61. Harry Caray Quotes (Baseball World)
Hello again, everybody. It s a beeyooo-tiful day for baseball. . I ll tell you what s helped me my entire life. I look at baseball as a game.

Harry Caray Quotes "Hello again, everybody. It's a bee-yooo-tiful day for baseball." "I'll tell you what's helped me my entire life. I look at baseball as a game. It's something where people can go out, enjoy and have fun. Nothing more." "Booze, broads and bullshit. If you got all that, what else do you need?" "I've only been doing this 54 years. With a little experience, I might get better." - on his mispronouncations "I think it's the greatest shot in the arm baseball could get. Once upon a time, all kids wanted to be baseball players, but nowadays a young kid dreams about playing basketball or football and making millions. I think it's great to see a man who has reached the pinnacle of his career, and now he wants to go back and do what he wanted to do as a kid: play baseball." - on Michael Jordan "My whole philosophy is to broadcast the way a fan would broadcast." "Oh, what difference does it make? I figure I had no business being here this long anyway, so what do you care how old I am? I've been on borrowed time for years. You know my old saying: live it up, the meter's running. I've always said that if you don't have fun while you're here, then it's your fault. You only get to do this once." - on his true age, February 14, 1998

Harry Caray Tribute Page
Here is a cool quote I found on a page for Harry. If this is you let me know so I can recognize you. " In the movie "Bull Durham," Annie Savoy equated baseball with religion. If that's true, then Wrigley Field is surely one of baseball' churches and Harry Caray was one of the game's priests. " This reminds me of a quote I once saw on an ad for a baseball game. It showed the scoreboard operator at Wrigley and said "If heaven is anything like Wrigley Field on a Sunday afternoon, then death might not be that bad". That really reminded me of Harry when I saw it again this week. God Bless you Harry. I haven't updated this in a really long time, but I felt that the sentiments here were enough to convey my point. I finally did something today when I added a picture of Harry and I. I felt this was a nice touch. This candle will burn for as long as I have a webpage for Harry. All I can say is that I hope there is a seventh inning stretch in heaven. Godspeed My friend, Godspeed. Here are my 2 favorite Cubs in the whole world
Approved by Harry himself This is in memory of Harry, feel free to sing along.

Harry Caray March 1 February 18 ), born Harry Christopher Carabina in St. Louis, Missouri , was a beloved TV and radio broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs of the National League . Prior to becoming the Cubs' main play-by-play broadcaster, he worked TV and radio for the St. Louis Cardinals Oakland Athletics , and Chicago White Sox . He died of a heart attack in 1998 after a series of strokes. Caray made his debut in with the Cardinals, but was fired in amid rumors of personal problems with the Busch family, who owned both the Cardinals and the Anheuser-Busch breweries. After a season with Oakland, Caray broadcast for the White Sox from to , and then for the Cubs from to He was extremely popular among the citizens of Chicago and known as much for his public carousing and jovial spirit as his sportscasting. In the years before his death, his skills as a broadcaster gradually declined, due to illness and senility , leading some people to say that he should retire or be fired. His tendency to mispronounce players' names (often humorously), especially late in his career, was widely parodied.

Hall of Fame Inductee Harry Caray
"He was the very first to tell it like it was." -Jack Buck Few broadcasters have enjoyed the popularity and success that the late Harry Caray experienced over the course of a remarkable 55 years in sports broadcasting. Born in St. Louis, Caray began his broadcasting career at the age of 19, working at radio stations in Joliet, Illinois and Kalamazoo, Michigan. He later returned to St. Louis to begin his major league broadcasting career with the St. Louis Cardinals. Caray soon became the colorful, often controversial spokesman for the Cardinal fan, broadcasting to several generations of St. Louis baseball enthusiasts. It was in St. Louis where Caray first gained national recognition, making fans across the nation with his ability to capture the heart of baseballand his inability to sing. Caray's unique rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" has become a favorite with baseball fans across the United States, though his voice has been compared to a "buzz saw" and is said to "sound like he got hit in the throat with a shovel and never recovered". Caray spent the 1970 season broadcasting Oakland Athletic games on both radio and television. In 1971, he moved to Chicago where he became the radio television voice of the Chicago White Sox. Eleven years later, in 1982, the Chicago Cubs welcomed Caray to Wrigley Field where he continues to broadcast Cubs games on WGN-TV and WGN Radio.

Harry also saw beauty in giving plugs to his favorite people, and at the top of his list was his attorney, Jack Barry. He always called him, "Prominent Chicago Attorney, Jack Barry." I don't know if he was prominent before Harry began talking about him, but he sure was by the time Harry finished talking about him. Well, one day it got a little more complicated than he expected. "Prominent Chicago attorney Jack Barry is at the game with his son today," Harry began. "His son played for Frank Leahy, Jack Barry did, and his son, Jack Barry the third, he has his son here, and that's probably Jack Barry the fourth, and Frank Barry, no Leahy. Barry Leahy and Jack Barry went to Notre Dame and played college football with Barry Leahy, whose son Jack Barry is here with his son today and ..." And on and on Harry went about the Jack Barrys, leaving us all in a cloud of Barrys, with no idea which one he was talking about. He went on for about an inning-and-a-half and the whole time Arne was in my earpiece telling me to, "Get him off the Barrys, will you?" I broke in with a little levity ... or so I thought. "Harry," I asked. "Would that make Jack Barry the 'elder-Berry'?"

It's hard to find a sports figure more revered in Chicago than Harry Caray, a regular guy who somehow got hold of a mike
By Ron Fimrite Excerpted from Sports Illustrated, September 18, 1978 Editor's note: Harry Caray had been an instant hit with Chicago White Sox fans upon joining the franchise's broadcasting team in 1971. The warm welcome he received at 35th and Shields may have had something to do with the fact that for a quarter of a century Caray had been the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals the nemesis of the White Sox's crosstown rivals, the Cubs. One of Caray's rituals at Comiskey Park grew into a Chicago baseball tradition. His now-famous practice of leading the crowd in Take Me Out to the Ball Game began at Comiskey in 1976 when Sox owner Bill Veeck secretly placed a public-address microphone in the broadcast booth after noticing that fans sitting below the booth would sing along as Harry serenaded partner Jimmy Piersall during the seventh-inning stretch. Thanks to such populist touches, Caray had reached the status of a Chicago icon by the time SI's Ron Fimrite joined him for this portrait in 1978.

Harry Caray's Chicago
August 2, 2003 Listen to this feature How to listen) Harry Caray's Chicago (there are outposts in Rosemont and Midway Airport) was founded by the late hall-of-fame announcer and "voice of the Chicago Cubs." It's not the typical sports bar and restaurant, but an Italian steakhouse located in an old building by the river that used to house a varnish distribution plant, along with a fourth-floor hideout for the 1930's mobster, Frank Nitti. The food is regional and the atmosphere funky. A large plastic replica of a cow with holes in it pays tribute to Harry, who coined the expression "Holy Cow!" The famous homemade potato chips served at the bar (it's 60' 6", the exact distance from the pitcher's mound to home plate) are as good as they get, and the Chicken Vesuvio and Shrimp De Jonghe are not to be missed. Harry Caray's POS System Keeps It "Current" and Saves More Than "Peanuts and Crackerjacks"
by Ed Rubinstein Legendary Chicago Cubs Broadcaster Harry Caray CHICAGO—The passing of Harry Caray earlier this year may have dampened the spirits of many baseball fans here. After all, Cub fans for decades were very accustomed to his game calls and rousing rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." But had Caray witnessed the new point-of-sale platform at the eatery named after him, the legendary broadcaster might have burst into song as the system took advantage of a new electrical product that will save the restaurant thousands of dollars. Harry Caray's, which last year generated more than $8 million in food and beverage sales, decided last year that it was going to replace its point-of-sale terminals and adopt the Microsoft Windows NT operating system as its in-store processor. After evaluating several platforms, Harry Caray's chose the Squirrel point-of-sale platform from Sulcus Hospitality Corp. However, before the installation last winter, there were some initial concerns about Harry Caray's location. The 100-year-old, Dutch Renaissance building, one of the few in the country still standing, is powered by traditional grounded electrical outlets and circuit breakers. In virtually all point-of-sale installations and as part of their product warranties, hardware manufacturers require that systems be connected through either dedicated or isolated circuits. Even electrical thunderstorms can cause electrical hiccups.
