Biography
An essay on Charlie Chaplin written by Aaron Hale is available. C harlie Chaplin was born Charles Spencer Chaplin in London, England on 16 April 1889. His parents, Charles Chaplin, Sr and Hannah Hill were music hall entertainers but separated shortly after Charlie was born, leaving Hannah to provide for her children. In 1896 when Hannah was no longer able to care for her children, Charlie and his brother Sydney were admitted to Lambeth Workhouse and later, Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute Children. Charlie had already debuted in the music hall in 1894, when he had sung a song after his mother was taken hoarse.

Chaplin - an essay by Aaron Hale
Feltham once said, "Laughter should dimple the cheek, not furrow the brow." Charlie Chaplin was a man who definitely dimpled millions of cheeks in the early 1900's. He had a huge impact on the lives of Americans during the world wars and the hard times of the Depression and he made people laugh for the first time in a long time and changed the way they looked at the world despite his own troubles. And even though his films were in black and white, he put a lot of color into everyone's life. Charlie was twelve when his father died on May 9th, 1901. He died in St. Thomas Hospital in London of alcoholism. He was thirty-seven (Robinson, David, pg. 648). After the death of her husband, Charlie's mother, became a chronically psychotic woman who was in and out of mental institutions(Weissman, Stephen, pg. 6). Charlie and Sidney, were placed in a charity home after their mother's mental health plummeted. Chaplin attended 2 years of school at Hern Boy's College. This was the only formal education that he ever recieved. Charlie was at school when his mother suffered a mental breakdown and was taken away to an institution. Completely alone, Charlie lived on the streets. When she was well enough, his mother took the children back and supported them by sewing(Untermeyer, Louis, pg.670). Between his twelfth and his fourteenth birthdays, Charlie's places of employment included a barbershop ( where he absorbed the techniques that the Jewish barber would display in "The Great Dictator"); a stationery store, a doctor's office, a glass factory, Chandler's shop, and a printing plant (Lynn, Kenneth S., pg.65).

Deseret News movie critic Robert Downey Jr. gives a superb performance that has "Oscar" written all over it as Charlie Chaplin in the new biographical film "Chaplin," by director Richard Attenborough ("Gandhi," "Cry Freedom").
Unfortunately, the film itself is less successful, a superficial skimming of the life and times of the great comedian and innovative film-maker. In fact, so much time is spent on Chaplin's self-destructive penchant for young girls that it might as well have been titled "Chaplin and His Women."
Still, Downey's surprisingly dead-on impersonation of Chaplin is an absolute knockout and well worth the price of admission. (Be advised, however, that unlike Chaplin's own pictures, this is far from a family film and contains quite a bit of female nudity.)
The film is told in flashback to the fictional editor (Anthony Hopkins) who is working with the aged Chaplin on his autobiography in the early '60s.

Two short essays by Adorno on the performer charlie chaplin. Introduction and footnotes by translator John MacKay.

Chaplin Times Two Theodor W. Adorno
Translator's Introduction In his writings on contemporary culture, Theodor W. Adorno was inclined to treat laughter with suspicion, in particular the kind of laughter generated by popular film comedies and other products of the "culture industry." What received its comic comeuppance in such films, he claimed, was anything opposed to or unassimilable by the status quo; such mirth produced a false sense of liberation masking blind conformity to a cruel social order. In the Dialectic of Enlightenment he glumly observed: In the false society laughter is a disease which has attacked happiness and is drawing it into its worthless totality. To laugh at something is always to deride it, and the life which, according to Bergson, in laughter breaks through the barrier, is actually an invading barbaric life, self-assertion prepared to parade its liberation from any scruple when the social occasion arises. Such a laughing audience is a parody of humanity. Its members are monads, all dedicated to the pleasure of being ready for anything at the expense of everyone else. Their harmony is a caricature of solidarity. What is fiendish about this false laughter is that it is a compelling parody of the best, which is conciliatory. Delight is austere: res severa verum gaudium.
