The former US President, Jimmy Carter, has called off plans to take part in monitoring the general election in Bangladesh, because of the attacks on New York and Washington. He had hoped to lead a team of 30 observers from the Carter Centre in Atlanta and the National Democratic Institute in Washington for the polls on October the first. Nearly 200 foreign observers are still expected to monitor the elections, according to the United Nations. About 100 people have been killed and thousands injured in Bangladesh since July when a caretaker government took power in the pre-election period. Carter, Jimmy Carter, Jimmy (James Earl Carter, Jr.), Carter served in the navy, where he worked with Admiral Hyman G. Rickover in developing the nuclear submarine program. Resigning his commission (1953) after his father's death, he ran his family's peanut farm, which he built into a prosperous business. In 1962 he was elected as a Democrat to the first of two terms in the Georgia Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1966, then succeeded in 1970, replacing Lester Maddox . As governor, Carter proclaimed that the time had come to end racial discrimination and formed alliances with such civil-rights leaders as Andrew Young Although little known outside Georgia, Carter announced that he would run for president at the end of his gubernatorial term, and through sustained and diligent campaigning won the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. With Minnesota Senator Walter F. Mondale as his running mate, Carter defeated incumbent President Gerald R.

Jimmy Carter talks racial reconciliation in Georgia
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue and former President Jimmy Carter participate in a forum on racial healing. Story Tools ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) Recalling their childhoods in a segregated Georgia, former President Jimmy Carter and Gov. Sonny Perdue agreed their state has made strides in race relations but still has vestiges of discrimination that must end. Carter, Georgia's governor from 1971 to 1975, and Perdue appeared together Wednesday at a special "racial reconciliation" forum attended by about 400 people. "We're not where we've been," Perdue observed, "but we have a long way to go." Carter called attention to disproportionate criminal sentences handed out to blacks and challenged Georgia to repeal its "two strikes" law, which requires life in prison for those convicted of a second felony. Carter termed it "the most severe in the nation." The former president said Perdue and top prison officials should meet regularly with black leaders to gain a better understanding of how penal issues affect the black community, and urged the governor to adequately fund a new law designed to provide better lawyers for poor people accused of crimes. "We can do more and need to do more," Perdue agreed.

His failure to be re-elected owed much to the seizure of US embassy staff in Tehran, Iran, as hostages by a Shiite Muslim group, as well as to an economic downturn.

Jimmy Carter: N. Korea crisis top threat to world peace
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said the Bush administration has aggravated tensions between the United States and North Korea. Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT What are the options? Where they stand N. Korea military might Nuclear development ... Nuclear crisis (CNN) Former President Jimmy Carter said Friday that flexibility between the United States and North Korea is the key to resolving the crisis over North Korea's nuclear program, a standoff that he called "the greatest threat in the world to regional and global peace." The 2002 Nobel Peace Prize laureate said North Korea needs to agree to complete inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency and abandon any plans to become a nuclear power and the United States needs to make a "firm commitment" that it will not attack. Carter, on a trip to Japan and China to promote the peace and health programs of his Atlanta-based Carter Center, said the matter warrants "the top priority in the international community at this time." Carter accused the Bush administration of aggravating tensions between the United States and North Korea, which he called a "paranoid nation."

Manage alerts What is this? ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) In the first novel ever written by a U.S. president, Jimmy Carter tells the story of the Revolutionary War in the South through the eyes of the farmers, British spies and American Indians. "The Hornet's Nest," released last Tuesday, weaves the lives of early Americans and the British into a bloody wartime narrative. It is his 18th book. "It's almost impossible to find this information in one place," Carter said Monday from his home in Plains, Georgia. "Almost all the impressions of the Revolutionary War are confined to Bunker Hill and Paul Revere's ride." Carter's story follows the paths of Georgia militia leader Elijah Clarke, British commander Thomas Brown and independent frontiersman Ethan Pratt. He paints a South filled with deadly battlegrounds, changing allegiances, Indian massacres, political dissent and undecided colonists.
