(b. 1946)
Memories of Summer
Sally Swatland was born in 1946 in Washington, DC and moved to Greenwich, Connecticut when she was seven. Her father was a successful attorney, which allowed her family to spend long periods in the countryside with many vacations at various seaside locations throughout the United States. She shared a passion with her family for beaches, sunshine, and fresh air. Most summer days were spent at the beach playing in tidal pools, chasing minnows, collecting shells and exploring.
Sally has two sisters who were also encouraged to study drawing, painting, and anything that developed creative expression. Throughout her childhood and teens she painted and drew constantly, developing skill at observing and recording the world around her. She started painting when she was five. Throughout grammar school, high school and college she was always enrolled in art classes. She has always had a passion for art and loves experimenting with color and light.
After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from Mount Saint Vincent College, she went on to study formal figure drawing for six years (1969-1974) at the Art Students League of New York. There she studied under Robert Shultz (the illustrator who continued Norman Rockwell's tradition and became famous for his illustrations that graced the covers of many Zane Gray books).

WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE
CHASE, WILLIAM MERRITT (1849 ), American painter, was born at Franklin, Indiana, on the 1st of November 1849. He was a pupil of B. F. Hays at Indianapolis, of J. 0. Eaton in New York, and subsequently of A. Wagner and Piloty in Munich. In New York he established a school of his own, after teaching with success for some years at the Art Students League. A worker in all mediumsoils, water-color, pastel and etching painting with distinction the figure, landscape and still-life, he is perhaps best known by his portraits, his sitters numbering some of the most important men and women of hi; time. Mr Chase won many honors at home and abroad, became a member of the National Academy of Design, New York, and for ten years was president of the Society of American Artists. Among his important canvases are Ready for the Ride (Union League Club, N.Y.), The Apprentice, Court Jester, and portraits of the painters Whistler and Duvenecl~ of General Webb and of Peter Cooper. CHASE. (I) (Fr. chasse, from Lat. clptare, frequentative of capere, to take), the pursuit of wild animals for food or sport (see HUNTING). The word is used of the pursuit of anything, and also qf the thing pursued, as, in naval warfare, of a ship. A transferred meaning is that of park land reserved for the breeding and hunting of wild animals, in which sense it appears in various place-names in England, as Cannock Chase. It is also a term for a stroke in tennis (q.v.). (2) (Fr. chdsse, Lat. capsa, a box, cf. caisse, and chest ), an enclosure, such as the muzzle-end of a gun in front of the trunnions, a groove cut to hold a pipe, and, in typography, the frame enclosing the forme.

Home Chase, William Merritt Chase, William Merritt (1849-1916). American painter. He settled in New York in 1878 after five years studying in Munich and became the most important American teacher of his generation. He taught at the Art Students' League of New York and then at his own Chase School of Art, founded in 1896. The vigorous handling and fresh color characteristic of much of the best American painting of the early 20th century owes a good deal to his example. His pupils (whom he encouraged to paint in the open air) included Demuth, O'Keefe, and Sheeler. Chase was a highly prolific artist (his output of more than 2000 paintings included still lifes, portraits, interiors, and landscapes), and his work is represented in many American museums.
