Obituary: Helen Carter, 70, Performer in Family's Country Band By BEN RATLIFF H elen Carter, a singer and musician who was part of the Carter family dynasty of country-music
entertainers, died on Tuesday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. She
was 70 and lived in Dickson, Tenn. She had been hospitalized for gastrointestinal problems that began over a year ago, said Kelly
Hancock of House of Cash, the business office of Johnny Cash, Carter's brother-in-law, and of her
sister June Carter Cash. The original Carter Family band, which helped kick-start the country-music record industry in 1927,
was begun by A.P. Carter, a railroad worker and farmer from Maces Springs, Va.; his wife, Sara,
and Sara's cousin, Maybelle. The band grew with the occasional addition of Maybelle's children, including Helen. The family band lasted from 1927 to 1943, and it was of inestimable importance to American music.

The Legend Unbroken Carter Family bio assures that influential trio is gone but not forgotten By Sara Bir The Carter Family influenced country music to the extent that Maybelle Carter is acknowledged as "the Queen Mother of Country Music," and Bob Dylan, upon meeting Johnny Cash for the first time, immediately asked him, "Did you ever meet A. P. Carter?" Their music may have been honest and simple, but, as Mark Zwonitzer and Charles Hirshberg tell us in Sara Dougherty was just 16 when she married Alvin P. Carter, an agitated, enterprising man from southern Virginia. A. P. had gained a wife, but also a project; he saw great potential in Sara's rich, powerful voice. Eck Carter, A. P.'s brother, later married Sara's cousin Maybelle, whose virtuosity at playing the guitar was such that she developed her own style, the "Carter scratch," which allowed her to play lead notes and accompaniment at the same time. Always a man with a plan, A. P. formed the three into a group: Maybelle on guitar, Sara playing autoharp and singing lead, and A. P. pitching in bass vocals now and then. More than anything else, though, A. P. was the Carter Family's visionary, booking shows and going on long trips through the Southeast to dig up gospel standards and long-forgotten Victorian parlor songs to add to the Carter's repertoire.

Hillbillies on the Radio "Old-time" or "hillbilly" music would not have been popularized without the attention of record companies and the radio. At the time, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) which controlled the music publishing houses and the live music industry, respectively, barred rural, blues, and jazz musicians from membership, effectively keeping them from performing or publishing their works professionally. Consequently most old-time performers were semi-professionals who combined performing at barn-dances, medicine shows, music contests, political rallies, etc. with whatever sort of work they could find. The Carter Family out of Columbia Records' "Familiar Tunes- Old and New" catalogue about half the old-time records released were traditional songs, but the number of original compositions doubled from 12% to 24%. Carson, especially, was used to learning a few songs and could not adjust to new material quickly. Carson and the others were being replaced by the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and Vernon Dalhart, a classically trained singer who recorded crooner pop hits, "Negro dialect" songs, and old-time songs. These new performers were able to write new material that sounded traditional and were able to quickly pick up new songs and initialize them. Uncle Jimmy Thompson on WSM

In those simple ballads and chanteys Vaughan Williams found the heart and soul of his country, and consequently laid hold of the national spirit that distinguished his work. Philosophically, he believed the true artist must get in touch with his own culture and ethnicity in order to produce works of genuine value. It is doubtful that Vaughan Williams ever heard of A.P. Carter or the Carter Family, but in them the great composer shared a vital kindred spirit. The Carter Family is hailed as "the first family of country music," but even this title falls short of describing their influence. The Carter Family assimilated traditional idioms and established models of style and performance that continue an incalculable inspiration for folk, bluegrass, and southern gospel music some seven decades later. Alvin Pleasant ("A.P.") Carter was an eccentric odd-jobber from the rugged hill country near Clinch Mountain in southwestern Virginia. He was raised in a strict Christian home, and his early fiddle playing was banned because the violin was viewed as the Devil's instrument. He turned to gospel quartet singing, the effect of which would unexpectedly result in a colossal transformation of popular country music. When A.P. met Sara Dougherty (who, according to legend, was sitting on her front porch playing the autoharp and singing "Engine 143") and the two began harmonizing vocally, though not so successfully in matrimony a trailhead was marked for a new style of country music. From henceforth tightly harmonizing vocals would be preeminent. The heyday of the string band was over.
