IN MEMORY OF THE LATE HARRY CARAY Born March 1, 1914 - Died February 18, 1998 - Age 83 Harry is survived by his wife, Dutchie, by 5 children and 5 stepchildren, 14 grandchildren, one great grandchild and by baseball fans throughout the city - his city. Harry Caray's Life Harry Caray, who took millions of fans out to the ballgame on radio and television, died Wednesday, February 18, 1998, four days after collapsing at a Valentine's Day dinner. In a career spanning almost 60 years, the often offbeat Hall of Fame broadcaster covered baseball's greats from Musial to Mays to Maddux. Holy Cow! as he would say. Caray had a heart attack Saturday while dining with his wife, Dutchie. He died of brain damage caused by the attack, said Harlan Corenman, Eisenhower Medical Center spokesman. A broadcaster since 1941, Caray became a household name through his Cubs' games for WGN-TV, carried nationally by many cable systems. He was immediately recognizable for his thick, oversized glasses and raspy, sing-along rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" over the public address system during the seventh-inning stretch. Caray was believed to be 77, although St. Louis city health records were he was born indicate he was actually 83 and would have turned 84 on March 1.

The eternal cub fan will be sorely missed Kevin Hall
Columnist I heard Friday that over 900 people in Palm Springs, Calif., attended the wake of legendary baseball play-by-play man and raconteur Harry Caray. Caray died last Thursday at the questionable age of 83 in Rancho Mirage, Calif., four days after suffering a heart attack. See, Harry wasn't big on age, and he often fibbed about his. The great attendance of fans celebrating Caray's life wasn't unexpected, as it was said those who came in contact with the legendary broadcaster were blessed from the experience. The Chicago Cubs announcer for the past 16 of his 53-year career, Caray would often be seen leaning out of his booth above Wrigley Field, leading and conducting the crowd through the song. Caray had a story for every affair. And with every soul he touched, a story was left behind for them to tell as well. The outgoing, funny, carefree character and hero that was Caray won't soon be forgotten. His life was baseball, and in a way his legend will live on -though it's not nearly the same- in the form of his son, Atlanta Braves broadcaster Skip Caray, and Fox Sports anchor and grandson Chip Caray, who was to have shared the broadcast booth with grandpa this summer.

Stripped down to his shorts, he would recline in his lounger with an unnamed beverage and jump into the nearby shower between innings to cool off. What a sight..... HOLY COW.
