Birthplace of Country Music
A Local Legacy

Where was country music born? If you said Nashville, you'd be wrong. The right answer is Bristol, Tennessee. Bristol is on the Tennessee and Virginia border, where Appalachian mountain folk music has been popular for generations. Many of the fiddle tunes and song styles came over from the British Isles in the 1700s. By the early 1900s, the recording industry had begun, but most musicians had to travel to New York City to record their music. In 1927, Ralph Peer of Victor Records decided to try something different. He went to Bristol, Tennessee, to record local musicians. He thought that old-time and "hillbilly" musicians could be found there. Two local acts signed recording contracts the Carter Family from Virginia and former railroad worker Jimmie Rodgers of North Carolina. While the Carter Family played old-time mountain music, Jimmie Rodgers sang ballads and used a singing style called yodeling. They both became successful nationwide. The Carter Family formed the core of several generations of popular country musicians, and Rodgers's 1928 recording of "Blue Yodel" became one of the first country records to sell a million copies! These early Bristol recordings laid the groundwork for much of the country music that followed. Because Bristol is not usually thought of as the place where country music began, it was especially important that the U.S. Congress recognized Bristol's contribution to music history. In 1998, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Bristol as the "Birthplace of County Music."

Thursday May 17th, 2001 Mother Maybelle's L-5 moves into a 'mansion' Led by Othar Turner's Fife and Drum Band this morning, a limousine procession of Country Music Hall of Fame members carried the last artifact to go into the new Country Music Hall of Fame museum Mother Maybelle Carter 's Gibson L-5 guitar . They traveled only ten blocks from the original Music Row location to the grand new facility at 5th Avenue South and Demonbreun Street in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. In ceremonies at the new museum, country star and master instrumentalist Marty Stuart held Mother Maybelle's Gibson aloft and said, "This guitar is the heart of country music. Inside this guitar lives country music." Stuart, playing Mother Maybelle's Gibson, then ended the inaugural ceremonies with a song first recorded and popularized by the Carter Family, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." The history of that guitar and country music began on another short trip July 31, 1927. A.P. "Doc" Carter drove his model A Ford loaded with his wife Sara, his sister-in-law Maybelle (who was seven months pregnant at the time), and Sara's two children and various musical instruments 30 miles from mountainous Maces Spring, Virginia, to Bristol, Tennessee. They were to record for Victor talent scout Ralph Peer, who was conducting a 10-day session in a leased store front on State Street. The Carter session had been pre-arranged between A.P. and Peer through the assistance of the local Victrola merchant. The Carter Family cut six sides on August 1-2, including "The Storms are on the Ocean" and "Single Girl, Married Girl", an event often marked as the beginning of country music as a popular, commercial musical style.

Carlene Carter goes her own way
By Jeffrey B. Remz November 1995 C arlene Carter just can't be kept down. Carter certainly does not need to cash in on her famous lineage of the Carters and the Cashes to make a name of herself. After personal and musical ups and downs and changes throughout her career, Carter is back once again, having just released "Little Acts of Treason." And this disc also marks yet another different musical period for Carter. "In a lot of ways it was the most I put myself into a record in the sense that I co-produced it and wrote half of it on my own," Carter said in a recent interview. "I just wanted to do it. It was almost as simple as that. I wanted to mature a little bit and move on. I still wanted to have my light-hearted and fun-loving Carlene stuff, but I also wanted to relate to the world that I am actually a woman and not a girl because I'm going to be 40. Sometimes I catch myself and I feel I'm not really being a grown up and I am very much a mom." Carter, thrice-married with two grown children, marks number 40 Sept. 26.

When people say "traditional country" music they're usually referring to styles that were most popular in the '50's and '60's, even though no one is more traditional than the (Original) Carter Family who, along with Jimmie Rodgers, were country's first superstars. (Various offshoots continued as The Carter Family for years - hence the importance of distinguishing the original trio of A,P., Sara, and Maybelle.) Even today, as surely as two males harmonizing are compared to The Louvin Brothers, male/female harmonies are compared to The Carter Family - often by people quite unfamiliar with the genuine article.
One problem in getting familiar with The Carter Family is the sheer volume of their oeuvre. This 20-track "American Milestones" issue of recordings made in 1935 (and a few from 1940) may be a good place to start. It includes many of their most famous tunes - "Wildwood Flower," "Keep On The Sunny Side," "Worried Man Blues" and the title track. As old as these recordings are they're actually pretty well along in the group's life. The original versions were made for RCA in the late '20's and early '30's. By the mid-'30's, Sara sang in a lower voice and recording quality had improved, so these later recordings are preferable for many people.

http://www.usatourist.com/english/inside/countrymusic.html
When the original colonists from Britain settled in this new land called America, they brought along their music. This included traditional English, Scotch and Irish dance melodies, folk songs and ballads. As the colonies grew, the population diversified, and many other types of music were imported and absorbed into the culture of this new country called the United States of America.
Rural Folk Music became "Country Music"
In the Isolated rural communities of the Southeastern and Midwestern states, many residents preserved their own local derivations of the Scotch-Irish based music. They called it "folk music", "hillbilly music" or simply "country music". This rustic music was a favorite form of entertainment at rural festivals and local barn dances. Each region independently developed its own unique style. It has always remained exclusively white folks music. Very few Afro-Americans perform or listen to country music. The early twentieth century brought an innovation called radio that radically changed the nature of country music in the USA. Southern radio stations soon learned that their rural audiences preferred listening to local performers playing their own local music. They began broadcasting country music programs. For the first time, rural residents from across the land heard the different styles of folk music popular in various regions of the country.
Country Music and radio helped create "The Grand Ole Opry"
The WSM barn dance radio show in Nashville Tennessee became the most popular country music broadcast of all. Since the barn dance followed a classical music program named "The Grand Old Opera", country performers began calling their show "the Grand Ole Opry". This show was rebroadcast by radio stations across the country and heard by millions of listeners. It soon became the most popular country music program in the USA. It still holds that title.
