Not only were they key players at the famed Bristol sessions—the so-called “big bang” that did much to put country music on the map—but they also remained at the music’s forefront during its first two decades as a commercial art form. The Carters essentially invented the kind of harmony singing used for years in the music; Maybelle crafted the so-called “Carter lick” on the guitar and watched it become the best-known picking style in the genre; the group popularized dozens of songs that became country standards; they served as a platform for the two most creative and talented women in the music, Sara and her cousin Maybelle; they produced an amazing number of hit records during their recording days, from l927 to l941; and they explored a wide variety of song genres, from blues to gospel, from old ballads to nineteenth-century parlor songs; and in A. P. they had one of the greatest creative song doctors in country music history. In spite of these achievements, however, the Carters never had the kind of spectacular financial success like that of Jimmie Rodgers or Gene Autry. They never really “crossed over” to the huge popular audiences of network radio, Hollywood films, and big-time vaudeville. Time and again they kept returning to their beloved Clinch Valley, disgusted or puzzled by the show business world.

Home Page New Releases Rural America Old West ... return to the Articles index The Carter Family by John Lilly Anita Carter was only four years old when she first saw Dr. John Romulus Brinkley in 1938 at a mansion in Del Rio, Texas, but it was a sight she never forgot: a goat-bearded, diamond-studded, round spectacled man, floating down the stairs with a pet monkey on his shoulder. Dr. Brinkley had built the most powerful radio station in the world, 500,000 watt XERA, and blanketed North America with sales pitches for snake oils and his quack remedies. A Chicago company, Consolidated Royal Chemical, also used XERA airwaves to sell patent medicines, and featured the best in country music entertainment Anita's mother, Maybelle, her uncle, A. P., and her aunt, Sara: the Carter Family. One day, Maybelle told little Anita to sing her favorite song into the microphone, the one about the "purty liddle kitty kat" that wore "a great big cowboy hat." The show's producers were ecstatic! That cute little girl had the Carter gift, they said. Were there any more at home like her? Why, yes, Maybelle said. There were her two daughters, Helen and June, and there was A. P. and Sara's daughter, Janette. For the next three years, two generations of Carters sang to an audience spanning the continent, and a generation of budding country stars got a musical education that shaped them forever.

Janette Carter Recuperating at Home Janette Carter has begun making public appearances once again, while continuing her recovery from double knee-replacement surgery. Although still enduring considerable pain, discomfort, and weakness, the indominatable matriarch of the Carter Family participated in a press conference and grant announcement at the Carter Family Museum Friday, April 23. She performed a short set Friday, April 30, at an event sponsored by the Birthplace of Country Music (BCMA) at the Bristol Holiday Inn (Exit 7), 7:30 p.m. Working with her rehabilitation technicians and nurses, she is doing some walking at home but temporarily at least attends public functions using a wheelchair. She definitely should be in fine shape for the long-awaited dedication ceremonies for the newly restored A.P. Carter Birthplace cabin May 29. She and her brother Joe will also be performing both days of the Festival, Autust 6 and 7. Welcome!

The Surrounding Area Southwest Virginia (and northeast Tennessee) is rural, mountainous, and ruggedly beautiful. It's also the legendary home of the Carter Family. Fabled Clinch Mountain, celebrated in countless country, folk, and bluegrass songs, rises directly behind The Carter Family Fold and all the homes and places that are part of the history of this remarkable musical dynasty. For those fans familiar with the history of the Carter Family, the community known as Maces Springs is the hometown and legendary base of operations for A.P., Sara, and Maybelle, the original trio. Maces Springs no longer has a post office, and the town of Hiltons now applies to the area previously known as Maces Springs or Poor Valley. The original family homes and historic sites related to the Carter Family and previously having addresses in Maces Springs now have addresses in Hiltons. Where to Stay Hiltons is approximately 20 miles from the largest nearby cities of Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee, and Kingsport, Tennessee. These towns have most of the major hotel chains and are recommended to those planning overnight stays. Other nearby towns are Abingdon and Duffield (Virginia) and Johnson City (Tennessee). If you prefer camping, bring your RV or tent. Although the Carter Family Memorial Music Center has no hookup facilities, there is space for rustic camping on the Center grounds. There are many campgrounds throughout the area as well.

Seventeen acetates have fallen into Strachwitz's hands, and so were born three recently released Carter Family CDs titled On Border Radio . The sounds of On Border Radio are not what made the Carters million sellers. Rather, the family's voluminous popular recordings for Victor now being methodically reissued by Boston-based Rounder Records are the very fabric of country music history. But the radio transcriptions are an illuminating peek behind the scenes. The close harmonies of A.P. Carter, his wife, Sara, and her cousin Maybelle were discovered by a traveling talent scout in 1927, at the same audition where "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers got his start. Cousin Maybelle has had the strongest effect on the evolution of country music, as her modified flat-picking including a bass-string rumble known to some as the "Carter lick" has influenced country pickers and piano players alike. Their music had a profound impact on later bluegrass, country, "pop", and rock musicians, as well as the U.S. folk revival of the 1960s. The original group was a trio comprised of Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter (A.P.), his wife, Sara Dougherty Carter autoharp ), and Maybelle Carter guitar ). Maybelle was married to A.P.'s brother Ezra (Eck) Carter.
