Steve Stone Remembers a Legend I wasn't a Cub fan growing up, but I watched the WGN games almost everyday in the summer and I came to enjoy the broadcast team of Harry and Steve. Steve Stone is one of the most underrated broadcasters on television and the anecdotes he provides for the book are truly gems. Steve loved Harry quite a bit, and blasts former Cub play by play man Milo Hamilton who was particularly ugly to Harry before and after his death. But the subtext of the early chapters is that Harry had some flaws, and Harry and Steve had their ups and downs during their career together. It would have been easy to gloss over that reality, but it's a credit to Stone that he paints a very human picture of a baseball legend. A "must read" for every Cub fan. A great tribute to Harry.

HARRY CARAY From 1945 to 1969, Caray was the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals on KMOX/St. Louis. There he developed not only a solid St. Louis following, but a national following as well. During those years, he called three World Series and one All-Star Game and was named Baseball Broadcaster of the Year seven consecutive times by The Sporting News. Born Harry Carabina on March 1, 1914, in St. Louis, young Harry played semi-pro baseball before entering radio. After learning his trade at stations in Joliet and Kalamazoo, Michigan, he did play-by-play for the St. Louis Hawks and the University of Missouri football team. While at WKZO/Kalamazoo, he worked with a young newscaster named Paul Harvey. After leaving St. Louis, following a dispute with team ownership, Caray headed west to the Oakland Athletics for the 1970 season. In 1971, Caray moved to the Chicago White Sox, where for ten years he served as their principal voice along with color man Jimmy Piersall. Harry Caray was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1990.

Born Harry Christopher Carabina, he grew up at 1909 LaSalle Street in St. Louis and attended Dewey School and Webster Groves High School. He played on two local semi-pro baseball teams before starting his radio career. After announcing both Cardinals and Browns away games in 1945, the effusive Caray, renowned for yelling "Holy Cow" after big plays, broadcast for the Cardinals from 1947 to 1969. One of baseball’s best-loved announcers, Caray then called Oakland A’s and Chicago White Sox games before capping his career with the Chicago Cubs. Sporting News, The
March 2, 1998 by Dave Kindred
Came the seventh inning one night. A foul ball went flying back to the Cubs' radio booth. Harry Caray put out his right hand, only to have the missile slap off his palm. From next door came play-by-play by the Braves' radio man, Skip Caray (an apple fallen near die tree), "That's an error. Hit Dad in a bad place. The hands." Harry's laughter rumbled across the air, out of the ballpark, to be heard forever. I'm a child of radio who listened to Harry Caray on KMOX in St. Louis in the 1950s. Every baseball night, I went to my room with a Coke and a Velveeta sandwich, heavy on the mustard. If it got to be the 14th inning and my parents didn't need to know I was awake, I moved the radio under the blankets with my scorebook and flashlight. Though I'd never been to a major league ballpark and I'd never seen Stan Musial, somehow it didn't matter. I'd been places and seen things with Harry because the glory of baseball's radio days was the medium's insistence that you, the listener, take part.

1989 Ford C. Frick Award Winner
Harry Caray
For well over half a century, the ebullient, colorful style of 1989 Ford C. Frick Award winner Harry Caray personified baseball in the Midwest. Before television blanketed the country and before backyards (and front yards) were overrun with satellite dishes, Caray's outspoken, opinionated, sometimes outrageous and often controversial approach was the public's pipeline from the Great Plains to the Eastern seaboard. Caray began his major league career behind the mike with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1945. After a quarter-century in St. Louis, he migrated to California where he spent the 1970 season broadcasting the games of Charlie Finley's Oakland Athletics . He then moved on to Chicago, where he announced White Sox games for 11 years, after which he went cross-town to Wrigley Field to work for the Cubs . In his first 41 seasons in the booth, Caray never missed a game, and the fan favorite went on to broadcast over 8,300 games in his 53-year career in the big leagues. Caray's reputation as a fearless and out-spoken critic frequently led to disenchantment on the part of his various employers. On the other hand, few have been a better salesman for baseball for so long.
