Frank Capra
Rain or Shine
Capra's early sound film Rain or Shine (1930) deals with a circus. Most of the first hour of the film is a chance for the team of Broadway comics led by Joe Cook to run amok. They are the poor man's equivalent of the Marx Brothers. Joe Cook is fast talking like Groucho, and one of the other three is largely silent, like Harpo. Mainly this bunch is not that skillful, and makes one appreciate the Marx Brothers more. They do well however, in their circus finale, when they do comedy acrobatics. Capra like entrances. His characters weave their way through a country club dining room in one graceful shot, which is repeated from the same angle, framed by palm trees, when the characters leave. There are also many long shots of the circus tent itself during performances. One can see the entire geometry of the tent in full view, with audience, circus rings, entrances and paths between them all laid out in detail. The camera seems close enough to make everything seem large, vivid and easy to follow. It is very graceful filming. One can also see the tent as well, the flag poles that support it, and every circus performer in the background.
Crowd Scenes
Capra's scenes include the audience in detail. You can see each individual person in the crowd. At first this seems heart warming, with the audience laughing at the performer's antics. Later in the film, when the crowd turns ugly, they seem like an overwhelming menacing presence. There is a claustrophobic effect, and a sense that everyone is trapped together in one shot, and that no one can escape the ugly dynamics of the situation.

25. DEEP FOCUS: Frank Capra
Biographical information about the Italian moviemaker.
http://alumni.imsa.edu/~mitch/directors/capra.html
The Life of Frank Capra
Frank Capra was born in Sicily in 1897 before immigrating to the Los Angeles with his family in 1903. He earned a college degree in chemical engineering, but later went to work as a gag writer for Hal Roach and then Mack Sennett. At Sennett's studio, he helped develop the screen character of comedian Harry Langdon. He also helped Langdon when Langdon went on to feature films. Capra directed such Langdon films as Tramp, Tramp, Tramp (1926), which he also wrote, The Strong Man (1926), and Long Pants (1927). The childlike, lucky simpleton played by Langdon in those films became a great sensation, such a great sensation that Langdon got rid of Capra in an egoistic fit and attempted to make his own films. However, though a good performer, Langdon was not a good filmmaker and enjoyed a marvelous, brief career as a film star. Capra went on to Columbia Pictures in 1928 and helped the studio turn itself around from a cheap, run-down operation into a major player in Hollywood. Capra directed a series of average but successful films at Columbia, learning his craft and coming up with a few technical innovations of his own before he achieved an incredible success with perhaps the first masterpiece in screwball comedies, It Happened One Night (1934). The film became the first ever to make a clean sweep of all of the major categories at the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Actor for Clark Gable, Best Actress for Claudette Colbert, and Best Director for Capra. After

Introduction Next JMMH O n January 9, 1999, during the annual American Historical Association (AHA) meeting in Washington DC, The Popular Culture Association, , and the AHA co-sponsored a conference session on the films and legacy of Frank Capra. The session was titled "Frank Capra's Populism: Timebound or Timeless?" Capra's films have made an indelible impact on 20th-century America, serving as both commentaries on and artifacts of American culture. Few historians are more able and competent to analyze them than Robert Brent Toplin, Lawrence Levine, and Dan T. Carter. We obtained permission from all three to tape their presentations and to utilize their talks in The JMMH this was the one we wanted to showcase. Those who later heard our recordings heartily agreed with us. W e are especially proud of this piece, not only because of the high quality of the talks, but because re -presenting the Capra joint session in an enhanced multimedia format, including film excerpts, demonstrates clearly the unique opportunities hypermedia provides for the scholarly analysis and review of non-textual material. P lease note that we have transcribed the presentations as they were delivered have added, wherever possible and with the presenters' cooperation, brief reference notes placed
