JIMMY CARTER
Excerpted from an essay by Hendrick Hertzberg Jimmy Carter is a saint. Now, by saying that, I don't mean to assert that Jimmy Carter is perfect, or that he is a total stranger to base motives, or that he is one of the elite of God's electthough for all I know that third item, at least, may well be true. Nor am I referring strictly to Mr. Carter's post-presidential career. It is now the conventional wisdom to say that Mr. Carter is a far better ex-President than he was a President. And in this instance the conventional wisdom has got it right. No historian would place Carter among the three or four greatest presidents of our history, and not even his most fervent admirers would place him in the top ten. But as an ex-President, he has only a tiny handful of rivals..... Carter put his post-presidential ambitions this way in the opening sentence of his farewell address from the Oval Office . He said (and I should note that while I may have typed this line, Mr. Carter, by virtue of his character, was its true author), "In a few days I will lay down my official duties in this office, to take up once more the only title in our democracy superior to that of President, the title of citizen." In the fourteen years he has held that title, he has brought honor to it. He hasn't just talked about housing the homeless, he has built houses for them with his own hands and has inspired and organized others to do likewise. He hasn't just talked about comforting the afflicted, he has mounted a little known program through the

As President of the United States, Jimmy Carter was deeply committed to social justice and basic human rights. He and his wife Rosalynn left the White House in search of meaningful ways to contribute in these areas. In addition to promoting peace and human rights through the nonprofit Carter Center in Atlanta, they lead the Jimmy Carter Work Project (JCWP) for Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) one week each year. Jimmy Carter Work Project Jimmy Carter's involvement with Habitat for Humanity International began in 1984 when the former president led a work group to New York City to help renovate a six-story building with 19 families in need of decent, affordable shelter. That experience planted the seed, and the Jimmy Carter Work Project has been an internationally recognized event of HFHI ever since.
Each year, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter give a week of their time along with their building skills to build homes and raise awareness of the critical need for affordable housing. The JCWP is held at a different location each year, and attracts volunteers from around the world. The Carters and more than 4,000 volunteers built 92 houses in Anniston, Ala., and LaGrange and Valdosta, Ga., during JCWP 2003 . The 2002 JCWP took place in Africa. One thousand houses were built in 18 countries, with the final 100 houses constructed in a five-day build in Durban, South Africa. In

Few U.S. Presidents have had such close ties with where they were born and raised. The rural southern culture of Plains, Georgia, that revolves around farming, church and school, had a large influence in molding the character and in shaping the political policies of the 39th President of the United States. The site includes President Carter’s residence, boyhood farm, school, and the railroad depot, which served as his campaign headquarters during the 1976 election. The Plains High School serves as the park’s museum and visitor center. The Jimmy Carter National Preservation District includes part of the town of Plains and its environs. The area surrounding the residence is under the protection of the Secret Service and the home is not open to the public. The Carters returned to Plains in January 1981. The former President and First Lady pursue many of the goals of the administration through The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, which has programs to alleviate human suffering and to promote human rights and world peace. When they are in Plains, Carter teaches Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church to which the public is invited. The Carters’ ties to Plains have endured the stresses of public life, remaining as strong as they were decades ago. Home Accessibility Activities Education Programs ... In 1975 when Jimmy Carter began his race for the Presidency, national attention was focused on this small southern town. Plains, population 653, was a beehive of activities with press and tourists in the thousands crowding the streets Dateline: November 5, 1976, Daybreak Plains, Georgia "Excitement at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Election Headquarters in the old Seaboard Railroad Depot is at a high fever. This tiny town is packed with thousands of people who have been up all night celebrating Mr. Carter's win. Fires burn in metal drums along the street, three bands have played during the night and a huge television screen mounted on a building across from the depot has continuously flashed the election returns. It is impossible to drive in Plains; only residents that know back roads can get in or out of town Pandemonium breaks out anew as a motorcade from Atlanta arrives carrying Jimmy Carter, the first person to be elected President from the Deep South since the Civil War. As the sun rises over the horizon, President-elect Jimmy Carter addresses this tremendous crowd of supporters from the Railroad Depot as their upturned faces shine with enthusiasm, warmth, and pride." Today, Plains is, once again, a quiet, peaceful small town (population

CARTER, JIMMY
, thirty-ninth president of the United States. When Carter took the oath of office in 1977, he inherited a nation divided by the social turmoil of the 1960s and disillusioned by the cynical political practices of the Nixon White House. Within minutes after his inauguration, Carter left his heavily armored limousine and, holding hands with his wife, Rosalyn, walked the parade route to the cheers of spectators. Carter's stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue seemed to symbolize the end of one era and the beginning of another. In retrospect, however, the Democratic victory in 1976 was a historical anomaly in an era of Republican domination of the presidency. Carter, the son of a Georgia landowner and businessman, was part of the first generation of moderate southern politicians who emerged in the aftermath of the civil rights movement. His term as Georgia governor (1971-1975) was a modest success, marked by an emphasis upon governmental reorganization and aggressive actions to end racial discrimination. Still, it hardly seemed a springboard to the White House, and his announcement in December 1975 that he would seek the presidency evoked incredulity or amusement from most knowledgeable political observers. But they underestimated Carter. American voters were disgusted by the Watergate revelations of corruption, and they responded warmly to the soft-spoken southerner with his perpetual smile and his often repeated promise: "I'll never lie to you." His moderate economic views, his commitment to civil rights, and his background as a southerner helped him assemble a coalition of traditional Democrats, blacks, and southern whites who had become increasingly alienated from the Democratic party. Carter narrowly defeated incumbent Gerald Ford with 50.1 percent of the vote.

Carter, Jimmy
(James Earl; ), thirty-ninth president of the United States . Born in Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and worked on the naval nuclear reactor project until 1953. In 1970 he was elected governor of Georgia and in 1974 launched his campaign for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination. Carter slowly built a national identity through grass-roots campaigning, establishing himself as a spokesman for the common people. The Democratic party nominated him on the first ballot in 1976; he narrowly defeated the incumbent Republican president Gerald Ford . Notable achievements during his one term as president include the stressing of human rights, the establishment of a national energy policy, a new Panama Canal treaty, and the Camp David Accords establishing peace between Egypt and Israel. He ordered an attempt to rescue U.S. hostages in Iran in 1980, which was unsuccessful; the ongoing hostage crisis was a contributing factor in his defeat for reelection in 1980. The Republican nominee, Ronald Reagan , won the presidential election in a landslide and escalated the military buildup begun by Carter.

Biography of Jimmy Carter
(James Earl Carter, Jr.) Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.), thirty-ninth president of the United States, was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby community of Archery. His father, James Earl Carter, Sr., was a farmer and businessman; his mother, Lillian Gordy, a registered nurse. He was educated in the Plains public schools, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, N.Y., where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics, and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf. On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith. When his father died in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and took his family back to Plains. He took over the Carter farms, and he and Rosalynn operated Carter's Warehouse, a general-purpose seed and farm supply company. He quickly became a leader of the community, serving on county boards supervising education, the hospital authority, and the library. In 1962 he won election to the Georgia Senate. He lost his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966, but won the next election, becoming Georgia's 76th governor on January 12, 1971. He was the Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional elections.

Jimmy Carter: U.S. ranks lowest in giving to others
Carter: "...the United States at this point is at the very bottom of all the rich countries in being generous to others." Editor's Note: CNN Access is a regular feature on CNN.com providing interviews with newsmakers from around the world. At the U.N. Development Conference in Mexico this week, former president Jimmy Carter said the U.S. should do more to help the millions of people living in poverty around the globe. President Bush today addressed the same conference, and said the recently announced $10 billion increase in U.S. aid will be used to encourage economic freedom, political liberty and human rights. CNN's Judy Woodruff spoke to Carter after Bush's announcement and asked him about the increase and if he thinks the Bush administration is doing enough on this issue. CARTER: This administration is doing more than any administration has done in the last 20 years. And I'm deeply grateful that President Bush has taken this initiative and this bold step because I know that some key people in his administration didn't even want to increase development assistance at all.
