints and ordinary folks are the same from the start.

Thus have I heard. One morning, when the Buddha was staying near Shravasti in the jeta grove of Anathapindika's estate, He and His company of twelve hundred and fifty monks went into the city to beg for their breakfast; and after they returned and finished their meal, they put away their robes and bowls and washed their feet. Then the Buddha took His seat and the others sat down before Him. From the midst of this assembly rose the Venerable Subhuti. He bared his right shoulder, knelt upon his right knee, and, pressing his palms together, bowed to the Buddha. "Lord," he said, "Tathagata! World Honored One! How wonderful it is that by Thy mercy we are protected and Instructed! Lord, when men and women announce that they desire to follow the Bodhisattva Path and ask us how they should proceed, what should we tell them?" "Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva should be detached from all desires, whether they be for the sight or sound, the smell, the touch or taste of something, or whether they be for leading multitudes to enlightenment A Bodhisattva does not savor ambition. His love is infinite and cannot be Limited by personal attachments or ambitions. When love is infinite its merits are incalculable.

A drum has to be hollow for its sound to reverberate. Absences count. Words limit. Interpretations differ. What isn't said is also relevant. Absolute Truth cannot be expressed in words. It must be experienced. "And then, in eloquent silence we best reveal that we have awakened to the Dharma."
