Chase Provenance the artist Ms. Mary Elizabeth Lyman, Middlefield, Connecticut, about 1900 by descent in the family [Spanierman Gallery, New York] private collection, 1987 Note WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE (1849-1916) William Merritt Chase's pictures placed him firmly in the forefront of American Impressionism, for their renderings of natural light and color through loose strokes confirmed his understanding of the new philosophy. This was actually a new way of seeing, calling for concentration on optical impressions and recognition of their transitory qualities. Sunset at Shinnecock Hills , with its radiant golden sun tones, is a good example of Chase's efforts to capture chromatic effects. Here he comes closest to Monet's achievements in describing the colored light unique to a particular hour, and seems far more attuned to this goal than most of his American colleagues. Like Monet, too, he does not hesitate to use paint as paint. Only in the handsome pink clouds, which are painted with an obvious respect for scientific accuracy, do we see real evidence of the difference between the American and the French versions of Impressionism.

Chase, William Merritt Chase, William Merritt (1849-1916). American painter. He settled in New York in 1878 after five years studying in Munich and became the most important American teacher of his generation. He taught at the Art Students' League of New York and then at his own Chase School of Art, founded in 1896. The vigorous handling and fresh color characteristic of much of the best American painting of the early 20th century owes a good deal to his example. His pupils (whom he encouraged to paint in the open air) included Demuth, O'Keefe, and Sheeler. Chase was a highly prolific artist (his output of more than 2000 paintings included still lifes, portraits, interiors, and landscapes), and his work is represented in many American museums. William Merritt Chase Modern American Landscapes, 1886-1890 The Brooklyn Museum of Art May 26-August 13, 2000 The Art Institute of Chicago September 7-November 26, 2000 The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston December 13, 2000-March 11, 2001 "Wash Day - A Back Yard Reminiscence of Brooklyn," a 22-by-25-inch oil on canvas, 1886, anonymously lent to the exhibition By Carter B. Horsley Childe Hassam, on the other hand, experimented wildly with many different styles, with varying degrees of success, producing a few masterpieces and an impressive and very interesting body of work. The American Impressionist painter who produced the most memorable works was John Twachtman, but his oeuvre is also very uneven and contains only a few masterpieces. His best works sublimely combine Impressionism with a poetic abstraction. Probably the best American Impressionist was Winslow Homer but art historians usually put him in other categories even though he was contemporary with and uninfluenced by the French Impressionists. This exhibition focuses on the period between 1886 and 1890 when Chase painted a lot of urban park scenes in New York City and landscapes around Shinnecock, Long Island.

It has been estimated that 1-5% of the US population is now infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is also common. Worldwide, infection by these viruses are the major cause of heptocellular carcinoma. The overall goals of our research are to characterize how these viruses replicate, their interactions with the infected host, the steps which lead to cell transformation and tumor outgrowth, and the effects of antiviral therapy on the long-term consequences of infection. KATHRYN WILLIAMS "Old Low Light" Buy this fine album right now from the "7~9" CD shop! He r first album came out in 1999 and was recorded on a shoestring. Called D og L eap S tairs' it got some terrific reviews. " J aw-droppingly beautiful" - NME. "One of this year's most emotionally satisfying albums" - The Times . A year later she released 'Little Black Numbers' on her own CAW label ("the sound that a crow makes") which again received very positive comments and lead to it being nominated for the highly prestigious Mercury Music Award. Although she didn't win the gong (that time it was taken by the Badly Drawn Boy for his sumptuous "Hour Of Bewilderbeast" album) it did give Kathryn much more attention outside the eclectic, and lead to many major record labels wanting to sign her. She chose to sign to EastWest and this is the resulting product. Thankfully untouched by the hands of marauding record company executives, this is as touching and thoughtful as its predecessors. Her style is somewhere between folk at mellow pop, and once again she is working with the same bunch of musicians - so the sound is a fluid continuation from before.
